Who Knew Baked Beans Could Be THIS Good!?

Baked beans are a British staple, they are sweet, salty, savoury and packed full of good stuff like vitamins n that. Usually we chuck them on some toast with lashings of butter and maybe a bit of cheese. This time though 'm jazzing them up a bit and sticking them in a pie with some other delicious things!
I first came across his recipe on tiktok, but I have changed it a little to make it my own. As a cost saving, I removed the fried onions and used chives instead removing the need to waste energy frying onions. You can of course add whatever spices, herbs, extra veggies you like to make it your own.
#bakedbeans #costofliving #budgetrecipes
To make my bean pie you will need:
► 2 cans of baked beans (i used branston 75p each)
►About 250g of ham off cuts
►A handful of freshly chopped chives or use dried
►3 hard boiled eggs chopped up
►Roughly 700g of mashed potato
►2 tsp of garlic powder
►1+1/2 tsp of smoked paprika
►Cheese for the topping (optional)
►Salt & pepper
Serve with some veg of your choice and good dollop of HP sauce

Who says flavour has to be expensive! Tip for the mash - I usually cook a large pan full of mash. In the long run, it saves time and energy (both through the meter and mine!). So I am used to mash being drier than I like. This is easily remedied with the addition of a little milk - but be careful, it soon goes from a difficult to work crumbly mess to a disgusting slop. I really don't know the answer to this one, and I appreciate how much energy a grill uses just to get up to temperature - but the extra crispness is so worth it if you can afford it. However, I wonder how close an effect you would get with a culinary gas torch, and perhaps even more importantly, how does the energy cost compare? P.S. if you are batch cooking mash, unless you have Popeye arms, a potato ricer is well worth having - the larger, the better. They are not a ridiculous price, but I am sure they can be found second-hand, especially as more and more cafés and restaurants are squeezed out of business.

Thanks for the tips as always Neil. I'll pin this as I'm sure my viewers will find them helpful. Yes, a ricer is the best way for smooth mash. I always use white pepper for mash as well, not black. It just works better for some reason.

@Adam Garratt A little nutmeg can make a change too - but you need to keep tasting as the difference between not enough to be worth the effort and too much is not that great.

@@forandonbehalfof4753 Hi, please don’t take this as a hateful reply. You’re 100% correct fresh will always taste better BUT… Adam created these recipes to help the novice, the hard working, the elderly, single parents and those working to a budget. He’s more than able to produce higher priced dishes but if you watch his channel he constantly refers to helping others etc his posts are intentionally aimed to help those who need it. He’s also hysterical; watch his scotch egg post. Ps. Even if it’s frozen mash there’s nothing better than a good knob of butter and plenty of black pepper to bring it back to life 😉 Pleasure to meet you new friend.xx

@@Thenakedforager Errr..... Once upon a time I was all of those things.poor/novice, etc.. Don't worry: You wererent being hatey! Tip: In charity shops, just after Xmas you'll probably find lots of new (unread) cookbooks. Oh! Find out John Torode's way to cook rice: It's perfect and far cheaper than the usual method. Don't know where you are but stores like LidlAldi (German) are a godsend. Any spare change goes into the jar and when there's enough; get the next tool on your checklist. Get a slow cooker. Biggest you can so you can freeze lots of meals (in bags/tubs/etc.). Keep your fridge/freezer absolutely full. Fill any space with full plastic water bottles. Fuller is cheaper on the leccy.... Don't forget to squeeze water bottles before going in freezer as water expands into ice. A little sesame oil added to normal/cheap oil when frying/shallow-frying can enhance the taste. Mustard in your mash: It's a fantastic flavour enhancer. Do you think I should change my "handle to "THE NAKED YOGIC LUNGER"?.......

It's similar to something I do but use a tin of corned beef, sliced and put in the bottom of a loaf tin, add a tin of baked beans and grated cheese, then top with mash and a bit more cheese and put in oven, and serve with veg and gravy.

Americans don't get brits love of canned baked beans because we eat and love such a variety of delicious beans here. Most are homemade or semi-homemade; new england baked beans. Bbq beans, white beans with ham, pinto beans, black beans, and Refried beans. Look them up. So delicious.

At the supermarket, it is worth checking the reduced price products. Often are canned products that have been dented. Getting cans of beans, soups, etc about half price usually. Premade mash too maybe, due to it being on its use by date, but if you check the packaging it may be able to be frozen. Just then put it in the fridge to defrost, for about 1-2 days in advance.

For those that love a little kick, chucking some chilli flakes on top of the cheese will kick this into high gear. You can get massive bags of chilli flakes for about 3 quid from Indian shops and they last for months! Also, a wee bit of Lee & Perrins to the beans as well. Condiments can make so much difference to simple meals. My 3 main keep-ins for the cupboard are stock cubes (for when there's nothing but pasta or rice in the cupboard), chilli flakes and Worcestershire sauce.

Have to try this! Thanks, Adam! May I toss a tasty, VERY low-cost bean dish at you? It's from my Italian side. Toss 2 tins Cannellinni Beans (with liquid) - 87 cents/tin - into a slow cooker. 1 tin diced tomatoes (preferably with Olive Oil, Garlic & Basil) - 97 cents/tin. Toss in about 1/2 cup diced leftover roast chicken, or BEST OF ALL 1/2 cup diced Pancetta or Prosciutto. You don't need meat at all, but a BIT is nice. Toss in a stick of butter, a few tablespoons of minced garlic, Italian seasoning, a teaspoon or so of black pepper... Cook on high for an hour, then cut to low for 2 more. Add about 1 cup of al-dente cooked Fusilli, Casarecce, Gnocchetti Sardi, Ditalini, even the TINY bowties/wagon wheels. (You want a compact pasta) and let cook another 1 or 2 hours. Enjoy with Parmesan. Less than $4-5 and you have a VERY hearty meal for 2 or 3 people.

Eggs in the USA are very expensive they have gone up in my grocery store up to 9.00 dollars and in my tiny family grocery store near my house they are 12.00 . 😞

Thats absolutely shocking irma! If you have the resources, it's worth getting a couple of chickens to produce your own fresh eggs at home. I'd love to have some but I live in a flat, plus I don't think mogs would appreciate it lol

Here in Greece Branston beans are more expensive than Heinz - and even then you need a mortgage to buy them as they have to be imported - (luckily there is a Greek company that does the BEST baked beans I've ever tasted for half the price). Thanks for the recipe Adam x

Another great video. Thanks, Adam. Branston beans all the way. Won't eat any other. Thanks for the tip. On the offcuts of ham. Didn't know you could do that. My preferred bought in brown sauce is daddies, but home-made is best { Search Steve Owen here on YT for brown sauce recipe } 🙋🏻‍♂😊

Nice and simple, thanks. I will probably use some Frankfurter Sausage thingies I have for the protein cos I don't have any Ham. I may also use up some Smash which I got as a 'just in case' for Christmas. I don't know if they still do them but HP used to make good Baked Beans. You could of course use dried Canneloni Beans to further lower the cost and ad or not some Ketchup to compensate for the lack of Tomato Sauce. Personally I think this is nice as 'Fork Food' and isn't the key to eliminating the gray Yolk to quench the Eggs ASAP. I also like to peel them immediately afterwards. I have an Egg Boiler and I am told on the Air Fryer Web Sites that you can use an Air Fryer which I think is daft. Any chance of making one of your practical slants ona 'Cheese & Potato Pie' cos I havn't had one of those since I was Divorsed a long time ago. Welcome to 2023.

Thanks for the comment James, yes the secret to no grey ring, is firstly not over cooking and then rapid cooling once cooked. I have seen the air fryer method as well, but I have not tried it myself yet. I might do a quick short on it soon.

When buying smoked paprika, folk need to be aware that they are not all equal. I know that Adam understands this already, but It is basically* made from dried peppers and comes in sweet or hot varieties, and is smoked or unsmoked so please check the label before buying the one you like. Rule No.1 is that it is NOT the same as cayenne pepper which it resembles in looks but which is made from chillies. *There's more nuance to it than this, but supermarkets will usually stick to sweet/hot/smoked/unsmoked.

Question - where/how specifically did you get the ham offcuts 400g for 93p? If from supermarket deli counter - which one, and what time are they available and what specifically do you ask for?

Looks lovely but I can’t afford eggs like that as they are now around $5-9 a dozen depending where you buy them so I’d use more meat as it’s cheaper right now in the USA the whole country is wtf with eggs and the usual thing if it has eggs in it the cost is being passed on to the consumer 🤦🏼‍♀️

We Americans are only confused by Brits love of canned beans. Do Brits ever make beans from scratch- baked beans, pinto beans, white beans? We eat many in the U. S. from bags of dried beans.

If you take the price of Heinz baked beans (without the stupid zed), and turn it into the equivalent litre price, the cost of petrol would be £3.26/litre. Who would pay that? Aldi's baked beans have exactly the same ratio of beans and tomatoes (51%/34%) as Heinz, have more in the tin and cost 34p! They don't have a weird Heinz taste, either.
