It's not that they didn't keep Stamkos, it's the way they did it. Yes, it's perfectly reasonable for the Bolts to make a business decision, but to fans on the outside it looks like a team left their captain and (former, at least) franchise player twisting in the wind - twice! - without a contract and then completely lowballed him when they finally got around to it. Compare that to Boston and Bergeron, or Crosby, Ovechkin, etc. Stamkos certainly seemed willing to make compromises on dollars or term to stay in Tampa but they came off as completely disinterested. Which, again, is their right! But jeez, even Chicago was more respectful when not re-signing Kane and Toews. Stamkos is a millionaire with 2 rings, he doesn't need our pity, but I think other players will remember the way this all went down.

@ketchup016 I don't disagree with anything you're saying. But people are pointing out that Hedman got the same deal as stamkos got in Nashville and acting like it was disrespectful to offer that to Hedman but not to stamkos. And people keep bringing up the fact that all the other "core" players in Tampa got locked up on extensions before they were free agents, and therefore it's disrespectful for them to not do the same with stamkos. The real reason those guys got extensions early is that they fit the future of the team a lot better than stamkos does. The only thing i think they should've done is just tell him they weren't bringing him back, full stop. The lowball offer was unnecessary

I know that might sound silly to a fan of a team that usually gets the benefit of the doubt in free agent situations, because Tampa has nice weather or no tax or has been a good team. One of the better teams in the west, together with Avs, Dallas, Vegas and maybe Edm/Win/Van. They got the pieces now to go deeper in the playoffs, winning though, dunno. East still looks strong. While FLA lost quite a bit of their depth, their forward group is unchanged in the top 9. And they got decent defence still considering they don't play a high skill defence with their defenders.
