The system is failing as a result of both government and federal policy. In the next days, the banking crisis would have to be epic and gigantic for the FED to decide not to raise interest rates. This won't happen; an increase and a crash are coming. There will be more negative portfolios this 2nd half of 2024 with markets tumbling, soaring inflation, and banks going out of business. My concern is how can the rapid interest-rate hike be of favor to a value investor, or is it better avoiding stocks for a while?
@StacieBMui

Just ''buy the dip'' man. In the long term it will payoff. High interest rates usually mean lower stock prices, however investors should be cautious of the bull run, its best you connect with a well-qualified adviser to meet your growth goals and avoid blunder

Very true, you can be passively involved in the markets and still amass wealth-gains using an investment advisor. I first dabbled in stocks late 2019, just before the pandemic, and that same year gained over 150% with no prior investing experience, basically all I was doing was following directions of my advisor. We are working on a retirement ballpark of $3m and I’m certain my goal isn’t farfetched after subsequent investments and tremendous returns so far.

We hear the same sentiments in Australia. But isn't this situation really just a function of the average American believing the BS they are fed, and voting accordingly for "small government", lower tax, and sitting idly by while the oligarchy controls government policy? Isn't this simply the result of sheer apathy on behalf of the American people? For example, the Occupy Movement fizzled out in just a few weeks. You'll never get a fair go unless you demand. Get off your asses America, and fight. Otherwise you'll be slaves, and you'll deserve it.

Also the relief checks where the money was spent on what? Rent, energy, food? these aren't optional luxuries. The rich talking heads seem incapable of telling the difference between discretionary & non-discretionary expense & it shows. The American economy runs on poverty, or at least the constant threat of it. Americans like their goods cheap and their services plentiful and the two of them, together, require a sprawling labor force willing to work tough jobs at crummy wages. On the right, the barest glimmer of worker power is treated as a policy emergency, and the whip of poverty, not the lure of higher wages, is the appropriate response.

Exactly. It's a game for them now. Make the quarterly report one nickle bigger at a vast cost to human lives. One huge thing that got missed was the guy saying about how people got too much money with the stimulus checks & that's what causes inflation. That gives a peek into their thought process. If one of their core beliefs is people having money is bad for the economy, then that is the smoking gun motivation for why they always do everything they can to keep the working class wages down. Simply, poverty for us = money for them. There's your Great and Powerful Oz behind the curtain of unrestrained capitalism.

Raise the minimum wage = higher cost of labor=higher cost of goods=higher cost of living=The reason they give every 4 years for why you must vote for them to raise the minimum wage. It's an endless vote generating ponzi scheme. All they have to do is figure out a new minimum wage that will inflate things to that uncomfortable point by the next election cycle, and trust that most people don't pay attention long enough to realize they've ended up where they started.

During the pandemic I had to work a 2nd job to make things work. I ran the drum shop at the Guitar Center, oh and by the way, the Guitar Center had to file bankruptcy because they had their most profitable year EVER. I left the company in June because they could no longer afford to pay their full time employees, who are making minimum wage, benefits and therefore made everybody part time. I left because some guys had kids that they needed to support while I only have myself and already had a regular job that I worked 12 hours a day at a non livable wage, along with my 5 hour day, 3 day a week minimum wage job at the GC. And I only received one of the 3 Covid relief checks with zero explanation as to why, and I never missed a single days work during the pandemic. I made 2 miserable credit card payments, 2 weeks late and was reported to the credit bureau each time. Corporations made record profits during the pandemic and those who suffered a loss, are now making the consumers pay for it.

Its not that hard to think about. Money is created when money is loaned out from banks and the bank collects interest. Before the banks got to borrow the money for basically free, so they were incentivized to loan put as much as they could. They loaned out too much causing high inflation. The solution is to raise interest rates so that less money is loaned out causing money growth to slow to a more standard inflation rate.
@pritapp788
@pritapp788 Жыл бұрын
@@MrKG204 No, you seem to have a hard time understanding that this spell of high inflation was caused by surging energy prices, not interest rates. @Pritish Appadoo let's assume what you say is true, and it probably is to some degree. You didn't refute any part of the logic I laid out. I've taken economic courses, I've been following housing prices as I'm trying to buy a house, and the #1 cause in that industry and a lot of other industries is the monetary policies of the fed. And its well known that the fed really has 1 tool to fight inflation, and that is to raise interest rates Or just keep attacking me and saying that I'm wrong without discrediting my argument
@Kyle_P
@Kyle_P Жыл бұрын
It doesn’t quite work like that. Raising interest rates doesn’t directly increase costs, it increases the cost of borrowing money. That affects some goods like cars but it shouldn’t change most of your other purchases unless you regularly let things ride on credit. Other than that, it mostly affects some long-term savings stuff that I don’t think most people are complaining about since that would require having savings. The thinking is that by making credit cost more, you can tamp down on how much spending people are doing. In reality, people who need to buy things on credit are sadly still going to have to do so and make ends meet, while the others who have too much money don’t really care. It only slows a small percentage of consumers (the shrinking middle class) from making large purchases.
@andersonandrighi4539
@andersonandrighi4539 Жыл бұрын
@@Kyle_P it does affect every day itens because you might not buy them through credit but they are produced through credit. Think of agricultural credit to produce meat in a chicken farm or a trucking company that delivers good and it is a small regional operation, mostly funded through life saving and a small inheritance. In that sense a higher interest rate is a form to reduce consumption while making the 2% richer. There were always different solutions that were not written on ortodox school of economics such as subsidizing energy, mostly gas and diesel. And before you say that it is too expensive and can't be done, ethanol is subsidized in order to appease voters in the corn belt. The issue has always been neoliberalism. Their playbook was and is not made for the working class. Without taxes on the wealthiest individuals and corporations. Without unions and without social policies they can regress society to late XIX standards. Workers being forced/coerced to work way above the 8 hours... Done! Workers not having rights... Done! Gig economy supporting more people... Done! Pay gap between women and man... Done! Children working at jobs like adults. It is on the way.

Capitalism literally requires infinite growth in order to sustain itself, and for people to keep spending money they don't have. And when they do exactly that, we're told they need to be restrained with lower wages and more layoffs. The worst part is, there's so many American voters listening to this crap and nodding in agreement. "Hm, yes, we're getting paid too much. The only way groceries will get cheaper is if more of my neighbors get pay cuts or get fired. But not me, though. It'll have to be others. I need my money."

@@jsegovia I have to be honest. There are times I wish I was a conservative. you folks see the world so simply. One thing can cause a myriad of effects in MAGA world. I will give you credit for not saying Wokeness is the problem. In reality interest rates can have an effect, but we have had rising interest rates up till this quarter and profits were up. The reasons for the stock market to be down can vary, and various factors can cause it. Some reasons could be based on economic indicators such as rising interest rates, high inflation, or a recession. Political uncertainty, natural disasters, or a crisis in a specific industry could also cause it. Keep in mind the highest interest rate in US history was in 1980 and was 21.5%. 6% does not sound so bad now does it? Also for those with money in savings it's a bonus because now you actually get a return on savings.

I think a major problem was giving people making $300 a week, for example, an extra $600 a week on top of regular unemployment during the pandemic. Why would you go back to work when you could make an extra $500 a week, based on Nevada's unemployment setup, by NOT working. It was not "The Great Resignation" when 60-70% of people on unemployment were making more than they were while working. I knew this was coming a few years ago when the government started handing out unemployment checks like candy. I know of a college student who put away $15,000 in 9 months while on unemployment, and also an acquaintance who was working part-time, but since he was making a few hundred dollars less a week, also got the $600 a week for over a year. The economy got way out of sorts because the government, mostly ran by lawyers. who create nothing, don't understand how to run a business that isn't a law firm. Paying people to not work causes major financial problems that most people in this comments section do not seem to understand.

This happens every recession and anytime something legitimately impacts the cost of running a business. They ask the general population to bear the brunt of it, and then they artificially increase the brunt. And then the lower and middle class get blamed if they complain for not pulling their weight. Meanwhile businesses ask us to pay $5 more for a product that costs $0.50 more to create. Businesses want to pay us less because "times are tough" and charge us more and we just put up with it. I don't see any way we beat this without unions. They'll do the homework and say "hey our company can actually afford to pay us more than what they say." The stock market is a complex system that is influenced by a variety of factors, including economic indicators, political events, and global trends. The relationship between policies and the stock market can be complex and multifaceted, and it can take time for the full effects of policies to be reflected in market trends. Or are you intentionally acting stupid? *Do you know what ethics is??* Your comment kind of implies that ethics is something of an alien, possibly fictional, concept in your life. *"what is good and ethical for one is harmful to another"* YES exactly the ethics board is there to *prevent the harm.* It's an independent group that exists to ensure that people aren't harmed for the greater good. Usually comes up in health care, perhaps most notably to check that no one is doing unethical tests on humans even if those unethical human tests would be good for research. It's not really that uncommon for large organisations to have some kind of ethics advisory board and it wouldn't be that hard to adapt the function for economists. Obviously this kind of committee is more damage reduction than damage prevention, but a little is better than nothing.

That store buys 100 dollars of supplies from their supplier. That supplier buys 100 dollars of necessities for their business. That 100 dollar you made and spent created 300 dollars of value. You didn't get the two other federal checks? California issued some of it's own ... from federal money of course. Which came to $3200 not counting any state ones. and it says more than 476 million payments went out. So will round it to 480 though it was likely more. Math says about $1,536,000,000,000 went out. To make it easier to read that is $1.5 Trillion. Yes that did have some impact on top of other issues related to lockdowns much which could have been avoided.

Most of the major businesses selling goods at inflated prices are making record profits, so reduced competition is probably one of the leading causes. The relief checks were cautioned from the start of covid that they might have a big effect. Supply also had a major effect. Prices jumped up because of production was shut down. Production shutting down caused shipping costs to be insane. I have a game store and heard from small game publishers how insanely high they went. It made games mostly jump up across the board. though a few companies managed to not bump things up but very few. The ones that didn't I think wasn't having things produced in China. And that isn't many. Supply and demand is a factor for sure.

@@Goredbirds82 inflation is a problem which cannot be solved. Once it gains a foothold it becomes a permanent feature of the landscape. It starts with a single snowball, and as the snowball increases in size it picks up momentum until it becomes an avalanche. If you ask A why they increased their prices, A will tell you that it's because their suppliers, B and C, increased their prices. B and C, when asked, will say because D, E, and F increased prices and so on ad infinitum. You will never arrive at a satisfying explanation for who started it. Furthermore, inflation can never be truly stopped or it's effects mitigated. Prices never ever go back down. You may blame "greed" all you want but how to remedy this seemingly innate human trait? Anyone have any bright ideas? I'm all ears...

Just spitballing here, but the average CEO's pay is 400 times that of the average worker in the U.S., so how about we start by reducing CEO pay to being the same as that of the average worker. Seems like that would save around 399 workers' jobs at the average company, and considerably more if extended to the rest of the senior executive staff as well. Might be something worth looking into.

My best friend is an insurance lawyer and her husband is a computer engineer. They bought a small house less than a year ago, and have had two interest rate hikes since taking out their mortgage. One more hike will make it impossible for them to pay the bills. We went out the other night and door cover for the show we were going to was cash only, and she didn't have enough cash in her bank account to withdraw the cover. She's relying on credit at the moment. It's frustrating that two highly paid professionals who have worked their asses off for the last 10+ years can barely afford to live. As for me, I have a university degree and 6 years of managerial experience and I doubt my salary will ever go over 65k (it's 60k right now), which is higher than minimum wage but barely on par with what most people consider a living wage. I had to declare insolvency last year, and although it's helping me get out of crushing debt from being unemployed for a year during covid, I'll probably be living with multiple roommates for most or the rest of my life.
