What if YOU could unlock the secrets of the longest-lived people on the planet?
Well, I’ve got great news: You can.
On this episode I do a deep dive on Blue Zones - the 5 geographic regions that are home to some of the world's longest-living people - and let you in on some secrets that could help YOU live the longest, healthiest life possible.
And as the only nutrition expert to spend most of their career living in a blue zone, I can tell you that these secrets are likely NOT what you’re expecting
I bust some of the biggest blue zone myths, reveal my #1 longevity-booster when it comes to diet, and share how YOU can set yourself up to live a long, healthy life - no matter your location.
I’ll also answer some of YOUR most pressing questions on the matter - straight from my instagram!
On this episode you’ll learn:
Surprising foods that may be shortening your lifespan - and how to help offset the damage (10:06)
Why Italians avoid THESE 2 foods (they’re likely in your pantry) - and how you can ditch them for good (11:09)
The common denominator in ALL blue zones - and how it can help YOU live a healthier, longer life (12:46)
What most people get wrong about this “bad-for-you” food - and why it’s so popular in many of the blue zones (16:20)
Why I consider myself a “veg-aquarian” - and the dietary changes you can make to reap serious health benefits (19:30)
My must-know longevity secret and how it doubles as a tool for weight-loss (hint: it has nothing to do with diet) (22:50)
The IDEAL way to fast for maximum benefits - and what to do when you get hungry) (28:39)
How people in the blue zones avoid THIS health-wrecker - and how you can too (35:00)
How I have changed my lifestyle since living in a blue zone (and easy changes you can make TODAY) (37:28)

When talking about "Blue Zones", people always talk about their diets. What is always missed in these discussions is the following: Firstly...early to bed, early to rise. They get a good nights sleep. They also do not have cars, therefore they get plenty of exercise by walking everywhere. They work their plots of land to grow and harvest their own organic food. These people have simple, stress-free lives, not participating in the consumer trap that most people are caught up in. They also have their afternoon siesta (nap). Additionally they have strong bonds with the people in their small communities that they have known since childhood. All of these factors lead to a life of longevity. Not just diet!

Yep. Its like the intro to 'Outliers' points out when examing the low death rate of a small Pennsylvania town mainly populated with immigrants from an Italian (If I remember correctly) village - basically, they kept their old traditions of deep community ties, strong family bond, etc. like you've mentioned. It was no 'one thing'.

Besides the sheep and goats cheese and yogurts, I think one major factor of those BLUE ZONES inhabitants is their almost stress free lifestyle. The stress caused by hustling bustling lives, crazy parties full of cocktails and alcohols, bad people constantly full of negative influences and opinions can generate a lot of inflammations in the bodies. I think we don’t need meditations but we need to take our lone time to stay in very quiet, peaceful scenic nature. People who live on the mountains are surrounded by nature of the fresh airs and possible clean waters.

Dr Gundry, everything you say rings true regarding compressing the eating window...BUT by intermittent fasting and not stimulating mTor continuously (by snacking), logically this means one can eat meat as often as one likes in the short eating window. Yes, eating meat stimulates mTor but so does any form of protein. This is the situation I would like to see addressed/answered. I note David Sinclair/Matt LaPlante in their new podcast Episode 2 about 'Food and When to eat' did not clarify this either. Dr Sinclair just trotted out data from the old dodgy food survey data which lumped "meat" in with a fast food/processed diet, so was a bit disappointed in that one.

So we're to strictly moderate in-take of animal protein for the sake of longevity, but in the pursuit of longevity we're to eat large amounts of certain cheeses that happen to be high in, errr... animal protein(??).

Yes, it seems like a contradiction. I heard Dr. Benjamin Bickman prainsing meat protein over plant protein many times. And saying that protein produces very short living mTor spikes. That it is insulin who causes detrimental elevations of mTor.

Can you do a video on what to do the day after not sleeping the entire night? Can I still exercise? Should I nap or not nap? How do I recovered so that my insomnia doesn’t get worse? Help?
@luciana_nemes
@luciana_nemes 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, we will never recover lost sleep 100%. Each time we sleep less than 7 hours we are in debt and that can never be paid off. So that's why it's extremely important to sleep at least 7 hours every night. The next day you can still exercise (light to moderate) if you have the energy, eat well too. Then go to bed early and your brain will probably request 10-12 hours of sleep that night. It first recovers deep sleep then after 3-4 days, your brain will recover rem sleep. Sleep should never be negotiable. It's a high price to pay when we don't sleep well, waste time on our phones, or go to bed late. Many mental and physical disorders come from sleep deprivation. Even if your diet is healthy and you're exercising, when you don't sleep well your health won't be good. There's a book called "Why we sleep" by Matt Walker. I highly suggest the read. It will blow your mind. I'm loving every page of it.

One thing that seldom gets examined is how many calories Blue Zone people eat. I would love to find some research on that aspect. One hears quite often how reducing caloric intake slows metabolism. Well, there is ample research that shows that when we slow our metabolism, we also slow the aging process. This has me intrigued and I am currently searching to see if there is a connection.

In the "Nutrition for the Japanese elderly" study they found something else: Abstract. 1. Nutrient intakes in 94 Japanese centenarians investigated between 1972 and 1973 showed a higher proportion of animal protein to total proteins than in contemporary average Japanese. Average Japanese had slightly higher fat intake than centenarians as percentage of total energy (arround 19.8 vs 18%), but centenarians had higher percentage of energy from protein than average Japanese (16.5% vs 14.6%), and proportion of animal protein to total protein was higher among centenarians (58% vs 48%). "As a source of animal protein, meat was more common in the Okinawa sample whereas fish was more common in tje Akita sample". "Histories of stroke, myocardial infarction, and fractures were more common in the Akita sample. The Akita sample was more hypertensive.

I do feel if people can make pure cheese from pure milk at home that would be better. I feel same with white butter Indians used to eat before colonization. But I must say the way to eat it was not in combination with other unhealthy things of today on top of other heavy things. I want to reduce rice with millets too. But cheese in India today is used on top of other heavy food items. Therefore I feel that combination makes a lot of difference too. White butter was good if people can eat it in right way by itself without mixing things. Today in India cheese can not be considered healthy form because of how they are eating. They are neither getting benefit of cheese or of that other heavy food. I drink whole milk spaced few hours after meal because I know milk is heavy because I know within that I am now giving my body space and time to extract every positivity from that milk. And like you said time is critical too.

The Adventists have been preaching for over a century that cheese is not healthy!!! Not sure where you got that they eat a lot of cheese. That's just inconsistent with their health message. I've been studying it for over 2 decades. Another thing they do to stay healthy and I highly recommend that as well, is to avoid any alcohol, caffeine, or unclean meat such as pork, certain fish, duck, rabbit, or pork, among others. I'm surprised that even after studying them in Loma Linda for a long time you still suggest those foods/drinks in your food list and they're just not healthy.

Perhaps cheese should be from A2 milk, but not common cheese from supermarkets. If I eat goat, sheep cheese and even common supermarket cheese, my eyes itch.

Everything was at 'profound' level until last 60 seconds, "We're not good at converting fat into sugars" !!??... What kinda fats? like all that crap adulterated vegetable oil? (for one point!) i.e. Whoa there! And... If you're fat, you have ZERO 'fat to sugar' enzymes, "adapting" is exactly how long it takes gut biome to "populate" those enzymes. That was VERY suss, contradictory, even 'sly'... he was hiding /shying away from something... Doc, I think you got some 'splaining to do... o.O~)?
