IMO Boimler and Mariner exude too much found family energy to ever hook up. They're like cousins that get sent to their grandparents house during the summer, spend the whole time driving each other crazy but love each other all the same.

I came into this show with limited Star Trek experience, having seen the movies (old and new), Discovery, and stray episodes of other shows. I never felt left out by the references. The jokes work on their own, the references that I get just add an extra layer. The references that I didn't get just made me want to watch all the other Star Trek, so I'm doing that right now.
@tyrant-den884
@tyrant-den884 Ай бұрын
I find it fascinating that only big time trekkies ever have a problem with the references.
@Swenglish
@Swenglish Ай бұрын
@@tyrant-den884 I think they underestimate the writers' ability to construct reference jokes. The key is delivering enough information that the audience doesn't need to already know the reference to get how the setup and punchline relate to each other. Just like how well constructed science and history jokes don't require the audience to be scientists or history buffs. The mistake would be relying on the recognition of the reference itself to *be* the joke or making in-jokes that only make sense if you know the reference already. Recognizing the *archetype* of what's being referenced is often enough, and you don't need to have seen any Star Trek to know archetypes and tropes that exist in countless stories outside of Star Trek. Like, you can juxtapose Ransom with Riker or Kirk or whatever, or you can just juxtapose him with a classic masculine hero archetype, and the jokes work either way.

The reveal and subsequent overuse of Bradward’s full first name is a thing of comedic beauty. I’ve always appreciated shows with layers of comedy, whether it be for those of different ages or those of different background knowledge. Maybe one day you’ll watch other star treks and rewatch this and get a whole new set of jokes but even if you don’t it’s still a good time, because it doesn’t rely on references for all the humor.

Love that the Tendi / Rutherford plot ends up being driven by the official version of SF Debris’s “I just wanna be a botanist” take on starfleet personnel. Also now it’s canon that the live action version of Bradward is indeed his voice actor it makes the size of that black bar even more impressive!

I think that a well written reference joke still works if you don’t know the reference. It just takes it from the specific to the general. For example, when Mariner is listing all of the different things that Barb could be, it works as a general sci-fi trope joke, because of course there’s a million different kinds of shapeshifters and alien spies and whatever. But if you really know the lore, it just works on another level where you get to laugh at the specificity of some of the references. It adds a layer, but even without that layer I think it still works. I personally cracked up when she rules out Barb being a “dauphin” (the shape changer that was Wesley’s first kiss) because I remember seeing that word as the title and looking it up (it basically means next in line to the throne) and adding it to my vocabulary from that episode. And it’s such a weird specific reference that it just caught me by surprise.

As someone who saw Lower Decks become one of my surprise favorite shows and having it become my go-to feel good show, I'm having such a good time watching you two get such a kick out of it. I think the show did a good job striking a balance with the in-jokes. I think they're done in such a way that they provide some fun extra flavor and texture for the people who get the references, but I don't think it acts as a barrier to entry... they're there, but they're not done in way that is distracting to newcomers. It reminds me a bit of Witcher 3 and the Witcher books. I played Witcher 3 before reading any of the books, and not having that knowledge didn't impact the game. There might have been some rare moments where I thought, "Oh, that must be a reference to something," or, "That's just a generic reference to give fake background to a character/relationship/etc," but it never took me out of it. And then I read the books and replayed Witcher 3, and there so many more references I got now that I had the background to work with! And I think Lower Decks is the same way- you're rewarded for background knowledge, but you're not punished for not having it.

20:50 Someone else could have said something similar but I do remember commenting a while back when others were pressuring you Gals to watch all of DS9 and VOYAGER and I said that if you didn't want to you shouldn't due to there being 7 seasons for each and 25 episodes per each season. That is, of course, a LOT of content to go through. I'm enjoying watching this as my first reaction when watching the first episode was that this might not be for me. The fast paced, frenetic style of not just the story but their dialogue seemed ..., well, annoying lol But it is, of course, really funny. So, yes, I am enjoying it.

It just now occurs to me that this ending doesn't quite make sense. The bug only seems to be making Boimler attractive to a single person. Surely, if the goal was reproduction, it would need to attract most. Not that you can't fix it with a better explanation that limits its reach. Just that Mariner's explanation doesn't make sense. Honestly, it seems like the little guy just has the hots for this particular woman. Hence still trying to appeal to her once removed.
