In this wrestling documentary we look at why 2000 is often considered to be the greatest year in WWE history. While WCW was burning, WWE / WWF reached its zenith as wrestling went mainstream thanks to The Rock, Triple H, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle and so many others. Stone Cold Steve Austin even returned at the end of the year, and WWE went on a run of their greatest ever pay per view events. The wrestling was great, the storylines were great, and the superstars themselves were better than ever in the year 2000.

Kurt Angle is one of the most natural professional wrestlers I have ever seen in 30 years as a fan. I groaned when I initially heard that they signed him, but he figured it out almost instantly. He just got it, and became one of the most entertaining and skilled in ring performers on the roster much more quickly than anyone could have expected him to. Other than MJF, I can't think of anyone who took to the business as quickly as Angle did.

2000 was an amazing year. The Rock was my fav at the time, but they took too long to give him the title. Regardless from 98 to 2008-ish, WWE was incredible. There were so many amazing talents in compelling story lines. My fav moment was Hogan/Rock at Mania, the crowd was insane. I was there in Toronto, and we couldn't get enough of the Hulkster. As a little kid on the mid 80's, Hogan was one of my heroes, so despite loving the Rock, I couldn't help but cheer for Hogan. I wish he kept his Hollywood look though, even as a face.

Top 5 would most likely be 2000, 2002, 2003, 1999, 2004. You have to factor WCW into the equation because they were part of the wrestling world and making an impact even when the wheels were beginning to fall off it was still very interesting and also those stars that would end up making the transition to WWE shortly after, made a huge impact on the WWE adding the likes of Hogan, Nash, Flair, Goldberg, Steiner, Booker.
@DagestanderGustaffuson
@DagestanderGustaffuson Жыл бұрын
@@Ballout60s I completely agree with that list. But I’d argue that they botched the WM main event by not having Rock complete the year victorious at WM and also having a fatal four way when it should’ve been Rock and Triple H mono e mono because although it was Rock’s year, Triple H was right there with him and their feud had been one of the all time incredible feuds ever and they messed it up even more by adding big show and especially mankind who was supposed to be retired. That’s my only gripe with the year. Other than that, it was splendid even without someone the likes of Austin.

A Good Comparison Is WCW 1998 & WWE 2000. WWE Roster In The Attitude Era Was Best In 1999. And 1997-1998 Didn't Have That Much Shitty Edgy. Most Of The Sh!tty Storylines Were In 1999. The Second Hlaf Of 1998 Had 4-DX Black Faces, Hawk Tries To Commit Suicide, I Choppy Pee Pee And Beaver Cleavage Chaz. WWE In 2000 Had The Least Built Heavyweights Than Any Year In Their History Up Until That Point. Most Of Time The Rock, Triple H, Kane, Kurt Angle,Hardcore Holly, Faarooq, Test, Steve Blackman & Bull Buchanan. Steve Austin & Billy Gunn Were Absent Most Of 2000. The British Bulldog Left In The Late Spring. WCW 1998 Seems A Lot More Memorable Than WWE 2000. The McMahonHelmsleyFaction Was So Overrated. The FactionNew Blood Was Far Superior. The Problem Was Vince Russo Pushing Billy Kidman & Vampiro Instead Of Scott Steiner And Demon. And He Taking Many Top Stars Off Television Ric Flair, DDP, Sid Vicious, Lex Luger & Firing Hulk Hogan. And Mike Awesome Who Was A Main Eventer And Filled A Void With Scott Hall Absent, Vincr Russo Putting Him In The Midcard. It's Like Vince Russo Said The WWE Has 9 Built Muscular Heavyweights At This Time So IfI Tale Lex Luger, Sid Vicious & Hulk Hogan Off TV, WCW Will Still Have More Built Heavyweights Than The WWE, & It Won't Hurt The Company. WCW Had More, But Russo Should've Wanted To DOMINATE WWE Not Just Beat McMahon. WWE In 1997 Had More Built Heavyweights Than In 2000. Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Late 1997 Kane, Early 97 Psycho, Steve Austin, British Bulldog, Owen Hart, Ken Shamrock, L OD, Faarooq, Bobby Holly, Billy Gunn, Late 1997 Jeff Jarrett, Littoe While FAKEs Diesel & Razor Ramon, Bart Gunn & Dan Severn. WCW In November & December 1998 Was Better Than The WWE In July(Feuds-Thriple H vs Chris Jericho, The Rock vs Chris Benoit & The Undertaker vs Kurt Angle). & September/October 2000(The Rock vs Kurt Angle,, Triple H vs Chris Benoit & Austin vs Rikishi). 1997 Is More Favored Over 2000.

I was in middle school ar the height of my wrestling fandom and me and my older brother pooled money together to order the PPV and have friends over to watch. Mic Foley. The Hardy Boys (mostly because of teenage crush on Lita), and Jericho were my favorites. I remember the main event being a let down, but that three way and the TLC tag team match delivered. I feel like 2000 is when the company got to enjoy the benefits of the work they put in the prior years. 98-99 were more raw and explosive but they were in a fight with WCW to prove they were more wild and cutting edge. By 2000, the roster was heaving with talent from top to bottom who connected with the audience, which was crucial without Austin. The competition for the World, Inter. and Tag titles had never been more stacked, the European title gave the spotlight to Eddie Guerrero, Regal, Al Snow, while the Hardcore title had its best run, making stars of Crash and Steve Blackman especially. The year felt slicker and more fun, after a rather dark 1999. Vince sodding off for a while helped aswell. Foley as Commish kept the happy goofy image going. The return of Austin made things kind of serious again, I'm glad they tried an angle with Rikishi, he was having knee problems and benefitted from the main event paycheck while he could get it, maybe getting squashed by Austin wasn't the best way. Maybe he could have just had own his thing with Rock, as Triple H was the obvious villain for Austin.

00 definitely enjoyed the benefits of the year prior, which is why the WWF started the year with strong ratings. By the end of the year, however, they were losing steam which is why ratings right from the beginning of 01 were weak. 00 may have been thr peak for the WWF but it was also when it started to decline. I'd say they were overall hotter in 99 while the wrestling business as a whole was hotter in 98

Great year for wwf but I must admit, as a teenager at wrestlemania 2000 in Anaheim, I was disappointed at the mediocre ppv. The ladder match was by far the best live match. That match is underrated too. Everyone talks about the subsequent TLC matches but that WM2000 ladder match was legit.

I believe the original plan for wrestlemania 2000 was rock vs triple h 1 v 1 and stone cold returning to help rock beat triple h, but apparently austin wasnt ready to come back yet so somehow it ended up as a fatal 4 way, and then the original plan happened at the following ppv backlash.

The reason we got that 4 way main event at Mania & Trips retaining the Title was because The Rock botched his Rumble Win. The original plan was for Trips & Rock to main event Mania & Rock winning but because the botch was so clear and unavoidable plans had to be scrapped to give Big Show some fair justice

The WM2000 main event wasn’t because they were thrown in for Austin’s absence, it was an audible call made because of the mistake made at Royal Rumble when Rocks feet had accidentally touched the ground and was caught doing so. At that time, something like that couldn’t be ignored like it’s been nowadays

I believe 1998-1999 was the 2 greatest years- -Ministry Of Darkness -The Brood -Austin vs Mr. McMahon feud -Beer truck segment -Hospital segment -DX Army invades WCW -Austin vs HBK @ WM 14 (w/ Mike Tyson) -Austin vs The Rock @ WM 15 -Undertaker vs Mankind: Hell In A Cell -The Rock vs Mankind: I Quit Match 2000 was too focused on Triple H becoming "The Game" & all about him & Stephanie. DX broke up. The Brood broke up. Ministry Of Darkness broke up. HBK was injured, Stone Cold was injured, and the Monday Night Wars were coming to an end. 💯

1998 was really good I agree on that. But 2000 wwf was miles better than the second half of 1999. 1998 and 2000 was two great years. And 1999 was worst except the first half.
@blueblur2273
@blueblur2273 7 ай бұрын
Completely agree! Creative was better in 98-99 because everyone had their own story to be invested in. They went away from that in 00. Also, the roster was hotter in 99 as practically everyone was using their hottest gimmick and at their most over. By 00, a lot of wrestlers began cooling off either because they changed their gimmicks or utilized them incorrectly. Thats partially why the WWF started cooling off later in the year. I'd say the wrestling industry as a whole was at its hottest in 98 when both companies were red hot.

Anywhere between Oct 98 to WM17 was good. Quality wrestlers, best storylines, everyone had a purpose there wasn’t a lot of fillers. You had guys like Rock and Austin competing on Sunday Night Heat. Best time to watch wrestling. I actually started watching Raw from the night after WM14, and I am up to King Of The Ring 2000, been brilliant. But I know what’s coming after WM17.
