@@dotmerah6713 James mentioned he attended international schools in Taiwan. Hence, his entire education was in English, which pretty much makes him a native speaker. As a person who attended an international school myself, it is common that one's English would be even been better than his or her mother tongue.

Likewise, he must have been very much pressured to find a higher paying job since his parents must have paid over ten times the amount of tuition to attend international school in Taiwan compared to local students whose parents are paying pennies for their education. The ones that are hitting the jackpot are those who went to Taiwanese public schools and still scored high in SATs.

The word ‘quay’ means a long stone platform along a river where boats load and unload their goods. Usually a godown or warehouse is located next to it. If you check the dictionary, it’s really pronounced as ‘key’. So it’s not a Singaporean way of pronouncing it. I learned to pronounce this word when I was in primary school back in 1970s. The word ‘quay’ was in the vocabulary list that my teacher had written for our weekly spelling test.

@@tonymoly8739 read carefully. He is not suggesting it is a uniquely Singaporean way of pronunciation. He is implying that non-English speakers tend to mispronounce it, and gradually learn to pronounce it correctly simply through living here and interacting with locals and listening to MRT announcements.

As a fellow Singaporean, I can say Ghibil is not wrong. A degree graduate will mostly get paid between 2k to 3k per month where a few lucky and top scorers maybe even higher, closer to 3.2k. The range is widely affected by the company you are in and also the different industry demands. Whereas of now finance, healthcare and education industries are the ones in demand and thus they will get paid more than the usual.

@DEEGEED

Martin G I think it may be restricted to certain agencies and what you do. I certainly wasn’t paid 5k and neither was my friend who was a first class honours grad. If you really want money go to banking/consulting. It’s tough but at least you’re remunerated well. It’s well known that if you want to make money, don’t work in the government sector. Government is pro-family. Average salary, good hours (again it depends on which agency you’re in).

It is very interesting to know that a Taiwanese feels it is easy to fit into Singaporean society. I actually feel the same way in the other direction and felt pretty at home when visiting Taiwan. It helps that the majority of Singaporean Chinese are also Hokkien (Fujianese/Minnanese), the same cultural root for most Taiwanese, hence there is more similarity in cuisine, place names (eg: Ang Mo Kio) and even people's names (eg: Tan Ah Heng)

@@soc7052 huh? The Cantonese are the third biggest group in both Singapore and Malaysia. In Singapore, the three biggest groups are: Hokkien (43.5%), Teochew (21.9%) and Cantonese (15.9%). In Malaysia, it is Hokkien (32.4%), Hakka (22.1%) and Cantonese (19.8%). Most of the Cantonese speakers don't even come from HK, and neither were they brought over by the British. They mostly came from across Guangdong province, and the migration from southern China to Southeast Asia has happened for hundreds of years long before Britain even realised this region existed. They arrived in larger numbers when Southeast Asia become more prosperous and China underwent upheaval by their own accord, and certainly not due to the British.
@huaiwei
@huaiwei 4 жыл бұрын
@@soc7052 I am absolutely laughing at the incredible bullshit which I am reading. Pray tell, where are you from, and what is your connection with Malaysia? I hope for heaven's sake that you are not Malaysian. And if you are some foreigner who has lived in Malaysia and claim you know it well based on that, then what a poor guest you are. You are probably not hosted very well. lol Why should I waste my time discussing facts with you, when the *only* reason for you disregarding the numbers I posted was because it came from Wikipedia, nevermind that those numbers were actually from a 1970 national census cited from an academic paper (census numbers are a lie too?). Read further in that paragraph, it says that Hokkiens are still the dominant group today. So what counter sources are you showing to prove your case? Zilch. Just because the Cantonese-speaking peoples dominate in the capital region, hence dominating the airwaves and television and resulting in an outsized cultural influence, does not make them the dominant group, or worse, the "only group" as you dared claim. The Hokkien-speaking peoples dominate in the other two prosperous regions in Malaysia, namely Penang in the north and Johor in the south. I, being Singaporean, has plenty of interactions with Malaysia and Malaysians, and have conversed and worked with them over the years to know what the dominant language actually is in various Malaysian cities and states. What do you know? Finally what kind of sloppy piecemeal reconstruction of migration history is that? Are you claiming non-Cantonese speakers did not migrate to Peninsular Malaysia? Are you claiming the Chinese in East Malaysia are all assimilated and stopped speaking their native tongues? And how are these random pieces of imagined history supposed to support your theory that " the Chinese in Malaysia are Cantonese speaking due to the British brought them over from Hong Kong area."? Once again, I hope for your own sake that you are not Malaysian. What a complete embarrassment of a Malaysian you will be then. It is about as intelligent as you having only watched HK martial arts movies, and then claiming Cantonese is the dominant language in China.....and trying to convince a Chinese of this alternative and hilariously simplistic image of his own region or country.

@@huaiwei Chinese immigrants were not “literally” brought over to Southeast Asia the way the enslaved Africans were brought over to the US, South America, Caribbean in ships but it was only because of the colonization by the British and Dutch, which developed Malay archipelago and Indonesia, there was a need for labor that’s why the opportunities were created for the Chinese immigrants to go over. There were a small number of Chinese who went before colonization, in those early days and those small numbers later became the Peranakan community. Obviously we all know this community is a minority and most of the Chinese immigrants were later immigrants. By the way stop going around calling yourself “Chinese”.

We as Singaporeans, always like to experience the greens in other countries. Technically, we find ourselves been paid at the moderate rate and expats do get paid more when they are in Singapore. Do you agree Ghib?

One point to note, if you rent a studio apartment in Singapore, it will be at least S$1,500 -$2000. That's also >1/3 of your salary. How locals get by is living with their parents or getting public housing once they get married. Foreigner will share apartments or even share rooms.

Yes, I was in Taipei and find that food is just slightly cheaper, but metro fare prob about the same. And hostel bunk bed rates quite expensive actually. A decent one is easily over S$30 vs China's about S$10 to S$15 per night even in places like Shanghai.
