In the Nightmare Before Christmas, all of the monsters come together to celebrate Halloween. Leading these monsters of course is the scariest among them: the Pumpkin King Jack Skellington. Jack is an animated skeleton who has certain abilities which he explains is dead. The most horrifying creature in Halloween Town at some point was alive. At some point Jack Skellington was a human being living outside of Halloween Town, and today we are going to try to figure who he was.

Jack’s backstory is in James and the Giant Peach. He was a pirate captain (great leader and fighter like you said) back in the 1600s who loved to scare people. Jack said “to have died in Kentucky I’m Mr. unlucky and I’m known throughout England and France.” He sailed throughout Europe looting ships abs eventually got lost in Antartica where his ship sunk and his whole crew died. Antarctica like Kentucky is basically in the middle of nowhere (no offense to anyone). Jack’s crew kicked him out after the battle with Mr. Centipede and he decided to become a good guy. He learned how to make the magic green things that grew the Giant Peach and brought him back from the dead. He used them to bring other dead people back including the Mayor and Dr. Finkelstien. If you think about it, Jack highjacked another holiday much like pirates would highjack other ships.

Also, Mr. Centipede calls the pirate captain a “skelington” which is Jack’s last name. He then says “jackpot” as he tries to leave with the compass. The skeleton captain makes the same exact scary face Jack does at the townmeeting.

Yes that's a Jack Skellington cameo but I personally think that if there's any lore with the Jack cameo, then Jack was either convinced to cameo in the movie or that was one of his scares lol

I never considered that Jack was alive before becoming a part of Halloween town. I thought he just came into existance there. The reason I always thought that is because the characters of Halloween town have no concept of love or happiness. They only know how to scare people which makes it seem like they were all born there and that's all they know. The reason why the ending is so sweet is because despite them all living in a loveless world, Jack and Sally finally realise what they were missing and that is love.

Yeah! Exactly! I like to think that Halloween Town is where the creatures all originated from, and Halloween is all that they know about! ^_^ I think that's why Jack never knew about the other holidays, because they would all stay in their own separate Towns! :D

He COULD be from the legend of Sleepy Hollow, but not the headless horseman! I think he is... Ichabod Crane...look he's tall lanky, the REAL life Ichabod was an actual solider in a war and it looks like Jack is dressed in soldier attire in one scene. The theory of him being burned could be true, if you watch or have read the legend of sleepy hollow, a flaming pumpkin head is thrown at Ichabod, where it hits him...and then he is never seen or heard of again. Maybe that's what the whole first scene of him being a pumpkin/scarecrow being lit on fire could be in correlation too, which is him being burned by the pumpkin head. Maybe a pumpkin in flames could have killed him, that’s where his "Pumpkin King" name came from. There is also a scene where Jack sings “Well since I am dead I can take off my head, to recite Shakespearean quotations” him being able to dislodge his head, could be a nod to the headless horseman possibly cutting it off after killing him? It makes sense kind of lol idk, just my theory.

My headcanon is that Jack and The Headless Horseman are not the same people. I believe that The Horseman was the former king of Halloween, and Jack was his apprentice at the time. The Horseman gave Jack a bunch of war trivia and knowledge that Jack used later on in his life as the king.

Though I do respect your theory it doesn't really make sense I mean in the begging of movie when Jack came out of the well we can see that before there was a pumpkin head burning while dancing which can explain how he died (burned alive) also when he sings his solo (Jack's Lament) he says, "I'll scare you out of your pants" and he was known throughout England and France which can mean he could have been some sort of person that would scare people (I don't know the name of what that would be called back then) but that's what I think.

My theory : In the song jack sings in the beginning where he says “ to a man in Kentucky I’m mr unlucky “ which probably meant he was a man who lived in Kentucky and he had a run in with bad luck . And since he never heard of Christmas , like in this video , he was to have lived in the late 1800s , and his attire , which is a suit with what looks like a bow tie , he was maybe going to a formal event , and since he is a skeleton he may have drove there since cars were introduced in the later 1800s and somehow got into a crash , the car may have over heated or caused both to happen , which he probably set him on fire and burned him alive , and he is freakishly tall , so he may have been in a car that he could be able to fit in , which would need a certain amount of fuel , leading to him being soaked and then caught aflame , leading to his skin being burned away , eventually leading to his death, probably due to his wounds getting infected . I’m probably totally wrong , that’s just my theory .

Jack likes to scare people not kill them. And as he makes no mention of ever losing his head for an extended period I find your theory very unbelievable. They don't even have the same body types. Could it be that Jack is just quite simply Jack. Burton himself has already disclosed that "Every story has a beginning, middle and an end. But no one says you have to write them in that order.". This references Frankenweenie and Corpse Bride as being part of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Not a theory about Jack.. But about zero. Okay.... Zero was actually Sparky from Frankenweenie before he died. Then he was Scraps from corpse bride. Then of course he becomes Zero. Now my theory about Jack is that all of the dog owners from all those movies are the same person!!!! In Frankenweenie that was him as a little boy. Then he becomes Victor in corpse bride. And then Jack. I understand they all have different names but that is because once Victor got older he moved away from his friends an wanted to start over... So he changed his name to Victor. When he died he went to Halloween Town and he didn't want anyone to recognize/remember him.

There is a major problem with this. The headless horsemen takes place in sleepy hollow a town near tarrytown new york. The revolutionary war ended in 1783 and kentucky wasn't a state till 1792 almost a decade later. He couldn't have known about kentucky if he was the headless horseman because it wasn't made yet.

I think his real identity is stingy Jack. A man that like to play tricks on people and was far too stingy to help anyone but himself. He was clever though he managed to trick Satan more than once. When he finally died he was such a wicked man that heaven didn't let him in. So he went to hell and when Satan saw who it was he was so ashamed of being tricked he didn't let him in either. He did give Jack one thing a coal of hellfire which burns bright and never goes out. Jack hollowed out a turnips and put the coal into it and that's Jack's lantern. forced to travel between worlds I guess he settled in Halloween town that explains why he can't stay dead. In Ireland they used hollow out turnips and put candles in them I'm sure Satan told the other demons not to bother anyone with a burning turnip on the doorstep. naturally everyone does it who wants to be bothered by demons. And when Irish immigrants moved to America pumpkins were far easier than turnips to carve. Jack's lantern jack-o'-lantern. Maybe the o was to remind people of its Irish heritage O'Brien O'Malley O'Hickey who knows what Jack's last name really was.

I love Jack Skellington. I have wondered this too. I thought that there could be clues in "Jack's Lament". There's a line i have thought might give a clue but I have no idea what it leads to; the line is "To a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mr. Unlucky and I'm known throughtout England and France. And since I am dead i can take off my head to recite Shakespherean quotations." I have been thinking maybe Jack was some kind of performer/entertainer while human. Jack was burned death. (WARNING GORY) When a person is burned to death all the skin and muscle and everything is burned off. This leaving a skeleton. Also it shows a big red flashing signal that he was in the beginning. When he had a pumpkin head. He lit himself on fire and then proceeded to dance. Obviously jumping into the fountain in the middle of town and revealing Jack Skellington! This part happens to be my favorite. So there in a long comment that was what happened to Jack in his human life a.k.a his death. Source: “How the characters in THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS Died”

Don't confuse his anamorphic form as a condition of Jacks death. AS a spirit representation of a Holiday, the Holiday its self might determine Jacks form. True in the Movie Jack doesn't change form but I postulate that doesn't mean its not possible. Then again this is the land of make believe and everyone can believe what they want.

Nice theory but I think I have a better one The headless horse man was a pumpkin King, the first one and that's where they got the name. However if Halloween town is, like some theory's state, pergatory then when he killed icabod he finished his business and left. Then Jack became the next, Jack was the son of Victor and heard all about Pergatory or Halloween town. Then when he died he , knowing all about the town, searched for it in his after life. They needed leadership and Jack seemed to be the perfect man for the job. However Jack got so deep into Halloween that he forgot most of the other things in his life before. Only remembering what he knew about Halloween.

But I gather from your comment he gets shot in the face, could’ve been from fighting the Indians and that’s why he didn’t go to the thanksgiving one (I know they didn’t eat the turkey then yea) could’ve been french and the guillotine/British axe/sword what have you... buried with his head so there’s that one...

frankenweenie's main character is named Victor and same for Corpse Bride and the both owned dogs. In frankenweenie his dog dies and the dead dog in Corpse Bride is that dog. And in the nightmare before christmas i feel like Victor didn't want to go by Victor because he was known by the dead already and he didn't want them to because of his decision not to continue the marriage with Emily that he changed his name to Jack and from there on. I'm claiming to be right or anything it's just what I think.

Jacks Title of "Pumpkin King" could be talking about The headless Horsemans's use of a pumpkin, Or that He is truly the King of Pumpkins, and is just an ordinary farmer in Holloween town, Growing produce, and making Back handed deals with Turky town, Sneeking in a few Turkies, and bribing the mayor..... scary indeed.... But i think Jack was the headless horseman, And the towns folk gave him a gift of his head, So he could have closure, and see the things he had done to the living in spite.

Okay good theory for going into the Halloween bandwagon. But your missing a huge detail in the flim, Jack never talks about a past life, or him ever being a human. And also you suggesting that jack was human or dies around the 1870 (which 1870 is the year Christmas became a national holiday) Which also doesn't make sense because well the nightmare before Christmas takes place around 1900s. And well from the song jacks lament we hear jack has been the ruler of Halloween for a long time. Long enough for him to get bored of it. And well him dying around 1870's before Christmas was a more modern and popular holiday, and then coming to get bored around 1900s of Halloween. It doesnt really make sense. Plus jack didnt know any of the other holidays because of his confused face when seeing all the doors. And if he was human he must of known what Valentine's day was since it had been celebrated since 270 A.D which was to celebrate dead love ones. it shows how much older he is, He only went to the Christmas door because it was more decorated. And with the headless horse man, that's a huge leap of logic. Jack has never been human, he has always been been a skeleton. He had no past life.

Pretty sure NMBC was set in present day (at the time) or I could see as late as the 60's. Pretty sure there is use of modern-ish cars, computers, phones and a police force that seemed to be functioning with multiple units, radios, a dispatch, and uniforms. Police didn't get uniforms until 1853 (NY) and in 1867, the first telegraph system was used to log an officer's location with a turn key. The first police car was used in Akron, Ohio in 1910 and by 1912 paddy wagons had seen use. Home phones were still mostly a luxury for the wealthy into the 40's, up till the early 60's they still had party lines with multiple families on one box. Wasn't till the late 60's that it would have been more common for a family to have a private phone line. Also, more importantly, 911 has only been a thing for about 50 years. So based on that, I would put the films time between 1961-1991. I have no idea why I felt the need to unload that opinion, but there it is. Maybe one day one of those years will help someone on Jeopardy.

Um... Tim Burton directed a version of sleepy hollow... so... that might be more relevant. I mean, it's the same information, and obviously there are some visual clues like the statues, but doesn't it make sense that Tim Burton would want to give that backstory in his own movies? Also... WHY ARE WE ASSUMING HE WAS SUPPOSED TO GET CLOSURE FROM FINDING HIS HEAD. When you're fighting, like say, a war or something, fear is your greatest ally. It's your first defense. You can avoid a fight (which you may lose, and thus, die from) if you're just scary enough. But then he DID die, and what he was trying to do when he died he still felt a strong need to do (Tim Burton explains all this in the corpse bride, how emily desperately wants to get married, since it's what she was trying to do when she died). The problem is, these characters have a strong need to do that thing, but they have to overcome what it was that they feel the strong need to do. Because they died. It's like how people will get robbed, and then they're afraid of being alone at night or something. They have to overcome the thing they're afraid to let go of. Once they do, they have personal growth, and can move on from it. And, you know, move on. So it's not about doing what they feel they want to, it's about doing the right thing DESPITE what they feel. For emily, she really wanted to get married, but she didn't, because it wasn't the right thing ("this is wrong") and thus, grew and moved on. With Jack, it's letting go of his fear. Which is why he still hasn't moved on in the end. But it is a good step in the right direction, because he learns to respect Christmas (sets it back to rights, doesn't see it as a means to cause more fear anymore) and even starts to feel love for himself (with Sally). So love was the thing he was missing all along (they make no attempt to hide that I think) and even though he hasn't let go of fear and moved on, it's still kinda a happy ending (showing positive growth, so maybe he WILL move on later). Poof. There's that theory! Tell me what ya'll think.
@heatherbaker4538
@heatherbaker4538 6 жыл бұрын
And to those who say the new sleepy hollow doesn't fit with my theory, since the headless horseman moves on in the end, after getting his head, notice there's also a woman on his horse who he kisses. I think it's supposed to symbolize that. Otherwise it jsut seems a bit random that he kisses her, don't you think? AND HE GOES INTO A TREE. WHICH COULD BE THE HALLOWEEN TREE DONCHA THINK.

I already figured it out. Jack Skellington was born sometime before Victor & Victoria. Victor & Victoria, might have witnessed a crime and left, and had to changed their own names. Their own surname have to changed to Skellington, sometime after they both had kids of their own. One of the kids names were Jack, as in Jack Skellington. That we known, and he used to celebrate Christmas. Something went wrongfully when Jack was still young, they all couldn’t celebrate Christmas not anymore. So, Jack only remembers Halloween. If you approve my theory, please comment down. And have Burton day.

Hear me out in Sleepy Hollows Ichabod Crane was said to have been burned by a flaming pumpkin, but they never proved that Ichabod was killed. The pumpkin could have burned off his skin. But it is also said that the horseman took Ichabod back to hell with him. So maybe Ichabod when taken back to hell killed the headless horseman and then was given the option to go to Holloween Town since he was still not satisfied. So when the movie starts and it shows Jack with a pumpkin on his head maybe the straw horse he is riding is a way of mocking the headless horseman. So every year he rides the straw horse with a flaming pumpkin head as a way to get revenge. It's a stretch but you never know.

I don't think Jack is *really* dead, he's just the embodiment of Halloween. He was just... always a skeleton who always lived in Halloween Town. Also claiming Jack is the same character as someone from a completely unrelated movie is just dumb.

Theres 4 options •The skeleton pirate from james in the giant peach (possibly jack sparrow) •Headless Horseman •Ichabod Crane himself •Stingy Jack

My theory: Jack Skellington is the pirate Calico Jack. 1, Jack appears as the captain of the ghost ship James runs into in the icy waters. 2, "Calico" Jack Rackham died in 1720, before modern Christmas practices in the 19th century. 3, After Calico Jack was executed, his body was left in an iron gibbet for possibly years, his skeleton was on display for a very long time. 4, Calico clothing of the time very strongly favored stripes, which Skellington wears 5, They even have the same name lmao

Wat the end of the movie when Jack and Sally are singing Jack is falling in love with his nurse that aided him during the war. It would make sense because Sally knows how to stitch herself back together. Jack had eyes for her after some time injuries that he got during the war.

A number of people also reckon jack was a performer. Maybe he was a performer, then soldier? And Sally was a nurse present at his death? I reckon Sally might've gotten blown up or chopped up or something, as horrible as that sounds. It makes sense with her sewing herself up.

I think Jack is Ichabod Crane because they are both very, very tall. Also, when Jack enters Halloween town on the straw horse in the beginning he is dressed as the Headless Horseman!

I think this is a little too deep. I think Jack is the *idea* of death, the *idea* of a skeleton. The fact that he's dead inside doesn't mean he was ever alive. As for when Santa became a thing, I think the holiday forest is outside of time.

Actually, me and my friends came up with a theory about Jack: so, we were thinking that Jack WAS Vincent from corpse bride. Ik you might be confused but hear me out: what if after he died, he didnt remember most things from when he was alive, just the subtle details. And because he had been to the land of the dead before, maybe thats why he became Jack Skellington when he actually died. And I think that Jack loves Sally because she reminds him in a subtle way of the woman Victor married, I forgor her name. Plus, like you said, they both have a very fond thunking of dogs. And I think Victor and Jack do have many similarities making me believe my theory: they are both very slim, very cunning, and great fighters. If you think this theory may be true, please let me know. I wanna see if anyone agrees with me.

You seem to be overlooking Captain Jack Sparrows (Pirates of the Carribean). Not only do they both have the same first name (Jack) - but if you watch JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH (which like both movies is from Disney, and which like NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS is from Tim Burton) there is a scene in which you see what appears to be an intermediate, transitional state between the two. It was that scene that convinced me of Jack Skellington’s identity.

I personally thought Jack was the victor from frankenweenie this is why In the movie Jack was doing experiments to try to find out what was the meaning of Christmas and victor was doing experiments to bring is dog back from the dead as in the movie he was known as the science genus And zero has a shining nose and in frankenweenie lighting bought back sparky back alive if it was the same dog then the lighting might have caused his nose to shine And in nightmare before Christmas Jack is surrounded by monsters as in frankenweenie victor accidentally made a monster while doing the experiment again and 4 other monsters were made not by him though but from other classmates that found out what he was doing Jack had sang “I am Mr unlucky” well victor was in a near death situation while trying to save sparky again Last one victor has a slight resemblance to Jack skeleton I mean even in the afterlife he is wearing the same pants and his face structure is the same as jack

Not necessarily true: he could have amnesia about his life, which is a common trope in movies

That's what I thought too. Also, being that he's so theatrical, could he have been an actor, performer or a director? He also gives me eccentric rich man vibes.

when the monsters were singing in the song and jack set himself on fire couldn’t that be alluding to the fact that maybe jack was burned alive ?

I think Jack is the original Jack O' The lantern. ( FYI INFO CAME FROM JON SOLOS CHANNEL) An Irish folktale about the origin of Jack O'lanturns. Basically he was a horrible person who wasn't allowed in heaven, but tricked the devil into not collecting his soul when he died. So he was cursed to wander the earth with a lantern carved from a turnip to light his way. Over time the turnip turned a pumpkin because people found them easier to carve. It explains why he has a pumpkin on his head in the beginning, and implies that Halloween town is purgatory.

I've heard that frankenwieenie was when he where a child, the corpse bride when he where an adult, and then here comes the afterelife, the nightmare before christmas. I think.

i personally think the pumpkin king has always been. he doesnt know about christmas because he doesnt venture into the mortal world for more than hallows eve. so he doesnt see the traditions of any other holidays. they dont know what the easter bunny is either.

I like the theory with the headless horsemen and to link onto it . At the start of the film whilst the citizens of halloween town are singing, we can see jack in his pumpkin form is riding a horse and the headless horsemen does have a pumpkin head and rides a horse 🤯
