Now sure Sally is a kind, caring, and thoughtful citizen of Halloween Town. She fits in well and adores the work that they all do, but she’s not a traditional monster. In a town filled with ghosts, horrible clowns that can rip off their faces, and walking hanging trees, Sally is different because she was created by a resident of Halloween Town. She was brought to life by Dr. Finkelstein to serve him.
In reality I think Sally’s mind came from someone who was trying to get their footing in the world before her life was cut short. That’s why she fought so hard to have some autonomy, respect, and appreciation in Halloween Town. I think Sally’s soul came from a young woman who always looked at the world with wonder and wanted to contribute to it which was why she wanted to help Jack as much as she could.
Sally’s brain was originally in someone who wanted to be free, to explore everything there was to offer, and to eventually find love, and she found that after she died, was buried, and somehow ended up in the spookiest holiday town of them all.

I think I know which two candidate could be Sally’s brain. A descendant meg from Hercules. Or KIM POSSIBLE. I know it seems like a stretch but Kim possible was tried to get going in the early 90s but Disney didn’t like the show. It went through two remastering before Disney accepted it. Believe or not it was original plan to air in 1994. But due to remastering it got pushed back until 2002. And if you take the Kim possible movie a sitch in time which makes time travel possible we find out that Kim possible doesn’t make it into the future. Aka she dies some time after the series. It is hinted that she dies in giving birth to twins. But what if she didn’t die their but taken through time? Her abilities would perhaps be considered magic? Aka a witch. I say Sally’s brain is Kim possible who died by being accused of being a witch, because she came through time.

I’ll be honest and say that I really dislike the theory about all of the Halloween town residents being dead and that they were human before they ended up in Halloween town. I always thought that the residents were physical manifestations of human fears and supernatural beliefs that embody the spirit of Halloween. If all of the holiday worlds are physical manifestations of holidays, why is Halloween town different?

What's interesting about Jack and Sally is that they seem to be the only people in Halloween town who want change. Everyone else seems pretty content with their lives and roles to play. Halloween town seems to exist in a limbo state where everything is in a perpetual state of death and decay. Nothing changes at all. I think Jack and Sally are meant to rule Halloween because Halloween is a holiday about change and inverting the status quo. It's about the creepy and scary parts of life suddenly being celebrated, a night where anyone can put on a costume and be anything they want. But when this is your entire existence even that becomes stagnant. Jack and Sally are meant to be because they both want to try other roles out for a change. A pumpkin king trading his crown for a Santa hat to bring joy instead of terror. A lowly ragdoll tricking her master to be her own boss for a while.

I always suspected that Sally was more like a daughter than a potential wife where Dr. Finkelstein was concerned. Regarding Sally herself, the scene where she walks through the snow suggests that was the time period she originally died (a.k.a. in winter), any possible cause of death would be linked to freezing weather.

What's to be confused about? Sally is a creation of a magical creature in a land full of magical creatures. A singing skeleton, a boogeyman comprised of nothing but insects in a canvas sack, and a toy with spinning faces come to life are all good, but an animated ragdoll is confusing?

I can see how it can be a bit confusing as she has no bones, blood, muscle or tissue, at first cause of the stitches some ppl may think she is some sort of zombie as she is made out of human parts, but if she is made out of stuffing from leaves, I’m gonna guess she’s some sort of doll? I’m not really sure but I do know she has Halloween magic in her from the town.

@@DrCrow-bs8jw …but toys/other automatons being “ticklish” has long been a trope to further anthromophize (sp? Don’t judge me) them. Toy Story obviously isn’t in the same universe. But Woody’s shown to be ticklish several times throughout the Toy Story franchise, and in TS2 he’s tickled by Bullseye licking his face while also reacting in annoyance vs pain when his arm is damaged, finally torn off, then damaged again Ie, basically the same rules as what applies to Sally. So…yeah. Sally is a doll-literally. And Anthromorphic Dolls have been a trope since the Steadfast Tin Soldier, if not earlier

I have a theory that Sally is actually a witch from the Salem witch trials era being hanged and the Dr. Finding her chopped corpse in the grave yard her being a witch could explain her more supernatural abilities with alchemy and potion brewing and having short glimpses of the future but that's what I think 🤔.

It may not have been Salem but somewhere in Europe. A young, sweet, servant girl with minor psychic abilities and an understanding of herbalism could easily get labeled a witch without being one.

I’m going to add my own completely unprovable theory. The reason why Dr. Finklestein seems like Sally’s father is because he WAS her father. Neither remembers their human life or the connection. I’m thinking that the Dr. lost his wife, perhaps with the birth of his daughter, and is constantly trying to “find” her by building a bride. In life he experimented with electricity or lightening. As she grew his sweet, uncanny daughter became his assistant. She died during an experiment (lightening strike or maybe poison?). Her father was a broken man and saw himself as a monster. When he died he came to Halloween town as the mad scientist with no memory of the past but still “gives birth” to his daughter.

It could be that Sally was originally from another Holiday or Time Period. She has the skills needed for a Witch during the first Thanksgiving, and the compassion that someone from Christmas Town would have. On top of the fact that she subconsciously knows about Snow, those two colder Holidays make loads of sense.

Good theory. However I have my own theory regarding Sally's familiarity towards snow. It suggests that she died during the winter, a possible cause of death would be an illness caused by freezing weather.

Added theory : I think being stuffed with leaves (instead of blood or bones) may have emphasized her abilities to be an alchemist in nature and also aid her skills as a herbalist. Allowing her to make the potions that she is knowledgeable about. 🌿🍃

She's meant to represent a ragdoll, but the head she has- still contains her brain. That is how she came back to life through electrocution, potions and magic. She just doesnt have the rest of her insides, except her mouth and eyes. Everything else is pure magic on the Dr's part alongside the Frankenstein body part sewing.

I like the idea that Jack and Sally were sweethearts when they were alive, but got separated when Jack was drafted in the revolutionary war and never got to see each other again. Only to be reunited in Halloween town after Jack came back as the Pumpkin king by the spirit of Halloween and Sally was made out of mostly the body of her past life.

I don't think so, I think Sally was first born/made in Halloweentown and didn't have a previous life. The "pieces" he used weren't "her". It's kind of like organ transplants. She may have "inherited" some traits from her parts, but she's not those parts. Like the Frankenstein monster.

You are forgetting the brain that Dr. Finkelstein gave Sally. If Sally did not have a previous life, she would be mindless, if she did however, the majority of her personality would originate from the grey matter, the brain would recall most of the personality & emotions of the original owner.

Why is it that Tim Burton’s characters are always so similar? Emily and Sally are very much alike, as are Victor from Frankenweenie and Victor from Corpse Bride. Even Victor from the Corpse Bride has a dog he loves named Scraps which isn’t Sparky, but it’s so similar you can’t deny there’s probably some correlation between them. Tim Burton is so intelligent and creative

Sally is the younger sister of Emily (Corpse Bride). Curious and devoted to her sister Sally follows Emily into the woods. Where she discovered by evil lord Barkis who hacks her to bits with a sword. Her remains are found and taken to Halloween town where Dr. Finkelstein sews her together and restores her to life. He wants her for his daughter.

About Sally being comfortable with snow; snow has been falling in October for years beyond count, Jack probably isn't familiar with it because he more than likely spends most, if not all, of his time concocting plans for Halloween. Seriously, it seems to me like the dude doesn't get out much, by his own choice, of course.

I believe she is a creation. She was made by Dr. Finklestein to keep him company (in my opinion as a daughter type relationship). 🖤🖤 That is why he is always so concerned when she is gone. He is just an over protective father because he literally made her in his lab like a Frankenstein if you will.

Anonymous Fellow -Exactly. As a kid i always thought that Sally was basically meant to be like a living rag doll (similar to the dolls that we played with as little girls, but somehow alive with a mind of her own), that Dr Finklestein had brought to life to keep him company, & that's why he so selfishly tried to keep her with him as he didn't want to be alone. I mean, as you pointed out, Sally can even jump from a castle window & then sow her limbs back on without feeling pain, as if she's made from soft, non fleshy material, & she even looks almost exactly like a rag doll, so that always made sense to me.

I think Sally was a normal person living between 1600-1800 who was accused of being a witch because of her knowledge on potions and her visions and so dismembered which is why her body often falls apart and then Finklestein found her and put her back together and he told Sally that he created her so she owes him

She didn’t die or live as a human. She was created by Dr. Finkelstein, which is why he was so possessive over her and said “I made you with my own two hands.” He created a conscious rag doll, which was the earliest version of a mate he attempted for himself… hence the latter scene where he mentions how much better his new creation will be from Sally. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I might be wrong about some stuff but according to the book, Sally was born in a different realm. One type of species in the realm were called ragdolls. Her ragdoll parents gave birth to her, but when she was 12, Dr. Finkelstein wanted a daughter. He couldn't ever get a daughter though, so he kidnapped Sally and brought her to Halloweentown. He barricaded the other realm's door and gave Sally an amnesia potion so her parents wouldn't come looking for her, and so she wouldn't go looking for them. He removed the stuffing from inside her and replaced it with dead leaves to make it seem as though he was the one who created her.

I'll be honest, I haven't seen Nightmare, but I saw a review of it. Didn't really get Sally as a rag doll at first glance, seeing her knowledge of plants and potions and emotions. I thought only her arms and legs were made of plants and the rest were made of human reanimated working organs, so I like your theory about her.

I’ve watched some of your videos and I give you credit for the work you put into them. However, I think you may be overthinking things a bit. I’ve seen the film many times since I first saw it in the theater back in ‘93 and I’ve always viewed Sally as one of the doctor’s creations (a rag doll stuffed with autumn leaves) that he can’t control, which adds a little conflict to the story. I never saw her as having a past life, as she was created from inanimate objects, unlike Dr. Frankenstein’s creation that was created with, once living, tissue. I just always thought the magic that animated her came more from the magic of Halloween Town.

I, too, have watched this movie multiple times each year since it was released. And while it's fun to theorize, I have to agree - Sally is simply one of the Doctor's creations - one of his earliest (successful?) creations. That's why she doesn't have a skeleton or organs. I don't get why this video thinks she's a new creation. Sally's restlessness and rebellion speak of adolescence, not a past life. She's behaving very much like a teenage girl: sneaking out, testing boundaries, crushing on a boy. Teenage girls can be surprisingly empathetic (her personality differences) and are often more intuitive (the visions) than they are given credit for, because, you know, they're teenage girls. Even her reaction to the snow that so many comments are saying is proof that she's seen it before can be chalked up to this. She's not really present in the moment with the snow. She basically just helped rescue her crush, who has been pulled away into the spotlight (which she actively avoids lest the Doctor make her go back), and thinks that he isn't interested/doesn't care. She feels alone. She's brokenhearted, mourning what she thinks is an unrequited love. The newness of snowflakes is the absolute last thing on her mind. I believe that her personality is a result of magic being unpredictable, of her being one of the Doctor's earlier creations, created when he didn't know as much about the magic he was wielding to make his creation come to life. If you want to overthink things, I also think Sally is a commentary on free will as well - Sally is not bound by her creator nor her environment to become the same as everyone else in town. It happens in real life too. Ever meet a family where everyone jokes about that one kid being adopted? The emo goth kid in a family full of cheerleaders and football players. The artist in a family of doctors and lawyers. It's more an example of how life, like magic, can be entirely unpredictable.

Oogie Boogie even refers to her as a rag doll, sometimes stories are just stories, with no hidden meaning. Not all artist's stories or creations have to be connected to one another in some giant universe they create. Sally carries around needles and thread to repair herself, she's also a fan of sewing and crafting, I never got the impression she was a Frankenstein monster and always knew she was a rag doll.

The mind of sally and desires and talents carried through even after her death and we see that she’s independent, she’s a good cook, caring and she is getting held back by the doctor, do you think she could be part of an alternative reality where none of the Disney princesses ever got their happy ever after.

i thought she could've been a nurse actually now that i think about it based on this new to me idea that you raise in your video about them having a life before what we see in the movie. she knows about making what to me looks like medication and most likely has medical knowledge based on the fact that she takes care of her creator who is elderly. just my own personal take on her character of course.

🤦😂😂 Sally wasn't human before. She's an animated doll. Always has been. Did everyone completely forget about the Doctor specifically stating, "I made you! With my own two hands..." She was never human, she was always a animated stuffed doll that's the product of an old, lonely doctor's experiment. That's it y'all.

A little late but maybe the reason Sally died originally was because she could have been drowned as a witch, maybe her visions are inherent to her body (like her eyes) & always had that gift. Maybe one day she told the wrong person her secret power, possibly somebody she liked or was engaged to, & was reported to the local witch hunters? And since she wasn't actually a witch, she couldn't save herself from the "trial" and drowned?

The part of where everyone is amazed (except Sally) is starting to make sense. Because in The Town Meeting, in the screen shot of her: She looks like she's thinking (This sounds familiar, but where?) I think that she was either Emily from the Corpse Bride or she was a maiden who wanted to be free

I think actually that Sally has the personality of Emily from Corpse Bride.Emily died at a young age which explains in why Sally wants to be so open and explore her life with no regrets.Emily also has never gotten the love of her life which also explains on why she wants to do everything just for Jack.In the video you showed that Sally had made an little air potion thing that was a butterfly,Emily also had an connection with butterflies from when she passed.Emily passed and was known with butterflies in the air. I think Jack may also be Victor from Corpse Bride not for sure yet.Victor from Corpse Bride also has the same name as Victor from Frankenweenie.They have the same hair style and both has dogs. The dogs have different names but that’s because when they passed on they needed new names otherwise their names wouldn’t make any sense with the names they have from before.Jack Skeleton also has a dog.Kid Victor dogs name was Sparky,If I am correct Sparky either passed around the end or died while Victor was still growing up. In the movie corpse bride older Victor has a dog named Scraps and it sounds pretty close to Sparky.Scraps would make also much more sense bc he has now passed and is pretty much Scraps.Zero is Scraps new name bc now there is Zero of Scraps nor Sparky.Younger Victor grew older to Older Victor and then may have passed and changed his name.Which it sounds crazy but if you really think about it why would Victor wanna be himself when he could be somebody else and not be remembered as the guy who almost married a corpse,The guy who was always clumsy? Sounds crazy but please enjoy and no hateeeeeeee.:)

I don't think Sally is someone who died but rather, following Frankenstein rules, she is a completely different entity, independent from whoever any of her component parts came from -- including the brain. Similar to how Doctor Finklestein's new creation was made with a part of his own brain but is almost certainly not Doctor Finklestein himself.

Going off of the bit you mentioned how at first you thought Sally was a witch. There was someone who theorized she was from the time period that people could have thought she was a witch because of her knowing how to make potions(which at the time could have been herbal medicine) and so the people chopped her up, hanced why she is stitched together.

I have to agree with some of the others, Sally sounds like she was a witch that died for whatever reason and when the Dr created her he brought her back with the magic of Halloween Town. She knows just a bit too much to be just a ragdoll. Her sewing abilities fall hand in hand also with the idea that she's a witch (perhaps a bit of voodoo in her past life)

Corpse bride and nightmare before Christmas, Victoria and Victor, I think Jack was Victor and Sally's brain came from Victoria. So after death they were able to reconnect.

@Isaac Carlson, I got a theory about Corpse Bride, which is a Tim Burton movie, where Emily (aka the corpse bride) is the older sister of Victoria, who’s parents are broke and so Victoria’s arranged to marry Victor who’s family is nouveau rich (new money) and as they open their safe it’s filled with dust and cobwebs, so Emily was the black sheep of the family for taking her family’s money and running away and the Everglot parents banished her from their minds and acted as Victoria was their only child (either that or Victoria was too young to remember Emily was her sister cuz of the age difference?)

Yeah……I suggest reading long live the pumpkin queen. It’s a sequel to the movie but focuses on sally as the pumpkin and discovering more abt other holiday worlds and her past.
