I was looking for a well-researched video on the isekai craze. The top results fail to answer the question of “why isekai?” spectacularly. Thanks for going God’s work.

My theory was always that in the modern world threatened by climate change, general poverty, the general feeling of "we are all doomed" everybody kinda craves escapism and a chance of doing a restart under different conditions...

There's a bit more to "Isekai are easy to write" that I'd like to highlight: the most common themes of Isekai also happen to intersect with "most common mistakes that new writers make." Creating compelling characters, backstories, and settings takes a lot more skill than what most new writers have, so they usually just create a self-insert and throw them at the closest established setting. Plotting out an actual story is a lot harder than it looks, so most new writers simply keep giving their protagonist new powers and assume that counts as story progression. The same goes for anything else that the author thinks is cool and worth collecting: titles, wealth, women, etc. (Yes, it's extremely sexist to refer to women as things to collect. I hate the harem genre.) A common motivation for a lot of people to start writing in the first place is as a coping mechanism: they deal with feeling frustrated and/or unfulfilled in their real lives by writing themselves into a story where all their wishes come true. Now, take a look at the formula for modern Isekai: audience surrogate protagonist gets thrown into a stock-fantasy RPG world. He's immediately given godmode cheats that any gamer is his position would want, then spends the rest of the series living out an otaku's dream lifestyle as he collects new superpowers, waifus, and upgrades for his home base.

Well-said and I agree 100 percent. However, I beileve, that the Rising of the Shield Hero breaks the mold of the "perfect' isekai story. Naofumi wanted all of that, but once he was framed for a crime he didn't commit, the story took a more "realistic" turn on the entire "summoned to another world as the overpowered hero that women want and men want to be."

I'll still busy with Eminence in the Shadow here online. Cid Kageno literally looks like a clash combination of Sao Alicization Kirito and Lelouch from Code Geass and I'm also considering watching I'm standing on 1 million lives in the future.

@@qwerty6789x I never said they weren't trash. I said that the trash was obviously written by rookie authors with zero writing skills.

Mushoku tensei pioneered a lot of the classic isekai tropes, just wanna say it.

It was written around the same time as shield hero and a bunch of other isekai. You can’t say that it pioneered the genre when the different works were literally being written in parallel with all of the authors reading each others chapters every publishing cycle. The whole "we pioneered the genre" is just a marketing stunt from kadokawa

@MrFram No your wrong. It's the same way SAO pioneered that generic black haired MC that's OP. It's not because they did it first, it's that they got popular first.

@@putent9623 When watching The Irregular at magic high school online in the past I noticed a few Characters from the series had similar hairstyles to Kirito, Sinon, Yuuki and Silica. I've finished season 1 subbed, the victor arc and The Honor at Magic High School dubbed

Tbh here Rising of the shield hero, So what I'm a spider and Re:Zero and That Time i got reincarnated as a Slime lost my intrigues and i gave up with them. Log Horizon and Chivalry of a failed Knight left me on a cliffhanger with seasons 1 and 3

Sooner or later people will get bored watching only light novel isekai anime adaptations. This is why I prefer to watch mainly Mecha anime now.

I'm getting bored with Attack on Titan here I think after finishing Season 2 and skipping straight to the final episode of last season on my Funimation app I'll be hoping onto the Mecha just because Giant Robot fights seem more interesting to me than these human eating kaijus and Eren Yaeger Controlling one of them. Darling in the Franxx, Mobile Suit Gundamn, Glass afleet, Blue Gender and Fullmetal Panic seem pretty preferable for my future watching online. I've already seen Gurren Lagann online and on dvd years ago.

I am new to Isekai stuff but I love the idea of putting the characters in a place he/she has struggle, thus creating interesting story and interaction. Doesn't Japanese love to mentally torture characters? 6:21 Phone AND the Japanese Language really help the genre.

Kino's Journey I'll probably preferring that over Alternative ggo due to how a journey across the world on a motorbike that talks and thinks was more interesting than a berserk Pitohui/Kanzaki Elsa and a masochistic M/Asougi Goushi though Karen/LLENN and Fukaziroh were good.

It was all because of Haruhi Suzumiya...I guess you start good to continue to release trash isekais till the end of Earth. I think there will still be isekais even 20 years from now, and these years will be seen as filled with classics.
