for me it was because I'm from a country that illegalizes lgbt stuff and because i feel like i can really connect to that emotional aspect of gay relationship, like... in my eyes, they have to try harder to stay together against all odds. like, straights have it easy, but here you actually need work, emotional labour, from both sides. also, I'm bi

i used to be one of those into "height difference/age difference" in yaoi with the short bottom being stick thin and the tall guy being built like thor or probably even more buff... buuut nooww.. 😅 *I HATE THAT* . .now i wanna see the guys about the same height and the same age and both are the average "not feminine" guys. if one is feminine or a crossdresser, then i want that femboy as a top and the very masculine guy as the bottom hahahah

As a gay man yaoi specifically written by women are very upseting there are exceptions but its all very cutsey or predatory and its very clear that its not meant for me or any other LGBT individual which is a problem

My obsession originated purely came from trying to 'get used to' seeing gay people in media. When i was younger i was primarily exposed to hetrosexual relations, and i was heavily sheltered😅. I avoided man X man videos as if it were the plague... I have to admit i was pretty homophobic, purely because i lacked understanding and didnt know better. I then stumbled into anime because of my brother...(Fuck that asshole) And after some coaxing myself i watched a bakudeku video and thought; 'this is actually pretty damn good' and that started my obsession with Mha🥲. After a year of prying myself out of the Mha fandom i still liked bl and continued to watch it. Then i found out manga exists and it spiraled (again) from there. Now i am a Bl addict and have started watching Bl dramas... I think i will never excape the hole that i started digging 3 years ago😭

New anime has stupid names and premises. Something happened in the 2000s that separated the average Toonami kids from hard core weebs and there's no going back.

This turned out to be a lot more complicated than I thought. My opinion before watchin the vid was that it was mostly fetishizing homo relationships. Now I see it's a bit of that, combined with escapism from sexist oppression and another way of finding out what one's into when it comes to relationship shit

I find BL to be more complex imo. Also the MCs look mad handsome. Who wouldn't want to see handsome men explore their own emotions and be vulnerable? Edit: This video is so accurate. I don't get the same rush when I read Josei cause I find the spicy scenes to be generic. Like, I'm trying to see some dudes cry and blush too. With Josei, the male romantic interest is the one that gets to be the one on top and we don't get much from their reactions when they do the deed. Maybe the fact that 🌽 hub's section 'For Women' is filled with men self woohooing can attest to why heterosexual females like BL so much. Edit 2: Forgot to mention this. Instead of reading Japanese ecchi. I fee like Korean manhwa authors really have this down pat when they do stories where men are the submissives and the female main character is more dominant. However there are some outliers in manga like Tonari no seki no hen na senpai. That is some great stuff.

typical anime fanservice focuses on the female characters, but yaoi/bl lets me focus on male bodies since that’s what i’m attracted to

i think it boils down to the fact that even in China the mainstream pop culture is so heavily influenced by Japanese and Korean pop culture that there really isn't much to export, like the most popular shows among young people are heavily influenced by Korean style survival shows and Hoyoverse games + artwork also shows the strong influence of the anime artstyle and Japanese RPG

For me, I do like straight stuff, omg do some stories and books do straight relationships dirty.. while with either Yaoi or Yuri (which I both like), it’s actually kinda wholesome most of the time when you wanna check out a book about it. Unless if it’s on webtoon there’s like a 30/70 chance I feel.

I'm a lesbian who occasionally reads/watches yaoi, the main draw for me isn't titillation, but romances often written by and for women. There's a trend in fanservice catered towards men in which female characters are being sexualized in a way that clearly makes them uncomfortable, and sometimes even involves them being sexually harassed/assaulted. Take the classic "guy trips and lands in compromising position with girl" or "guys try to peek at girls in baths" or "guy looks up a girls skirt" ect. though these kinds of scenes are present in a lot of animes that I otherwise enjoy, I can't help feeling bad for the girls. As someone who's been in situations with creepy men like that, it leaves a pit in my stomach. It's not attractive to me, even as someone who's into women, because seeing women getting treated like garbage feels shitty. In BL/yaoi, while there's some incredibly weird shit sometimes, there's often a distance from the male gaze, and room to see romance and sex in a way that somehow removes men from the situation while being about men.

Awww yea I can't wait for a guy to tell me why I like yaoi..! Listening to guys telling me why I explore my sexuality in particular ways and live my life is my fav thing to do. Why the heck is this SOOO perplexing to dudes and not guys liking two girls together. Bah. Hope it's actually insightful from female perspectives and mb acknowledge the differences between writing style and protagonist types in the genre compared to otome, etc and why a girl may feel more comfortable reading bl!

I would like to add that a lot of popular shonen stories (like Naruto, captain tsubasa and more) do not have female protagonists or have ones that are not well written (for example they serve as romantic interest with no character arc). However in those same shows we got men that interact with each other, save each other, talk about each other, have character arcs. So the logical outcome is : they smooch

I'm a girl. There are no kind, gentle and understanding guys in my environment. By the way, I'm afraid of men and I can't communicate with them properly. I wanted to know more about guys, but manga with straight couples didn't always give me different behaviors, so I went to look for variety in yaoi. I don't think these are all the reasons, but I can't remember more. I apologize for my illiteracy, it was written with the help of a translator :_

I dont know why but i kinda find yaoi more fitting when it comes to different types of dynamics. You won't feel as if its so unbalanced nad just sit right for each other... Thats why i dont like bl smuts sometiems since what im looking for is dynamics that actually make sense and won't feel like the other partner is like idk annoying to look at?. I've watch straight couple anime back then and i kinda hate how the girl is always like this and that it doesn't really show a great dynamic and show how much of a reasonable relationship they have.. Its just some flirts and lude stuff
