As someone who mainly follows the Tonys, I think is wild how the Olivier don't seem to be transparent at all with the eligibility, sorting what falls into which category, how many nominees per slot, etc. The Tonys appear much more diligent in communicating with the public. Totally can see a scandal happening anytime someone looks too deep into it just like what's happening with the Nebula Awards in the Book world

For me, though I will admit I am very biased as a big fan of the show, I was shocked Claire-Marie Hall was the only one of Operation Mincemeat's actors to be left out of the acting categories, thrilled for both David Cumming and Zoe Roberts that they got in but no one can say that Claire-Marie does not also deliver an absolutely stunning performance in that show and is also absolutely worthy of a nomination-tbh, the whole leading/supporting thing doesn't really work for a show like Operation Mincemeat because it's such an ensemble driven piece but since there's not a Best Ensemble Award, it does seem like somewhat of an omission that the whole cast got nominated except for her. I was also very surprised by the omission of Jamie Parker in Best Actor because he was incredible in Next To Normal and again there doesn't seem to be an obvious reason why they would nominate the other three and not them. Was also surprised not to see either Melanie LaBarrie or Gloria Ontiri for Hadestown because they were the standouts of that show for me and definitely deserved it. I was also expecting The Witches to at least get something for set and costumes because they were stunning and I was quite disappointed that most of the set design noms were actually for video design because I feel like a lot of really great sets got missed. And yes it was super disappointing not to see any female directors in the Best Director category, and I also echo the sentiments about Nicholas Hytner, Guys and Dolls at the Bridge has so many moving parts which must have been so challenging to co-ordinate so I'm surprised he didn't get a nod there. I'm not super surprised that Doubtfire didn't get any nominations as a show, but Gabriel Vick was so incredible as the lead that it does seem like an omission that he didn't get an acting nod. I hope Sam Tutty gets one next year for Two Strangers after the West End transfer because he would definitely deserve it-as would Dujonna Gift!

While I don’t think the Tony nomination categories are perfect, I do appreciate the splitting up of musicals and plays for performances and creative categories. I feel for those missing out on the recognition for their wonderful work in the UK.

I’m actually really interested in the technicality of if Accidental Death of An Anarchist counts as a revival - because it’s not just a reimagined staging, it’s a newly English-translation version that drastically updates the setting from 1970s Italy to modern day London and also includes a whole new meta-theme about the Met police. When does a play count as a revival if it’s revival that is essentially a new adaptation? That’s hypothetical btw it’s just really interesting

I still cannot believe Hadestown was marked a revival. Probably the biggest shocker for me. Nicolas Hytner in my opinion was robbed of best director. You and me can agree on this one that Kyle Ramar Freeman should’ve been nominated! But I’m still happy about these nods, especially for Mincemeat!

I think Johnny Flynn deserves it so much more than Tennent. As much as I appreciate these stunning performances from stars like Tennent in Shakespearean plays, it's nothing new. It's hardly a revelation that Tennent can brilliantly play Macbeth. He's been brilliant and awarded for Hamlet, Richard 3rd and any number of these roles. Compared then to a nuanced, subtle, meta performance of Flynn playing a man, playing Hamlet, surely THAT is the more complex performance? Surely we should be rewarding newer plays and newer perfomers, like Tuppance Middleton and Flynn who have not been awarded these acolaids before, rather than continuously celebrating people who we already know are excellent and who probably didnt have to dig that deep to play Macbeth....again....and this isn't to say I don't love Gatis and Tennent et al. I just think they wouldn't benefit as much from these awards and I want new talent celebrated and highlighted.

What would it take to get five nominations in the musical acting categories? Why aren’t categories open to both plays and musicals given 5 automatically? Would Hadestown have been eligible for creative categories since it was considered a revival?

Absolutely outstanding performance, also the ONLY actor of the entire 5-person cast not to get nominated for anything (Natasha Hodgson nominated for Best Actress in a Musical, David Cumming for Best Actor in a Musical, Jak Malone for Best Supporting Actor, Zoe Roberts for Best Supporting actress). Huge missed opportunity to complete the set

I went to see Just One More Day yesterday (good grief getting a pair of tickets is difficult) 13 year old daughter and myself had a great time. We also saw Great British Bake Off Musical (twice!)….both I thought were good enough for Entertainment category….plus Craige Els does a very good Geldof (from someone old enough to have witnessed the event)……plus Crazy for You not nominated for musical or revival….complete bonkers ! Again saw in twice including driving down from Manchester on New Years Eve to see last ahow

Im going to be controversial yet brave. I personally think Grace Mouat deserves more recognition for her performance in bake off. I love the show but i personally think she carried it with her incredible vocals and amazing acting performance.

The fact that Ain’t Too Proud and Tosh Wanogho-Maud got nothing is a travesty. They really need to explain why musicals get fewer nominations to plays. Thought it was extremely weird for Sunset Boulevard to get nominated for Set Design.

I'm going to join the chorus of people saying it's not right that 4 out the 5 cast members of operation mincemeat get acting nominations but Claire didn't when she is just as deserving. Though it is very on theme for her character in the show. Also I think it's a shame that a Little Life didn't get a best new play nomination as that cast deserve recognition for the fact all 8 of them did every performance 8 shows a week for 18 weeks (1 in richmond, 12 in pinter, 5 in savoy). I felt emotionally drained from 1 performance, how on earth the 8 of them got through it I don't know. Glad to see acting nods for 3 of them at least, very well deserved.

unfortunately i dont know about non-shakespeare, but this was a particularly bad year for shakespeare plays, david tennant was good, but both kenneth branaughs and ralph feinnes macbeth were awful. there was also just less shakespeare this year, the incredible king lear at the almeida is just about ineligible
