Frankly, the personal freedoms offered by the pre industrial eras, living in a small village where everyone knows me and I know everyone, warts and all, my life largely unregulated, to just be able to work and chill with my friends all day, socialising pretty much constantly in a tight knit community without every moment of my fucking life being regulated down to a T. It sounds pretty damn sweet.

I know one thing that makes me really unhappy as a 17 year old. It's the inability to have a hobby. once you start a hobby like sculpting or playing an instrument, you show ur work to others in hopes to find value in your work. But instead of apparition you're met with mockery, for your not as good as the people on social media. Now maybe this is just my personal experience, or I truly am just horrible at what I do. But what I noticed is my aunts uncles and father are more willing to pick up new hobbies, then most people my age. And I think that has a lot to do with the fear of judgment or discouragement from the artist on social media. Either way it causes a lack of purpose to young people, for now we are too scared to even look for interests.

Find something you like so much that you'll do it even if you suck at it. And realize that if you keep doing it, you will constantly get better at it. Keep working at it. Don't show it to other people too much at first. Take criticism as an opportunity to get better or as a challenge. If people mock you, prove them wrong. The good news is, the older you get, the less you care about what other people think. I'm at the point now where I don't really care and I do what I want. But it took me a long time to get there. I hope you get there quicker. I don't think this is a generational thing, I think it's just age. When I was 17, I cared a lot more about what people thought and I avoided doing things I wasn't good at.

I took up growing weed as a hobby a few years ago... I put so much work and effort and time into it and it brought me so much happiness while doing it. But the most fulfilling part was when I gave a friend of mine (he used to grow weed on a large scale) some of the weed from my first grow and he gave me so much positive feedback and he really seemed to get why I enjoyed growing. It was a really good experience that I cherish. That as well as the time my uncle (who also grows weed) was staying at my moms place and I stopped by to pick up a parcel that had some grow lights in it as well as some nutrients. He asked what was in the parcels and I showed him and we ended up talking about growing weed for over 3 hours. It was really meaningful experience.

@@darkzerk7 It's not just that. I hire in my company. Many of the younger people are devoid of life when they come to interview, or during their daily job, if they even make it that far. They are drones who have been brainwashed by a shitty education system into being stupid and following orders like a robot. And I don't mean "unintelligent", I mean "stupid". They know about their job, but seem to have no smarts or critical thinking. Any question or challenge that is slightly off the "main course" completely sends them spinning into orbit. Not knowing how to do something doesn't mean "look for books", "check the Internet" or "ask a senior". It means staring at the screen for 3 hours, then getting frustrated, saying "I'm no good, I suck, how come I don't know this?" and have zero productivity until a senior happens to check on them to bail them out.

I went to a wilderness camp in Utah because I wanted to do something different and out there one summer. Kinda sucked at first, but when I left, I looked out over the Lasalles and it was so beautiful that I cried because I was leaving. I think this video misses/slips by a pretty fundamental problem about why modern life causes loneliness: our way of life lacks tribes. You'll notice people are weirdly nostalgic about the military or high school despite the fact what happens there is objectively drudgery. The reason people form such strong connections there is that they involve people meeting over and over again non-competitively in a common struggle.

We live in a world of instant gratification where nothing we do that makes us feel good lasts for more than a few seconds. We're constantly looking for dopamine and it's become normal to just lay down for hours and stay up late, always looking for more media to consume so that we constantly feel good for those few seconds before moving on. Nobody wants to take responsibility for themselves and forgoe instant happiness for later happiness. They'd rather stay up late to feel good for those few seconds than make sure they wake up well rested and feeling good so they can take on the rest of the day. People need to rely less on instant gratification and more on delayed gratification for their dopamine, such as through working out daily.

In Cincinnati we have deep rooted German immigrant heritage which is why we celebrate Oktoberfest every year and there are a lot of places in town that have German inspired architecture and little setup town squares that if you read deep into it you could see as an unhealthy gentrifying but in the places that they are there isn't any severe poverty or the like so I think that it's a good thing that there's at least some special architecture in the city that I live in. It goes to show that you don't have to build a gigantic cathedral to make the place that you live special it just kind of add something that presents your identity as it is.

@@orangedalmatian yeah i understand that, but it's bullshit, like first tell me how is he supposed to have an even better life without being straight up rich? As a heads up, because he is mistaken, Homer wasnt created to represent a "loser" in the 80s/90s sence but he was created to represent the average american medium class worker of that era, he wasnt supposed to be a loser at most he was supposed to be a little stupid (that aspect of him has been exagerated over the years of course), he is the typical blue collar family man, if somewhat exagerated for comedy purposes of course The entire premise falls apart because of that alone, at most you could say that things havent improved in 20/30 years but neither have they degraded (and they have improved a lot and the show itself shows this as it has evolved to adapt to what the writers believe an "average middle class family" is supposed to have) the rest is just satire of normal american life Like really, idk what the fuck else you guys want? tell me why is homer's life supposed to be soo horrible and he is supposed to be a loser (all the shenanigans he gets involved in the series not withstanding), like really you guys need some perspective Also, appeal to fiction falacy

Happiness is about getting what you want (that's more than you actually need). By 35 you understand that getting personal happiness with other people is impossible - unless you are lucky to have found a soul mate. Other people's feelings are beyond you control. You can't make them love you... So, by that age you learn not to fall in love. You learn to spend your money on yourself. That's the happiest you can get. You admit and embrace it - you are happy.

@@bigboineptune9567 in short, no, in fact america is in a pretty average shape for a country, she's just having a bad day. compared to other western countries, america has a relatively great economic growth, and despite all this "racism" and "segregation" and protests, america is still compared to a whole lot of countries, really stable and also what i really really like, really open to each other's culture. America is a unique nation in my opinion, she can't be measured in a normal measurement. her culture is like no other, not because they're doing something different, no in fact her culture is practically non-existent, american culture is conglomeration of any and every culture on earth, making it wquite literally, earth's cultural capital. you can stroll the streets of new york and find practically people from across the globe living next or on top of each other and living their lives. an "american" is also non-existent. there's no such thing as an american race, being an american in my opinion is morelike a decaration, thet you're a part of this land called america. you can be chinese, filipino, italian, british, anything, and you can still be american, and in my opinion, it's wonderful. America is not a perfect nation, obviously. the scars from her past still affects them even to this day, effects of slavery and wealth segregation still affects millions of americans. but again it's like there's a perfect nation on earth, in the end any nation are still run by faulty humans, they got driven by their own ambitions and ego, thus a perfect nation is impossible to be achieved. the difference with america is that, everyone is practically a fan of her. media all across the world, points their camera at every little thing that they do. both the good and the bad. it's possibly the most transparent nation on earth right now with just how much the media is locked on america. that's why many people espescially americans felt like all the bad of this world is in america. while in truth, it's not. as an indonesian that's fascinated by this country named America, and have intensely studied her history, policy, and even her faults, all i can say is that, america is by all accounts a great nation. it's not perfect, and there's a ton that can be improved, but america is not falling anytime soon. she's just having a bad day, a stressful day perhaps. her old rival went away, and a new guy appeared out of thin air is trying to hurt her, that's why she's a bit stunned. but if history says smething is that, america is a rebel nation, and she's not gonna fall without a fight. -love from Jakarta, Indonesia

@@zinedinezethro9157 I appreciate your feedback. It's very valuable to get some perspective as to how we stand on the world stage compared to others. I am still very worried about America's future for three reasons. 1. America is geographically, politically, and culturally predisposed towards disunity. It hasn't happened yet because until recently, most of America's population was centered around the Northeast of the country in states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York. The South and West of the country was very sparsely populated. However, with the industrial decline of these regions and the rise of air conditioning, we saw massive migrations to the Sun Belt starting around 1950. States like Texas, California, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida became the new economic and cultural juggernauts of the USA. This in turn put much of the country's population away from the central government, making it more out of touch with the population and breeding instability. If you look at a map of America, its geographic fault lines become very apparent. For example, the West Coast, being very geographically isolated from the rest of the country, should logically be independent. The effects of these geographic fault lines are limited now because the migration was so recent, but as time passes, the isolation will cause greater cultural differences between regions. 2. The central government is out of touch with the needs of the population. With all of these dividing factors that I mentioned, you would think that America would be run on a federation system that grants very much autonomy to the states, right? Wrong. Since the Roosevelt presidency, the government in Washington has tried to act less like a light-touch government in charge of a federation, and more like a strong, centralized European government. This has caused innumerable issues and reignited sectionalism. Every time one political party or the other seizes control in an election, it immediately tries to impose its ideology and policies on the whole country, including on the states that don't want it. As a result, a huge amount of resentment and anger has emerged between the Blue States (states dominated by the Democrats) and the Red States (states dominated by Republicans). These two groups of states are basically alliances between different states within the union, often acting on issues in unison with each other and intentionally going against what the other alliance of states does. 3. America is losing its identity. I think that the most accurate observation you made about America is that American identity is a declaration. This is very true. American identity centers around a vague American-ness, and a sense of commonality and patriotism. This is dying. Increasingly, we are seeing more and more people making the declaration of being anti-American. They decry America as the ultimate evil, a representation of colonialism, racism, sexism, and oppression at its peak. These people loathe the country, have no faith in its ability to do good, and often take more pride in their city or state than the country as a whole. This group is growing at an alarming rate. We saw it last summer with the country-wide riots, with burned American flags and anti-American slogans chanted ad nauseam. This mentality is everywhere. It's in our streets, our media, even in our own government. America isn't held together by one race, one tribe, or one culture. It is held together by the shared sense of pride and unity between the people of this country. If that dies, the glue holding America together is gone. By this definition, America is dying.

@@bigboineptune9567 those three are really great concerns and i bet since you're an american, you feel it the most. and in my opinion it's really good that you and i bet many americans can see these concerns through an eye of a realist. again just to be a disclaimer, i am not an american, so i guess it's obvious that what i'm seeing from the outside will be different from what you guys are seeing from the inside. for the extreme political polarization, at least from my experiences with many americans friends, in my opinion at least is exagerated. i am not implying that there are no exteremism at all, i do have found and met americans in the far-right and far-left, i mean just look at the media nowadays. but again, at least from what i see and experience, most americans no matter what their race is, are quite centrist i guess? they might lean a bit or somebit to the other side, but mostly still not extreme. but again it's not like i know a whole bunch of americans, so it's just might be the group that i'm in is coincidentally filled with more centrist people. and to connect with that, yeah i do think washington is doing it kinda wrong, i would argue that there's little to no country in the world that's as diverse as america in it's nature and people. so yeah the fact that they're acting likew it's not is indeed disadvantaging to america. but again, american states are in general have more freedom than most other prefectures or province in any other nation. so i guess that's already a plus, just need to expand a bit more. then about the population, this is something i also know of, and this is off-topic, but fr america is the only nation wwhere a whole damn national migration can happen cuz a damn AC Lmao. it is true that there are more peopleliving in the west and south now and i bet it will continue to be like that espescially for the southern states and espescially Texas. I personally think that this will actually benefits america in the long term, yes it will definitely bring conflicts and debates, but i do think in thelong term it will only basically empower the manifest destiny act. lastly the national identity, again i can't really say a lot since im not an american, but again despite americans i know are not extremely patriotic or something, they are in fact still loves their nation. other than that well as an outsider i can't really say much to it. well basically what i'm trying to say is this, it's really easy pointing the bad things, espescially at america since everything is really transparent believe it or not. but by doing so, it makes it hard to appreciate the good that's around you. at least until you lost it. but again, at least from what i study in history, a good nation always criticize themselves. yiu guys already know what your problems are, now just to fix it.

I used to live in a big city going to a big college for business, had a banking internship lined up and when the first day came and went I dropped out of college and became a farmer and now a ranch hand. I’ve now lived in 6 different states at the age of 21 and I know thats what makes me happy is working hard and taking pride in my work. I also have to do physical work as sitting in an office seems like purgatory to me. Everyone says life is too short to not enjoy it but in my eyes it’s way too long to not enjoy what you do daily.

Thanks man. As a 16-year-old white guy with a poor but stable family, I find meaning and happiness by listening to older music, engaging in fiction stories, being with fun people, and enjoying nature and the world around me. I wish that more of my friends, some of whom have cut themselves and most of whom have at some point been depressed, could feel the same appreciation for life that I do. But then again I am a white guy so I know I’ve had it easier than most of them. Basically, instead of falling into this pit of self-pity and loneliness and sadness, I’m trying to get as much money and comfort as possible in the next decade by following what is essentially a life plan. After all, as a white guy living in America, this system was designed for me to succeed, so if I follow it I hope that I will eventually be happy, carefree, and financially free from worry and stress. Not necessarily rich, but rich enough to not worry about money. And unfortunately it feels like I’m living in basically the best case scenario, even though my only real life goals are to be richer than my parents, and be reasonably happy, and if one aspect of my plan fails, like I don’t get into the right college or get the right job, my whole life could be messed up. It’s seriously depressing if you think about it too much.

His point on ugliness is something that I have been pointing out for years with my friends. I remember watching the Lord of the Rings many years ago when in my 20s and Rivendell struck me as something so beautiful that I was pissed off to not see anyone over the years genuinely try and build a small town or city in that style of architecture. Worse, now some fuckers are tying that to white supremacy. I'm envious that Middle Easterners are free to use their Islamic calligraphy styles in all their newly built architecture but Westerners and Christians try and do their best to suppress art styles of Celtic, Baroque and Renaissance and numerous others to these ugly post-modern garbage dumps that pass for structures today It's not fair and I hate how fucking ugly it all is

You labelled most of the steps to a happier life: exorcise/eat better vitamin d (outside/pill) socialize have a hobby All of these can be combined into one too, such as a bike club, or changing to an outdoor job. I believe the lost tend to take turns at suffering the problem during a moment of quiet collapse: after a breakup, firing, report card, moment of insomnia, when our car dies, or gadget doesn't work, a fight, when the destroyer archetype is at hand to remind us of our quest of transformation; then switch to burying it as deep as possible through a large catalog of vices to choose from. People may be led down a rigid pathway to a goal, such as a dating app, but we still have more free time than ever, which is why anxiety is higher than ever. Anxiety's definition is a fear, but not knowing what fear is. People want to find reason to why their life is where it is, and how they became stumped in a hole, overthinking the problem (occam's razor); however, rationalizing won't get you out of the rabbit hole outside of grabbing a pen and paper to ask yourself why your life sucks and what you can do to get out of it. Alternatively, psychologists have a tool of creating a square with four boxes with: 1) what I want and need to do, what I want but dont need to do, what i need to do but dont want to do, and what i dont want or need to do. Mentioning Jordan Peterson's obvious 12 rules for life, the answers are right in front of us. People that lift weights say to try it, because at least you can prove to yourself that you can do something, and improve upon it, when you are at that point that you can't clean your room, get a job, quit a bad habit, or make any impact to anyone else but your mom. Our current culture structure is broken in teaching the fundamentals to happiness. Yeah, perhaps sinning is cheaper with lower classes easier access to decadence. Like the clergy from medieval times, sin surrounds us the same as it always has. Like mentioned in the video, so many of the fundamentals in the functioning society depend upon the culture our ancestors founded through centuries of development, and why so many counter cultures want to dilute it is beyond me. That culture for the Western world is founded upon Christian principles. Read Why Nations Fail if you are more curious about how tied culture is to a functioning democracy for example. The definition of culture is unspoken of values of a society. For the US, many of those unspoken values are in our constitution. The main part of our culture agrees with it, subcultures tend to follow it, but there is a growing underground of counter cultures that wish to destroy it, which is why they are so often tied to communism's attempts to remove religion, and any other institutions with any authority (if you are more interested look up Yuri Bezmenov's cultural subversion, and the tools KGB used to usurp other nations). There is good argument to be culturally Christian, if not culturally religious or spiritual. Faith is not as much believing in something rationally, but practicing it as if it were true, or might be true. And like people overthinking the reasons why they are unhappy, the process is senseless and irrational. In our computer chairs, or beds, how long can most of us suspend our minds to walk past these mist of anxiety? In pursuit of the irrational, I believe what we want is happiness; but like suffering the Appalachian trail, satisfaction is sustainable happiness, and that is what we need. It won't be a comfortable process. A muscle must be broken, to then become stronger a week from now.

I currently teach Japanese adults, mostly businessmen, at an online English school, and it disgusts me how some of these people take pride in dedicating their entire lives to their jobs and not giving a shit about their family. They usually tell me that on the weekdays they would start work at 8 AM, end at 9 PM, and go home at around 11 when their wife and kids are already fast asleep. On the weekends, they either continue their work from home, play sports with their coworkers/bosses or study some skill their bosses demand them to learn (like accounting, English etc.) I often ask them whether they spend time with their families, and they say yes, but only one or two times a month when they take them on outings. And when I ask them if they ever get worried that they're not being for their kids, they just say no, they don't, because it's "just the wives' job" to do such things apparently. The fact they say that so nonchalantly, and even take pride in it, really hits home what Whatifalthist said about modern bourgeoise capitalism and postmodern thinkers, on how they see basic human needs like socializing, to be a "weakness" or even a second priority because of how it doesn't contribute to the industrialized economy. Sorry for coming off as rude, I don't mean to generalize the Japanese, it's just these few salarymen that think that taking care of children is a "wife's job" because they couldn't bother about their own offspring really hits me. It makes me thankful that my father, despite working late hours too in another country, still messages me sometimes if I'm okay.

There is no such thing as a greater meaning that predefines our human conditions. What you meant was that humans have evolutionary grown into tribal systems with a small amount of mobility and division of labour. The industrial and post-industrial processes of the last 200 years or so have crushed that evolutionary habituation, which was long-term established in a relatively short time. Thus we have problems to adapt to the overwhelming complexity of the globalized world; it just happens to fast for us to process it. Ideologies fragment by the visibility of other ideologies from other parts of the world who are preached with the same rigidity and make our beliefs relative. This can be a great threat to our collective sanity but we can't turn back time and resettle in tribes. We have to develop a system to create contextual meanings but no hegemonial concept like god, socialism, liberalism etc. which offers a monocausal view on EVERYTHING will ever be convincing.

Have you ever seen a clip of a talk by Slavoj Zizek where he describes why people in Yugoslavia were more happy under Communism than now? I thought it was quite interesting. He said that under Communism, whilst there were no problems with getting food, there were sometimes shortages of certain things like coffee. You could have coffee a few times a week, but there'd be some week where there was no coffee, and then you'd appreciate the days when you did have coffee more. Now, there's coffee everyday. Every city and town has a Starbucks or a Costa. Nobody with the money to buy it, goes without coffee, so they lose their appreciation.

Great video as always. To your final question of how to fix the world. I’d refer back to Jordan Peterson’s thoughts on the matter. “You can’t fix the world. It’s too big. But you can fix yourself and in doing so you are helping the world to get better.” Few items for sure that we can do: 1. Exercise and play more sports 2. Cook and eat at home more often 3. Stop or reduce the use of social media 4. Live below your means and actively work to reduce all debt. 5. Actively do Random acts of kindness

"People like to watch movies with apocolypse and they wish it would happen." Can relate so much to this, every night i wish i wake up to a zombie apocolypse or some other fucking disaster so i can run away from the responsibilities and this modern world, build a cabin outside of cities and civilization and just focus on surviving and try to live in peace , like at this point i don't even care if my family or friends would die in that situation, i just want an excuse to run away. did the mistake of opening up about this to one of my friends and i got called selfish and ungrateful, maybe that's true and i have some kind of problem but i just don't care anymore, i'm tired.

You don’t sound selfish, you sound like you need a shakeup. I don’t know your situation but if i was living in such a way that i didn’t care if world blew up then I’d do something different. Perhaps it’s your job..... get a new one, something off the wall, why not? Your worried about stability? Why you just admitted you would find joy in an apocalypse that forced you to go squat in a cabin... so what do you have to lose? Are you in grade school? Ok maybe you have to finish that obligation for personal reasons, what can you do within that organization then? Even something As simple as cutting off all your hair just to feel different can totally change the way you see life. You don’t have to be stuck in whatever situation your in. This is your life and you define what makes you happy, even if nobody else gets it. Wow i had a lot to say there, sorry your post just reminded me of something i would have Said 2 years ago, so it hit a little personal to me. Feel free to take my advice or roll your eyes at it, my only request is that you don’t go commit murder..... nothing against murders but I’m not fond of dieing and for all I know your my neighbor ( who probably doesn’t like me,.. I've read and thought about this issue a lot. I'd recommend people read "The Depression Cure" by Dr. Stephen Ilardi. It's a great book that details how our modern, sedentary, isolated lifestyle is drastically different than our hunter-gatherer ancestors and how this negatively impacts us. I'm convinced that part of the answer to this issue is stronger worker protections so that people have more time outside of work to build relationships in their communities. Also, the Standard American Diet is awful and we consume way too much processed food. Eating organic, unprocessed foods helps too.

Lack of beauty! Thank you for mentioning it, it seems barely anyone notices this. Almost every city improvement in my country ends up placing more grey concrete slabs, sealing more ground and leaving less livable space. Places ruined by war and left alone are actually the most colourful and culturally productive sites now.

I have literally never had my exact thoughts (like literally, uncanilly exact) laid out in such a manner. Primarily the point about beauty, I look at the past and, even though objectively bad in many regards, we see great buildings and cathedrals, we see great paintings and statues. Streets filled with beauty, the countryside filled with natural beauty. And then I look back at the present and see the concrete blocks we have that start breaking down after 10 years, that is the legacy we will be passing down.

Something that your lack of beauty part reminded me of is that recently, Andrew Yang called for New York City to adopt a new flag design that would hopefully be better than the one they have. Most of the discussion I saw consisted of people mocking the proposal and saying there are better things to do with the city government's time and money than design a new flag. My thought the entire time was "Do they not know that a good flag can be a very unifying symbol?"
@Marcus-gw4bb
@Marcus-gw4bb 3 жыл бұрын
You used the word unifying and it triggered something in me. I am not a US citizen but I do consume a lot of entertainment from there. I noticed that in particular Superman movies/TV shows, his usual catch phrase, "truth, justice and the American way", yes it does sound corny but my god is modern American society so depressing and cynical that they can't even let the actors playing the character say those words? Even fans/youtubers who adore Superman can't even bring themselves to say those words. I think the political climate and everything that is going on in the world right now has taken its toll on all of us.
