Ironically, pretty much almost all of the stuff Matt Ward wrote that *wasn’t* Ultramarine centered, like the Necrons, was actually pretty good. Seriously, the whole reason Necrons are now robot space Egyptians and have characters like Trazyn, Imotekh, The Silent King, etc, exist are entirely because of Matt Ward.

The new necrons are not the best creation of Ward, my personal opinion, he has saved too little from what the necrons were originally, although in general he is not the worst author, he wrote a lot of good things for FB and AOS.

Best part about Caedo: his Sue-ish combat capabilities here is easily exolained by the fact that he's a veteran. Plus, even his name is badass. Like, what else should we exprct from an Ultra-Veteran whose name is literally translated to "I Kill Evil." Total badass.

But the named marine thing here does point out something interesting: the creator of Boltgun created Caedo as a Ward-esque marine, made an obvious joke with that badass name (see also: Cato Sicarius and Marneus Calgar), and put in the effort to make him seem believable as Warhammer's Doomguy. Don't know if that ruins the possible joke or not, but it is quite a nice touch on a metanarrative level.

Some Boltgun tips: Rule one of Boltgun, never stand still for any reason. Second, never run in a straight line if you can help it. Blue horrors can be completely ignored since they are there to distract you from the real threats and to punish you for ever standing still. Never move predictably, the AI is programmed to AGGRESSIVELY and ACCURATELY lead their shots if you’re dumb enough to move in a straight line. Throw grenades straight down at your feet while sprinting to wipe out anything chasing you. Grenade liberally, there’s tons. Threat priority is clutch, destroy termies marines and flamers, then pink horrors, and then just backpedal and shotgun the blue horrors en mass. Plasma for Chaos Terminators and CSM, bolter for Flamers and Pinkies, shotgun blue horrors unless you’ve herded up six or seven then grenade them. Taunting might seem unnecessarily, but it creates a vacuum effect that sucks up all the health and armor pickups in an area, strategic use of it can be the difference between slowly scooping us +2 after +2 or getting an immediate 30. Easy peasy.

I can’t edit this for some reason: also, you can steamroller right over cultists and blue horrors while sprinting, or squish them by dropping on them from above. Herd horrors into an alcove, jump and grab the ledge, then immediately hop off and squash them like Mario stomping a turtle.

Technically the blueberries are supposed to be the blandest of all the legions, they are the guys you can put into any role and they do OK but nothing exceptional by Astartes standards, even their primarch is supposed to be the generalist leader that can do logistics like a god and does tactics for a hobby. Matt Ward somehow took that and went "Oh, so they are designed to fill any role, obviously that means they are better than everyone else at ALL of them!"

The funny thing is that in all of his posturing about the Codex Astartes, Leandros proceeded to violate a very big part of it by calling the inquisition. Concerns of potential chaos taint and disloyality are to be reported to the chapter's librarians and/or chaplains instead so it can be dealt with internally.

I like to think of Matt Wards works like many other writers of WH40k as a perspective of Ultramarines. Maybe even how Ultramarines see themselves. They like to hype themselves up. They are the TRY HARD MARINES. The Vegeta Marines. The Seto Kaiba Marines. The point of the Ultramarines is not that they are the best, it’s that they try so hard to be the best. That’s why I love them as a chapter. To me, they are the baseline of the Adeptus Astartes. As for what I think of the feats like Caedo and Calgars, I don’t view that as something they can do because they are Ultramarines, but because they are Caedo and Calgar and so on. There are SO MANY heroes in the WH40k world. Ultramarines Captain Titus, Space Wolves Ragnar Black Mane, Death Guard Nathaniel Garo, World Eater/Thunder Warrior Endryd Haar! None of these legends are defined by their chapters/legions. They are defined by their own individual actions that enable them to stand apart from their brethren. Malum Caedo especially. The guy is pretty much what Gray Knights are supposed to be.

I choose to believe that Khorn was empowering him during the game just to fuck with Nurgle & Tzeentch. This also explains why you don't fight bloodletters despite them having been there during Titus' fight. Khorn is holding them back while his unwitting champion Malum Caedo is cutting down the forces of Khorn's rivals.

I've been told Kaldor Draigo was the Doomguy of 40k, but Malum Caedo takes the title. Probably because Boltgun *is* 40k DooM. GW once against taking that "inspiration" from other IPs and aggregating to their own. I'm not complaining, this is absolutely awesome. But it begs the question, if the Doom Slayer was transported into 40k, which chapter would he best fit on?

Wanna hear a cool idea I have for making 40K games AMAZING? Too bad, I’m gonna tell you anyway. In detail… So each of the original 18 legions becomes their own franchise with its own developers. So, for example, you would have these developers who are responsible for creating all Dark Angels games. And the games would follow the lore etc. So the first game would start with Lion waking up in his little space cradle as it is flying in space and you have to steer/crash it to the nearest planet, which is Caliban. The game would be the same style as the Witcher where you level up, collect shit and actually fight and do shit rather than that turn-based stuff. Anyway, so you go around slaying the beasts of Caliban and other stuff till the E arrives. Then you head back Terra an do some stuff. In the next game would have you at the head of the Dark Angels doing whatever game next in the lore. And then you have this for each chapter - loyal and traitor. Imagine playing an Arkham-stealth style game where you are the Nighthaunter doing horrible things to bad people in the dark. Or Lehman playing fetch with wolves. Well thank you@@GeneralBradley101VA The possibilities are endless! Imagine playing as Vulkan where you and the E are hunting salamanders. Or when E and Lehman had those contests when they first met. Or Mortarion trying trying yo kill his necro-daddy. And there would be multiplayer where you and your friends are a squad of whatever loyalist legion about in space and some World Eaters, who are some other players in their own squad, are trying to board your ship. I'm not even gonna go into the orks cos that would be a whole different thing with all of the clans and the game would start off with you emerging from the ground and trying to avoid everything bigger than you while you krump everything smaller than you. And you grow every time you win and then you get your own little gang of boyz and you fight humies and other orks until you start a WAAAAAAAGH, take over the whole planet and then head out into space! Thinking about this is both exciting and also depressing cos it's never gonna happen. But hey, it's helping the time pass until loadshedding is over.

Now Malum Caedo is a chad, but he's not doomguy level. In the DOOM lore even before becoming a demigod with insane strength that absorbs the power of every demon he kills (with the weakest being easily able to rip a person to shreds) and wearing literally indestructible armour, hell even before finding out the forces of hell killed his rabbit and family, doomguy kicked ass as a regular human. He fought through the mars bases and hell itself because he had nothing better to do and no other way home.

As I recall, the inquisitor was more of a total moron than a traitor and basically started fucking around with warp power, to the point that he literally opened himself up to the power of the warp while on a spaceship traveling through the immaterium, and he got a little tiny piece of the warp as a present that he could somehow bring into realspace because warp fuckery obeys no rules including those of the universe it's in. So he set about converting that little piece into a power source, for the glory of the imperium and so on. Then chaos stabbed him in the back and a daemon used his still fresh corpse as a meat suit to fool Titus into helping him. I actually think it may have been the Orks that filled him full of holes and allowed that little deception to happen.
