I always thought how selfless the entire crew was, including the musicians. But delaying the sinking to keeping the lights on. All are hero's.

Hey, ahoy there again, Sam! I agree that the men in the boiler rooms were the biggest heroes of the disaster. They had to have realized that to stay so far down in the ship meant there was an excellent chance of their dying and yet they chose to stay and do what they could. May their sacrifice never be forgotten. As for the Lego Titanic model, I say go for it!

@@ilikeships1704 I watched a documentary about the heroic efforts of the electrical engineers who performed miracle after miracle to keep the lights on till almost the very end. And a mystery they discussed, who was correcting the list of the ship? A group of unremembered men were constantly trimming the ship right to the end.

Really annoys me that, we know all about Guggenheim and the Countess and Astor and the very young Mrs Astor. Which, yes, all of them have stories. But I do wish history would remember the names of every one of those men who KNEW they were going to die but stayed in place doing all they could to keep Titanic afloat….so that Astor, Guggenheim and co could die or be rescued in a much more opulent manner.

And it was a sacrifice. They did everything they could to buy time for the Titanic's passengers. Remember that the next time you take a cruise, folks. There is a team down below, working to run the ship and seeing to it's safe operation. You'll rarely see them topside.

@@sl2547 Anyone who is a student of the disaster knows their names. Walter Lord's book "A Night To Remember" immortalized their sacrifice. "Elitism" has nothing to do with it. Their story did not come out until well after the disaster, while the stories of many survivors were available when the Carpathia brought the survivors into New York and before the crowds of reporters. They were simply two among many.

I always thought it was the postal workers in post room that died first since they were last scene, fairly early on in the sinking, trying to get as much mail away from the water as possible.

I don't know what happened but I'd assume dragging bags of mail out of the cargo holds while the compartment slowly filled up wouldn't cause them to drown, unless something really unfortunate happened. The water would've had to gush in really fast to overwhelm them, which it didn't

They abandoned the mail room when it became apparent they couldn't save any mail. They worked their best, but eventually were unable to move the mailbags any further up. They actually sat on the steps of a ladder with a couple of passengers, discussing the situation as they watched the bags floating in the deck below. They were also seen on the Boat Deck, later on.

I may not comment much but i've seen your videos on titanic, Olympic as well as other ships, especially the queen mary. It was amazing seeing your channel jump from 5K to over 50K this year. To admit you couldn’t spell to save your life and then to somehow “Normalise” it, I find utterly baffling and abhorrent! No wonder youth unemployment is so high. When someone like a potential Employer looks through CV’s, for candidates to invite for interview, all the ones with Grammatical errors and Spelling Mistakes get thrown out, in preference for the ones that Don’t! Just have a think about that!!

Just to clarify: 1500 people were not trapped in the ship when it sank. They were aboard the ship. Many of them simply floated away after the ship sank. They died a few minutes later from hypothermia due to the water being 28 degrees F.

He was pulled out of the water, but the exposure to the cold was too much for him and before the night was over, Phillips was dead. As I recall, his body was never recovered.

I used to be OBSESSED with early 20th century ocean liners when I was a kid - there was even a point I had the entire floor plan of the Titanic memorized. I grew out of it though but am now experiencing a resurgence since I recently rewatched Titanic and am hyped for the Lego set. Just found your channel and it's amazing! Love your content! Get the set! It'd be interesting to see you do a detailed breakdown on the accuracy of it, the exterior and interior

Those who are delaying the sinking has got to have recognition other than the more famous passengers and crew (I feel that the wireless operators needs more love and attention too. Yes I've watched The Last Signals). I've known of their exploits from the documentary Saving the Titanic. Really great since it focuses on the crew down at the boiler rooms and engine room; they are the stars and among the heroes.

I have a suggestion for a video for you. When I was in high school, I had to do a paper on a historical event and how that event changed the world. I picked the Titanic for my event and while I was researching for the paper, I was surprised to learn that just how much radio law was affected by the Titanic’s sinking. I guess it really peaked my interest because I was a fairly active ham radio operator at the time (still licensed currently, but I’m not active, not enough time in the day anymore), and because I was already interested in the Titanic. Anyway, thought it might make an interesting video in the future. Love your content, keep up the good work!

There is another group of crewmembers who died early in the night. This is not normally mentioned too heavily but at some point one of the officers, (Lightoller I believe) sent the ships master-at-arms below with some of his sailors to open two of the heavy gangway doors some decks below to possibly load lifeboats from there closer to the water than from the davits. He left with his crew and was never seen or heard from again. The story goes that "apparently" they got caught below in some sudden inrush of water and they all died. In modern times, one of the explorations of the Titanic found that the gangway doors WERE found to be open. So, apparently, the Master-at-arms and his crew DID manage to do their job but died somewhere along the way afterwards. This story is not talked about much but I have seen it mentioned a few times. This, then, would have been some of those who died early in the night. A slight problem with trying to determine who died when is that some of the more recent movies have shown dramatic scenes of people staying (and drowning) in their cabins. So many of these portrayals, while dramatic, don't seem to have any reality to them aside from trying to make a dynamic point. (Titanic 1997) showed this several times for a dramatic effect and truly it was more gruesome than helpful. (Example: ) The Straus's lying in their flooding bedroom holding each other tightly is pure idiocy. They were last seen, first along the boat deck railing and finally, to anybody's notice, they were seen huddled inboard by one of the bulkheads. They were never seen returning to their cabins. Another phony thing was the dead body of a young woman in a flimsy nightgown floating near the ceiling of the First Class Lounge. This kind of thing is, to me, cheap and a bit creepy and should not have been included in the movie.

I've wondered about this and ended at the same conclusion although it seems bizarre that so much of the ship could be flooded without anyone dying up to that point. On a related note, I've also wondered if the sinking could have been delayed had Barrett not closed the coal bunker door and instead they had attempted to pump the compartment's flooding as a whole instead of allowing the water to build up until the door (presumably) failed. I seem to remember that they had things reasonably stable until that point. Particularly as the water coming into the bunker was described as having the nature of that from an ordinary firehose- which should have been controllable until the flooding elsewhere made things worse. This isn't to suggest that it wasn't entirely reasonable or natural for Barrett to close the bunker door in response to seeing water entering there.

I mean, I know the Cameron movie is historically not accurate in many places, but it does imply the possibility that people might have died in the cargo section immediately after impact. In the movie, the car where Jack and Kate had sex shortly before the ship struck the ice berg was destroyed in the initial moments of the disaster. Jack, Kate, and the two guys who were searching for them and had been in the cargo area would have died if the berg had been struck half an hour earlier. I don't know if these sections were accessible, as they are presented to be in the movie, but if they were then we can't rule out that someone died down there.

What if instead of breaching water tight bulkheads no.1-6 it would have breached no. 3-8, 4-9 or 5-10, how would it have sunk and would they have had more time?

The ship would have sunk, but instead of going down bow first then splitting into four pieces, Titanic would have lost all electrical power then capsized. And in any case, she would have sunk far faster and quite likely very few people would have survived. A capsizing ship makes launching the lifeboats impossible, and the lethal cold of the waters where she sank killed people within minutes. In an ironic way, the collision and sinking scenario gave the crew and passengers more time than the others.

As someone terribly afraid of drowning or otherwise suffocating to death, the engineers amaze me. How brave they were! To face that fate in order to keep the electricity going and save others is the best of human nature. As the daughter of a merchant marine engineer much like these men, I'm so proud of them and so glad my father never faced a similar fate. As for the Lego model, if you can afford it then I say go for it! That would be so cool to see in future videos.

They were amazing! My dad worked his way up to become a ships captain and I remember hearing about captains going down with their ship And being horrified. Luckily like your father, he’s never been in that situation and these days hopefully isn’t needed

Interesting topic that I've never thought about. Thanks for a great video that asks and answers that question. And for bringing more light to the men in the boiler rooms. I totally agree with you - the engineers, firemen, and others who sacrificed their lives trying to keep the ship afloat as long as possible (and in Harvey's case, to attempt to rescue a fallen comrade) are the most heroic and inspiring people to me of the Titanic disaster. I don't think I'll be purchasing the Lego Titanic, myself. So I'd absolutely love to see someone showing it off, and there's nobody I'd rather see doing so than you! Please - do it! :-)

My mind went back to your earlier videos where I’d give minor corrections from obscure sources. Yet I think this is the first video that talks about this specific topic, so I will probably direct others to this video when it is asked. Yet at the same time I feel as though I nitpicked everything. This video is flawless. And now I understand what an access hatch is; for some reason, the closest I had to a mental image was the “doorframe” of the watertight doors. And that thumbnail is amazing to look at. I think I saw it on DeviantArt some time ago, and seeing it again is wonderful. On a final note, is it possible that down the line that a video could be done on _Titanic_ survivors who ultimately met their fates in subsequent shipwrecks? I don’t remember anyone doing something like this in video format, and it would give perspective that, despite surviving the _Titanic_ disaster, some of the survivors would succumb to early deaths anyway, sometimes in ways even _more_ tragic than the _Titanic._ With regards, Daniel

That's a good story. I'm a new sub. Always have liked the titanic and stories about it and stories about the people. You do a great job in telling the stories and like this one how many people sacrificed their lives to keep the ship afloat just a little longer so more people had time to get off and survive. R.I.P. to those people that did all they could to help all those people who ended up surviving.

Thank you for the video. At first, I was thinking they knew they were going to die whether they were topside or not, but then hearing you explain how many may have thought they had a chance at survival after the actual sinking makes sense and changed my mind. The entire crew was brave, but these men had to be the most brave and selfless.

Great video, Sam. I am glad that you researched the issue of TITANIC'S first heroes/victims. For years, I heard that the mailroom staff died first; while trying to move the mail bags. Now, I see that this information was wrong. Thanks for setting us straight.😄

Time comes when it seems fit. Oddly enough, my brother and I were just talking about the Lego Titanic. It would be a great build. Related to that, back in the 90's I worked for Toys R Us, and the manager asked me to build one of the Titanic 3-D puzzle kits so it could be used as a display.

I remember watching a documentary from the 90's or late 80's while being a very young kid talking about how the mailmen were the first know people to die on the ship because they got trapped while trying to save the mail. It's funny how opinions differ from time to time

That was a really interesting video, Sam. I never heard of the second man before but I have of Jonathan Shepherd. His story was a tragic one and to hear about how he lost his life was truly heartbreaking, and I bet it must’ve been the same for his family.

Do you know if they recovered the marconi wireless system this past summer? I know they were supposed to, but I also know that there was some controversy about recovering it. I haven't heard anything about it, was just wondering if you have? Thanks

Take the plunge! You can use it and your other model. The other model you use can cover events while it was whole, the Lego one can separate to show events after breakup or for cross sections, or even post sinking displays

I just watched a dramatisation of this yesterday. It showed all of that happening, the guy breaking his leg, the other guy going back for him just as the water rushed in, and Barratt just climbing up the ladder at the last minute. I don't know how true this part is but in the film Barratt had been made to work two double shifts for fighting. The officer who made him do it ended up giving him a letter to give to his son coz he knew he wasn't getting off the ship. Barratt survived but it didn't show you how he survived. There was another guy, am Irish one who they called Paddy, and he survived too, or at least in the film but I imagine they kept it true to life because they showed photos and the names of the ones who didn't make it at the end of just as the credits rolled. I watched it on here, it was called The forgotten Heroes Of Titanic or something like that.
