Guys, talk about whatever you want and don't take the few negative/hate comments as a generalization. We tune it to listen to whatever you love and enjoy talking about, be it EVs, 911s or anything. I hope the few negative comments don't kill your motivation. Absolutely love the podcast and main channel

Talk about whatever you want, its your channel. I was anti EV, but my employer has a really good salary sacrifice scheme, so i took the plunge. Im so happy with the car, its been such a great experience, a Mini Electric SE, the range has been 100 miles or less this winter, but that is absolutely fine, the few times our journey has been longer, a quick public fill up to get us home has been an easy experience. Im happy with my petrol A3 for long journeys and happy with the Mini for local, more fun trips.

After having lived with a very early MY2020 Taycan 4S, and experienced loosing 7% SOH over 1,5 yrs and 52000km and then 3 months later being stranded atop a mountain in a blizzard on New Year’s Day 2022 due to a short circuit of the rear motor, I’m not going near owning a premium EV ever again. I’m done with that junk. Enjoying life with a Cayenne without an extension cord😁

It really does hit peak misery when stuck in an EV in a blizzard, doesn't it? I had a similar experience when I got stuck in the middle of nowhere in a blizzard at a charging station when the battery apparently had gotten so cold that it simply refused to charge at more than a snail's pace...while the car's heating system refused to kick in. It was a Friday evening and if I had only chosen an ICE car I had already arrived at home from that work trip, as I had already had to do two previous charging stops... I got home *very* late that night for no other reason than that EV.
@Jamie-zm9hs
@Jamie-zm9hs 4 ай бұрын
@@onemorelapyou’re doing exactly what Tony was talking about. These two guys are sharing their experience. Yes it was a mechanical fault, but it still happened. And let’s be clear faulty new electric cars are a lot more common than faulty new ICE cars, that’s just a fact.
@faisalleeds
@faisalleeds 4 ай бұрын
@pistonburner6448 did the car still work though? You managed to get a small amount of charge to get home? I suppose it is good that it didn't totally fail, but that situation sounds terrible!
@pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 4 ай бұрын
@@faisalleeds It did slowly start to get enough heat into it that it started charging slightly faster...though still painfully slow. And after about 15 min it had enough charge that it allowed me to turn on the cabin heating. I'm a strange guy in the sense that for some reason I love planning my charging stops and having "car adventures", but it's just a fact that when there's unplanned stuff like that, when there's one charger in a large area and it's occupied or broken, and you actually have stuff to do or you want to get into bed...it's really painful. I've since switched back to fully ICE.
@pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 4 ай бұрын
@@faisalleeds It also doesn't help that my EVs have had incredibly expensive faults and I've learned how many different systems can fail and how they all are crazy expensive. I had full warranty but I'm not risking something breaking and the manufacturer deciding they won't cover it. Especially after my BMW's charging system was fried by a simple voltage spike through a charger (which I though couldn't happen) and the service techs told me it happens all the time... Replacing the car's charging module cost almost as much as a full ICE engine replacement... Another EV of mine had the battery cooling system fail catastrophically and they never even wanted to tell me how much those warranty repairs would've cost if I would've had to pay. Probably 2x an ICE engine swap...they had to dismantle half the car to fix the battery cooling system! Twice I had an EV of mine being fixed for a month! Over the past 10 years with ICE I had to replace one 12V socket, otherwise just routine servicing every 2 years or so.

I feel the total opposite about you guys talking about EVs. I actually find it very reassuring to hear other people, especially enthusiasts or people in the industry, have honest conversations about EVs. Especially when it comes to the true feasibility and practicality of them. I think many of us legitimately worry about the push to EVs knowing the tech truly isn’t ready, the prices are stupid, the long term maintainability of them is bleak, and they’re targeting the 1% of the world - which doesn’t help the masses adopt them, which was always the point… to reduce emissions in mass. So hearing you guys challenge the push is exactly what everyone needs to hear. I’m not “anti-EV.” I’m just anti-bad idea. And right now, they’re a bad idea for 99% of drivers around the world because they’re too expensive, require constant charger access, and are dirty as fuck to manufacture. SAVE THE PLANET: DRIVE OLD CARS LONGER. I’ve done the math, and driving an old, dirtier car longer will offset the carbon footprint compared to buying a new EV every 3 years.

Brightened up my day as always when I listen to this, ignore the haters. The vitriol from EV owners is probably exacerbated by the fact they continuously get it in the neck from ill informed Neanderthals who believe the internet and social media is the truth. But certainly not something to get down about As for the Taycan Turbo GT, who 'needs' any GT product, Cayenne Turbo GT, Macan GT, even a GT3/RS? It's a sales exercise and one where they already have a number of customers they can sell these to and make profit on so why not! It's the same moot point regarding the Flewitt era at McLaren Automotive, they made the special editions as they had customers asking and ready to pay for them! As for the pricing, I'm a firm believer manufacturers are front loading more now more than ever in that they have increased their profit margins in each vehicle knowing there is less later in the ownership cycle. If the rumours are to be believed, Taycan's over 6 years old won't be sold unless privately, they'll be recycled. Same with eTron GT. Keep up the great work, looking forward to the next live podcast session so I can come along to see how much Tony tries to go in on my car!

I am so sick of exactly what you're talking about- the endless hate discussions, despite it being just an awesome car, I just don't like what it represents, as if I'm some eco trooper who think I'm better than everyone else. It's just a great car, that suits certain lifestyles. My exige you could have said the same about and a RR vogue you could also say the same! Just buy what you want and enjoy. Tony hits the nail on the head with EV. As he well knows it's not the cost of a car it's the cost to change. If Joe Public buys an EV and tech moves as we hope and wish the problem is when he comes to change the next time the car will have devalued so much that the cost to change figure gets bigger and Joe Public just feels as if he's paying for the Manufactures and Government Rule makers failings. Keep the discussion going lads. The negative squad aren't even smart enough to work out you're actually asking things to change for their benefit too.

I don't think I've ever watched an episode in which I agree so much with both Sam and Tony! It's very sad that the current state of public discourse is such that so many people refuse to be able to agree to disagree. If we were all the same the world would be a boring place. If we were all the same we may as well be androids off a production line. It's high time we all got back to respecting the right of other people to think differently, whether or not they are right or wrong, or just have a different take that is neither universally right nor wrong, but valid nonetheless. We need proper debates not heated exchanges of opinions. When it comes to EVs, if they are to become the sole future of any form of transportation, let alone transportation as a whole, a whole new reality would have to come into being. That's a fact. That doesn't mean they can't or won't be a substantial part of the mix. That doesn't mean EV technology isn't already good enough for many people. But we need to be able to discuss the motivation for pushing EVs. We need to be able to discuss the downsides of EVs, such as, the mining of the raw materials, and the carbon footprints along the way to production, in production, and in shipping to the consumer versus alternatives. We need to be able to discuss the pre-loading of environmental impact versus alternatives. We even need to be able to have an open discussion about the science behind climate alarmism that is behind the push for EVs in the first place. Personally, I used to be an EV hater. My position has now changed. However, I'm currently concerned about all the negative press regarding battery fires, cost of insurance, etc. I'm also concerned about technologies that aren't exclusive to EVs, which if they fail are very dangerous, and others that are intrusive. IMO, EVs are too expensive, but it's not just the prices of new EVs that are ridiculous. I think if you've got the ability to charge at home and you primarily use a vehicle around your local area, an EV can definitely work for you. EVs can also work for longer journeys for some people depending on many factors. I'd like to see more EV city cars. And as the average commute is less than 10 miles, an EV with a 200 mile summer range would be more than adequate for most people. Personally, if I can charge at home, I'd happily have an EV. Most ICE city cars have engines that are unworthy of note. I also think there's a case for luxury EVs. Personally, a sports car needs a characterful petrol engine, but I have no need to try and force that opinion on anyone else. All we need is to respect the opinions of others. And if we can't do that when it comes to automobiles it's little wonder we have so much societal division. But it's definitely possible to respect the opinions of others, and have proper debates. How do I know? It wasn't all that long ago, in my lived experience, where this was in fact the normal state of affairs! We can and should return to that normality ASAP.

Always keep going. Don't be put off by haters. Do a Joe Rogan and call them out. Or mute them. You cannot let your life be determined by someone else's opinion. But I do agree, the less battery chat the better!

It's your show, so talk about whatever you want to. There are plenty of other options for people who want something different. I currently drive a 2018 Audi S4 which I really like but many (including you) would probably say is at the boring end of performance cars. I like the sound, the performance, the comfort, how it looks, the practicality and I can even get 400 miles out of a tank of petrol if I try. I've no real objection to going electric and I'll probably downsize for my next car, but I'm going to keep the S4 until the manufacturers make something I want. Currently none of them do.

You answered your own question about Porsche... they can build them for very little extra and they will sell them all for a huge profit... its a money making game at the end of the day and that's the only reason they need for that car to exist. I think electric will be the future. As batteries will get better range, let’s say 1500 miles in the future? It’s probably possible. However at this moment I don’t understand why people would spend double on a worse product if combustion is still around

That Taycan should have been a hybrid.::had your gt3 engine revving to 9k driving the rear wheels with a couple small motors on the front wheels adding another 400 hp. Would have been lighter and almost as fast and sound amazing. That would be worth 200k.

I think the Taycan GT is the electric version of a one car garage. It does everything good. It almost got McLaren Senna performance at Laguna Seca and that car has no other purpose. Still a four door limousine is not for me and Evs still lack character. Maybe the Alpine version of the R5 can change that. I love this podcast. You guys are great.

If Lucid can sell the Lucid Air for ridiculous amounts of money, and Tesla can sell the Plaid, I don't see why Porsche wouldn't want to try and beat them at their own game. Being top of the heap of the sedan EV sector has value to their brand rep and would drive sales of the lower models in the range. You could argue that any top of the range car is pointless like an M5, RS6, E63S but it brings coolness to the range and relieves the stupid of their excess of cash so I say why the hell not. Personally I figure out how much power I want and go for that model in the range (e.g. 545i, E500, S500). I could have gone for the top one in the range but it usually brings harshness and horse power that you rarely get to put to use.

I wish Porsche would put a combustion engine in a Taycan. A 4.0 GTS or even with a turbo in that body would be fantastic.

Yes, you have to ignore the haters at the same time Tony will take many more years before he can open his mind up enough for EV’s. I have a Tesla for daily drives and an old red sports car for the weekend. For me, if the perfect balance ( but yes , I have a charger at home !)

The fast cars that get the most negative analysis when they are new tend to end up being the most interesting later. Interesting but flawed models somehow are fascinating. That Taycan might just be one of those when we are all stuck in electric cars limited to xyz horsepower and such and such top speed.

Please don’t ever apologise for criticising EV’s. You speak the words of 99% of car owners! I’ve been through hot hatches, big V8’s, hybrids and now in an EV (due to BIK tax) and I hate it. 6 months in and I want to hand it back! Keep at it boys 👍👍

I drive 36 miles round trip to and from work and considered getting a base model Taycan as a daily driver but the price and cost of a battery replacement is what keeps me from getting one. So I’ll continue to enjoy my MK7.5 GTi ( manual ) till then.

I have a 10 year old EV. You won’t need to replace the battery. It’s a big a worry as replacing the engine when you buy an ICE. It’s not something worth thinking about.

I´m a big Porsche fan with two 911s. But I drive a Model S as my family car. Spending 120-200´pounds on a electric Porsche that has less range, less charging places and less tech is not my thing. I really like my Tesla but I´m very glad for driving the 911s on the weekends!! EVs are great but only as a A to B car!!

36:20 stunning performance by two "experts" it seems. Porsche sold globally 40,000 Taycan last year. That's 30% more than Panamera or twice as much as 718 sales. But sure, nobody wants performance sedans. Like every other performance sedan derivative - from AMG or BMW M - Porsche is now adapting certain versions of their electric cars for track use. Nobody needs a Macan Turbo, that's why it's fun.. If you'd look behind zero to sixty times, you'll see Porsche has done great things with it's latest "Active Ride" suspension...

LOL youre a clown, they sold more because they were sold to business owners who got huge discounts and and tax reliefs compared to the petrol cars, if it was the other way around then so would the figures be. taycans are now globally the least desired cars, fact (even porsche wont buy it back now), and if they took the bribes (subsidies) away they would sell any. there are 1000s of them sat at dealerships rotting and the owners that are stuck with these piles of crap not only dont like the car and have major reliably issues, including locking owners inside and not working in the cold, cases where 2millimeter scratches on the outer casing has written off the entire battery which is 60k to replace, they also cant sell it cos they are all 30k in negative equity after 1 year. im not sure what youre smoking but these 2 are clearly more informed than you!!
