I grew up with a compromised immune system due to medications I was on for my autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis. It was hard being put on antibiotics for every little thing and not having a choice due to my body not fighting for itself. I took a slew of supplements and probiotics to combat that, but it feels like with a chronic condition you can really fall down a hole of medication after another to treat all the side effects of what you have to take in the first place. I feel for anyone who has to deal with chronic bodily issues, it’s a never ending battle with everything you do.

@Lalairocks

@@XenoTravisIt does not really work like that. The choice is highly dependant on the patient's condition. Let's say you have an iron disregulation due to a lack of copper balance because lover is sñuggish, the choice of approach would be significantly different from the one with a person whose snips (genetic changes ) make their body inable to get enough vit D

@@XenoTravis They know plenty, they just don't irresponsibly dish out anecdotes and hearsay which is what you and most people actually want to hear. Which they also know by the way, and is why they'll usually give you vague non-answers and generally encourage you to take them if you want to because they know even if the supplements you take have no demonstrated effect, you'll probably still feel better just because you took something you believed did something. The supplement industry is largely a scam that exploits ignorance and stupidity, which doctors also know, and is why they generally don't 'prescribe' supplements outside of deficiencies.

I recently got checked for an injury that was infected. My doctor knows I am a retired nurse and he gave me a prescription for an antibiotic saying that I’m qualified to decide if I need it. I followed the treatment plan and the infection was controlled by my immune system. I never filled the prescription. Maybe the infection would have cleared a day or two sooner if I had taken the medication, but what would it have left me with?

I remember seeing antibiotics being sold by little non pharmacy shops in Mexico when I was travelling around the Yucatan in the 80s. Quite shocked me coming from the UK, where a prescription is always needed for antibiotics and it's highly regulated. Part of me was horrified at the potential for multi resistance, but I also had to spare a thought for the locals who had no access or couldn't afford medical treatment. For them, they had little choice and probably thought this was a life saver, never knowing anything about the risks they were taking with antibiotic resistance.

I suffered with chronic sinus infections and couldn't get the needed surgery. I took so many antibiotics over such a long period that I now have a pseudomonas infection that's resistant to everything. 12 weeks of IV antibiotics made me very sick but didn't eradicate the infection. I manage it with sinus rinse and am improving my immune function. I'm a case study for how bacteria gets resistant.
@livephysiology

This has also led to some physicians questioning the idea of prescribing precautionary antibiotics, such as after a minor surgical procedure. The thinking is, it may be better to take the risk that an infection won't develop than to risk that if an uninfected takes the antibiotic, it will only make antibiotic resistance worse.

amoxicillin pills usually also contain clavulanic acid, a beta lactamase inhibitor: it inhibits the mechanism some bacteria have "found out" to prevent amoxicillin from working. Of course, it doesn't work for all bacteria, but amoxicillin+clavulanic acid currently covers, like, three quarters of bacterial infections.

I take issue with the title of this video including "and should you take them?" I interpret this as asking the patient if they should decide against taking antibiotics, which is not something a patient should ever decide themselves. If antibiotics are prescribed, they must be taken. Doctors are fully aware of the possibility for antibiotic resistance and this is included in their mental triage. If a doctor prescribes a seemingly unnecessary antibiotic, ask the doctor for their explanation. I had what I believed was a simple skin infection and the doctor gave me two sets of powerful antibiotics on an aggressive regimen. I asked the doctor about it and her reason was solid: that particular infection in that particular area of the body is most commonly an aggressive strain that must be "nuked from orbit" (as a friend put it), hence the aggressive dose. Please do not present patients with the option to avoid antibiotics. This decision is for the provider to make. When they're indicated, they're necessary.

Ugh, I’m so jealous reading through these comments of people who have only needed antibiotics a time or two. I’ve literally had so many UTIs since my spinal cord injury over 25 years ago, that I stopped counting (at the start, I had more than a dozen in one year and my personal best without one was 13 months). Even with newer, non-antibiotic preventative medications, I still usually end up with one or two per year, so my urologist and I worry a lot about resistance (and side effects) because I end up on Cipro for them since I don’t react well to nitrofurantoin.

What does the urinary tract have to do with the spinal cord?
@AVisionInFur
@AVisionInFur 6 ай бұрын
@@bedgegog In a word, everything. Your central nervous system controls pretty much everything. If your central and peripheral nervous systems can’t communicate properly, your body (any and every part impacted by the poor communication) doesn’t work properly because neither knows what’s happening to be able to intervene. So many people only think of a spinal cord injury as affecting movement of limbs, but it affects everything below the nerve damage-even breathing.

After watching my mother die from severe sepsis bc her infectious disease dr threw out a positive sample saying it was just contaminated i can promise you 1000% antibiotics are no doubt better for you than the infection!! Theres nothing an antibiotic will do to you thats worse than an infection but at best it will save your life. Had my mother been given the proper treatment she would be here today. Instead in 9 days it ruined everything. The morticians had so much trouble getting her to look well for the funeral and even admitted she had a hard death. Anyone who will tell you antibiotics are no good is bs. Every drug has reactions and side effects. But im positive my mother would have rather taken the right antibiotic than go thru what she did. And to know there was a magic pill out there that could have fixed it all is the most damning part!

~~~ Zithromax (azithromycin), also known as Z-Pak, is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections by inhibiting the growth of bacteria in the body. A Z-Pak is typically taken over a five-day course to treat infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and infections of the ears, lungs and other organs. (When I have to take this, after just day 3, I truly felt like I had been at war, or, like I've run for 25 miles. It always took 3 - 4 weeks for my body to recover.)
The dentist prescribed Clindamycin, but after reading the reviews online I chose to not take it. I’m trusting my immune system and doing lots of warm salty water rinses throughout the day. I hope I don’t get an infection because I am still a little swollen and my neck lymph nodes are so much bigger. I just don’t want to disrupt my gut flora nor getting bacterial resistance. When I was a kid my mom would always give me antibiotics for flus which I don’t think was necessary.
@@DaanBrandt Arguable some doctors are overprescribing here too to some extent Daan, but the resistance was kinda inevitable even with proper use only. And while it shouldn't be ignored I suspect human healthcare might just be a small part of the puzzle, if this disturbed you don't look too much into livestock farming. Some lunatic back when bacteria developing resistance was already known tried giving chickens antibiotics and somehow they ended up growing much faster on a low dose of antibiotics in their feed (30-50% from memory, might be more). That turned out to work as well in many other species farmed for their meat so I don't have to explain what happened there. Oh and as a bonus especially in poultry farms it allowed to ramp up the chicken density since hygiene associated disease became less of a problem. In the Netherlands antibiotics can only be prescribed by a vet and they are typically also the only ones allowed to administer it, in certain situations the farmer is allowed to administer it but the prescription is still required. Not sure if this regulation is EU wide or just here, but I do know antibiotics are still commonly overused in many regions of the world. Needless to say a high density farm is a great way to breed resistant bacteria, humans will also be in contact with the animals so I'm sure there's some degree of risk in those activities continuing.
Fluoroquinolone abx are something that people who have the genetic connective tissue disorder, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, must only use as a last resort. There is a black box warning that this class of abx can cause ligament/tendon rupture in even "normal" people. Those of us with EDS already have weakened ligaments and tendons that greatly raising the risk of rupture. This includes those that quite literally hold our critical organs and bones in place. Thus can be life threatening! Every EDSer must have a frank discussion with their physician about the use of this abx, weighing the pros and cons to see if the benefits outweigh the risks.
I wished to hear a bit more on the bacterial resistance and their relation with the optimal antibiotic use times. For example: some people can stop antibiotics when they start feeling well, but not when the treatment is finished. Can this lead to antibiotic resistance?
@margodphd
@margodphd 6 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Due to ability of horizontal plasmid transfer between bacteria trough bacterial pilus (Gram negative bacteria has them predominantly) and other methods of acquiring DNA (for example transformation, that allows them to acquire an insert genetic material from environment - even dead pathogens ), allowing a small population of bacteria to survive can and very often does lead to development of resistance.
I had an impacted wisdom tooth last year. One day I was unable to open my jaw to eat or to speak. I went to the emergency room and they gave me antibiotics via IV as they said the tooth was infected and affecting nearby muscles. I was given Amox-Clav to take for two weeks or so. I was able to open my jaw again and eat, and two months later I was able to get the wisdom removed at a free dental clinic. However, as a result of the antibiotics, after my jaw healed I somehow ended up with urinary tract infections. I had those UTIs until early this year where I had severe abdominal pain and once again went to the emergency room to find out I had colitis. I was once again given Amox-Clav, same dosage same amount. This time, however, I take probiotics and cranberry multivitamins. They restore my stomach beneficial bacteria and cranberry make my bladder an inhospitable place for harmful bacteria like e coli. I would not say antibiotics were bad, but I think doctors really need to follow up with patients and explain that those antibiotics will destroy the good AND the bad.
does having antibiotic resistance mean that YOU as a person now have less effective antibiotics to use or is it a case of now the actual bacteria have become antibiotic resistant so someone else could potentially pick up that bacteria and have no success using antibiotics against it?
There is recycling one antibiotic out for another antibiotic that has not been used.
@extrastuff9463
@extrastuff9463 6 ай бұрын
The resistance talked about here is on the bacteria side, they reproduce much faster than us so while we're taking antibiotics the ones that can't deal with it get killed off. The few that deal with it better get a chance to reproduce and eventually the particular antibiotic won't work anymore (simply put). That's when other antibiotics or a mixture can be tried. You the person developing some kind of serious allergy to it would result in it not being wise to prescribe the particular antibiotic anymore. But short of that there's no reason the antibiotic would be more dangerous than it already was initially with the various potential complications listed in the video. And to me as a non-medical person it would also make sense that if resistant infection problem A now is dealt with by some other agent infection B later there's no reason why that antibiotic that failed against A wouldn't work, unless the bacteria causing B are already resistant to it.
@marky5493
@marky5493 6 ай бұрын
@@extrastuff9463 yeah, I think my point is, taking the same antibiotics over the years - does that induce resistance and render the antibiotics less effective or is it a case of you making the bacteria out there stronger and stronger by using antibiotics and one day the bacteria which has survived now gets into someone's life who's never had it before and then those antibiotics don't work as the bacteria itself is immune to it?
