I think what makes this song so special is the way Whitney flipped the arrangement that was completely different then Dollys. That arrangement became the standard. Jennifer Hudson performance of this song I'll never forget that performance. My favorite part was when Whitney stood up with her hands on her hips and yell sang my song and they did the top head note together. Masterful video.

Kelly is my all time favorite singer so I'm probably biased in saying that her performance was the best. I was happy to see her get some recognition. When I see videos on great singers she is often left out. Kelly is world class and very underrated.

The Morissette girl, I've heard if before through a similar page/video to this and was impressed. She naturally did a great job, I love how her voice works and how she works her voice. She is very special and very talented.

I love Kelly Clarkson's version for the interpretation of it - as you said perfect blend of Whitney's and Dolly's. Her vocals were amazing as always but I think she could have done even better vocally if she does the full Whitney version. Jessie's was great as well, I just wish the last few notes were held out a little bit more

One singer I'd love to hear a full rendition from is Beyonce. She sang the introduction of the song back in 2014 live, but not the full version. Nonetheless, what she sang of it displayed some major vocal control and was very emotive, so I think it'd be interesting to see where she'd take the rest of the song.

The only lacking in Morissette as a singer is her height. ..but she surpass them all in vocal.

No disrespect to others, I'm just a Morissette Amon fan. Whitney Houston songs are part of her training songs that includes that of Beyonce, Mariah, Jessie J, etc and she sings in all genres and in several languages. When you listen to her, it's like listening to many divas of different generations all packed in one small body. I never saw any popular artist that can nail any song in all genres. 🏆🥰 Before, I can't even believed that she can perform heavy rock metals and also fast clear Rapping being an RnB, pop, ballad artist.

you get mad props for recognizing that the bridge and close of, "i'm your baby tonight" was (indeed) one of the most challenging vocal moments of whitney's career! so much so that she was never able to replicate it live.

I would like to comment on the shown performances, all of this is my opinion though. Demi: That performance was really not good, I can't say anything else. Xtina: I'm not a fan of her AT ALL, but I wish for her to perform this song again because I could feel the potential, I felt a bit sad for her. Nicole: There was nothing wrong with the rendition but it didn't really catch me. Solar: She did a great job, I also liked her Vibrato for this song. Lara: Here I have a few questions: You said Lara struggled with the agility, but so did Jennifer and she is much higher on the list. Besides that, I think her emotiveness was absolutely fine here though she has way more emotive performances (I think of the whole "From Lara with Love" concert and her performance of "Je suis malade", where she performed the end without the mic and a capella). I think she should have been placed higher. Sohyang: I actually liked the way she improvised and got in with some new runs but I get that's a matter of taste. Sohyang actually performed the song earlier in her carreer in a higher key which lets her voice shine even more, but I don't think there was anything wrong with performing it in the original key, it fitted perfectly with the simple backing with the guitar. I think she should have been placed higher. Morisette: A great cover, what else can I say. Leona: Another great cover. Ailee: Ailee was absolutely killing it, by far the most impressive cover. I think it's a bit rough to say she didn't carried the emotion in this cover cause she actually cried in the end of it. I loved it and I think she should have been placed a lot higher. Jessie: Vocally it's mostly fine (I don't like the way her larynx drops down to the basement at some low notes but that's matter of taste) but her approach was way over it and actually took away any emotion for me. It's kinda Jessies thing to give that 120% but for me it didn't quite work in this cover. Kelly: Great delivery, I really like it. Jennifer: Massive respect for Jennifer to perform this so great in front of Queen Whitney herself, as well as attempting some of the riffs while not being a riffer. Besides what I said at Lara, I actually liked other performances way better than this, but I see why people love it so much. My top 3 would be #3 Sohyang #2 Lara #1 Ailee by far

Have to disagree on several points. You said Lara struggled with vocal agility and you ranked JHud first when she actually struggled with runs and dodged the transitions. Also Lara is definitely very good at emoting. Disagree about Ailee lacking emotions as well, it is one of the renditions with most emotion for me. Regine is not here but I would say she has one of the best renditions as well. Very great emoting, agility, power, and transitions. Imo, the best ones are Regine/Lara/Leona/Ailee/Kelly.

Even Blind Freddie could see that Lara Fabian gave the best rendition. And to accuse her of lack of agility is just parroting "received opinion". She is capable of singing riffs and runs, but her preference is to sing the pure melodic line.

I adore Leona's voice and humble personality but I can't deny that she wasn't as emotive as Jennifer. I also recall watching Jessie J's rendition and being quite impressed but when you pointed out the theatrical gestures that got in the way of the earnest emotions that the song evokes, I couldn't help but be astonished because your analysis was so spot on! Also, thanks for giving credit where credit is due and highlighting important aspects of singing that most don't! Jennifer gets a lot of recognition for her vocals with the general public (for some reason her music doesn't sell as well) however in the vocal community most overlook and even attempt to completely diminish her talent but she surely has one of those voices that moves people to their feet. I must say, you have such a good ear for catching the nuances in vocal delivery (which you really displayed here), vocal characteristics (The way you categorized the various colours of many vocalists' voices) and music in general (I may not know be a stan of Blackpink, but I still remember the way you broke down the song and music video for "Lovesick Girls" . What happens with this song is that Whitney's version has many melismas, trill vocal ornaments and a number of quick notes, which was easy for Whitney's type of voice which could move her voice as she wanted, from the highest to lowest, but in a very sophisticated way, from a simple vocal ornament to a very difficult one, it was easy for her, which makes And this happens with many of her songs they were easy for her but for other singers they can be a little even uncomfortable to sing, it reminds me of a video I saw of Yolanda Adams who has a great voice singing all the man that i need was too difficult for her since it is not a light voice like the one that Whitney possessed, the voice of this mentioned was too light and That's why she was able to do everything she did.
