Why are my fire ants partying? The answer will surprise you. I've discovered that it's actually for their survival! My pet fire ant colony, the Phoenix Empire, has started to hold these massive fire ant rave parties. During these seemingly random ant raves, the fire ants would come boiling up to the surface and could be seen running in all directions, in every section of their ant farm setup. It was a behaviour that remained a mystery to me for many years, until I finally discovered the reason for these raves this week. I also remember stomping on carpenter ants in street and slashing small ants in planting pot in two with my nails when I was a kid but since few years, the only invertebrates I kill are disease spreaders and pests like mosquitoes and cockroaches. I don't even let anyone else kill bugs.

When he mentioned that it's "anting season", it reminded me of something I saw the other day on a walk. Off the sidewalk, there was a massive swarm of ants. Nuptial flight? I took a closer look. No alates. And all the ants seemed to be paired off, jaw to jaw. I think I stumbled across an ant war.

Cool! Yesterday I saw a bunch of swarming yellow ants (with plenty of alates too). I'm pretty sure they're citronella ants, but I've never seen them before. Turns out they don't forage or come to the surface often because they farm root aphids for honeydew! I never would have cared to look this up before I started watching these videos. Today they're completely gone from the surface. Crazy to think there's a huge colony under my garden :P

this happens every spring for the ant colonies around my area. my mail box has become a brood pile multiple years in a row, i feel bad for them but they need to calm down so i can get my mail! most years we spray them with lysol then wipe it out, i feel bad for killing them but they do it every year since the mail box keeps them dry, but its getting annoying!

I love how you storytell and how you turn it into an almost soap opera thing. Honestly...bugs really don't do it for me, I'm pretty scared of most bugs and having been bitten by fire ants before, they freak me out. But I'm strangely hooked on this!! I really enjoy listening to you tell the story of what's happening with your colonies. You make this fascinating. Its really entertaining, thank you for teaching me something new and entertaining me. I want a call out for my daughter for her birthday! My daughter wanted her own ant farm years ago, but we discovered she was allergic to ant bites, and so, we could not get her an antfarm. Also, it's impossible for ants to avoid the virus because they live in colonies, if they seperated, they would all die out and the colony would perish. Unless the virus isn't too deadly.

I have an idea for a terrarium for the Poenix Empire once quarantine is over: An island with water surrounding it. One entrance could be over (glued in place) floating driftwood and water plants. The second could be from underneath. A small network of tubes connecting different parts of the island. These could be underground entrances to the island. I would dig small holes so that some of these tube entrances can be accessed from the top. I just thought this would look cool (I would name the island The Burning Island). Also make sure to tell me if you noticed, otherwise I will comment this on every video until you noticed or already built a terrarium. Just say sth along the lines of: I've read your stupid comment now get tf out of my comment section (A heart would do it too btw) Oh and another idea rename the Fire Fortress into nether fortress, the Magma Chambers into magmacube spawner and Hell's Kitchen into netherwart garden or soulsand valley.

AC Answer: Supermajors are for the protection of the colony. They protect the workers. For some species they even block the tunnels hole with their large abdomen. They also are for tearing up tough food.
