Why are some Caribbean nations ditching the Queen? | The Stream

In recent months, more former British colonies in the Caribbean have declared their intent to abolish the monarchy and remove Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state.
Those countries include Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica and St. Kitts and Nevis. Last November, Barbados cut ties with the British monarchy and became the world's newest republic.
The trend towards republicanism isn't new. Dominica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago all became republics in the 1970s. But the spread of the Black Lives Matter movement, along with an increased interest in reckoning with the colonial past, has influenced Caribbean politicians.
Royal tours aimed at strengthening ties between the Queen and former British colonies have appeared to do the exact opposite. Visits by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Earl and Countess of Wessex prompted protesters to renew calls for slavery reparations and a more meaningful apology for abuses during the British empire.
In this episode of The Stream, we'll discuss what constitutional monarchy means for Caribbean countries today.

All African and Carribbean countries have independence. I think South Africa in 1994 was the last(when the ANC came too power) and Namibia after it gained independence from South Africa in 1990.

@@richardhussey7641 , Define " independence ". 1. If those Caribbean countries are part of the British Commonwealth, they can't be truly referred to as such. 2. If same Caribbean nations celebrate the Queen's birthday as a national holiday where even the BANKS are closed in her honor, you can't refer to them as " independent ". 3. If those Caribbean still have Privy Council as the arbiter in the decision for a prisoner on death row, then that country is not truly " independent. "

If Great Britain 🇬🇧 wants to have a monarchy that is there choice. If those commonwealth countries wants to be free then they have every right too and I think it should be those countries choices and not the outside worlds interference. Now when those countries become independent it’s all on them to craft their own identity. And the sista who spoke about if it was the past then how come racism still exists it’s because it in our nature to be that way. Is it ok no but it’s just apart of us. Also everyone no matter the skin tone, religion, race , sexuality , or class has bias towards one another. Me being African American I have been called akata by numerous Africans that immigrates to America. So until we address that issue then other issues will continue to persist 💯

That why Caribbean nations are on the Blackfoot, after they paid slave owners to give up their slaves upon what they already exploited, then the slaves owners went back to Europe and develop Europe. Nothing really tangible for the slaves or slaves offspring as compared to slaves owners.

The one's you have to worry about is a Totalitarianism is a form of government and a political system that prohibits all opposition. The Chinese are still locking up their own people because of their religion. Why are they putting money into the Caribbean by the time you find out it will be too late. The United kingdom has 54 Voluntary members of the Commonwealth. It's for the the good of every country that is a member. Now the UK has left the EU it will have more time with it friends and allies around the world. Take care and God bless.

The fact that government in the Caribbean love the old slave colonial system to keep their people oppressed is the main reason reparation should not be paid because the majority of the people will not benefit only a few colonial masters will be happy

Not just to them, but all, such as the aboriginal peoples of Australia and New Zealand, yourselves, Africans, all of them. Britain is delusional about its true status. I just see them as a has been power, dying, slowly dying and at any point it could be wiped out by a more superior power, like Russia. I mean you do the maths. Get rid of them, I live in the UK, moving out of the UK soon, but they are racist, arrogant and frustratingly ignorant. I have never met such an ignorant peoples in all my life as I have with the English and Welsh. Scottish and Irish are different, they are not such bell ends like the English and Welsh. I say all commonwealth countries should leave and demand reparation directly from the Royal Family. They are afterall said to be worth $88bn, not $500m. That money is theft money, theft jewells, theft gold, all stolen. So yes, they do need to give it all back.

How do you decolonize? That to me is the true problem. Colonisation is complete and apparently irreversible starting with language. Expanding to methods of governance and security process military and otherwise. Colonization is complete and forever a dominant part of the culture of former colonies.

So far, the populations in the French departments of the Carribean have voted through referenda to stay with France. The situation is different with New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean, where increasing votes for independence has put the archipelago on the way to independence.

Don't really care, if they want to leave...leave! Their excuses for leaving, blaming the past for everything, isn't great. Its like your ex wife taking to court for your grandfather slapping her grandmother centuries ago. You can't be accountable for your past and shouldn't have to apologise as the people seeking recompense weren't alive. So the argument doesn't stand. Live life and prosper

What an absolute load of ignorant BS!. You and all the others who share this sentiment are part of the problem. And why world issues will never cease. It's easy for you to flippantly make such remarks, reviews or opinion based on ignorance and very little knowledge it would appear. Go do some research, edify and educate yourself and then come back with a more rounded and level sense of rationale and reasoning!!. The excuses YOU gave "like your ex wife taking to court your grandfather"....what a joke. Not even near anything you can compare to. Your not even worth the skin on my fingertips typing anymore. As you'll only probably respond by regurgitating your nonsense. So I won't wait for any response of relevance..none needed!. Go live your life and prosper!!.

It's not being bitter it's asking for your self respect. How can head of another country be the head of your country ? Though they are defacto independent having queen as head of state symbolically shows that they are still under the British crown. Imagine king of Spain still having the title of king of Phillipines ?

Monarchy is good. Having a ruler is necessary for laws and progress, infrastructure, education etc. If you could choose your ruler, youd best to choose be the British. They created the most highest functioning society systems. We should be grateful of that. Many countries wanted independence, but they were better off with white rulers, they've been poor ever since.
