They don't pay their staff?? And yes, here in my country tips are given when the service and food is beyond satisfying and sometimes tips also boost the workers and establishments confidence in assuring that they did good jobs.

You actually use tips in the original way in the US. In Swedish it's called 'dricks', which literally means 'for drinks'. It was originally for waiters etc to be able to buy some shots of booze, because their pay was so meager. Of course in Scandinavia no one really *needs* tips anymore.

They should forbid tipping since it's a corruptive system. If you have more money to tip you get better services than others that might be less fortunate. The price of the product should be the same for everybody. The market will adjust and restaurants will just be unable to find anybody to hire if they don't pay enough. The menu prices won't go up as much as 30% because of it and more efficient restaurants that spend less on labor costs per meal served due to optimization will be able to offer you a better deal, plus it will be easier to compare deals between different options. If it's so costly for them to bring the food to your table they could also give you the option to pay less to pick up the food with them like we do at McDonald's. Problem solved, for everybody.

Okay, you get to work on making that happen, and meanwhile maybe you could give a tip every now and then.

What's crazier is how little most restaurants in the US pay servers. Some have come around to paying their staff a decent wage. I wish more here did. (Which does not excuse servers being rude and confrontational if they're not tipped, or not tipped as generously as they hoped.)

Like working in low paying jobs The wal mart here , like every other damn business after things are opening back up from covid lockdown, is putting up Hiring ads even inside the store Its for 12 dollars The Aldi's and Target that aren't that far away, pay 16.50 at MINIMUM. The grocery nearby is paying 18.50 on weekends on top of sign on bonus of 1800. If you're choosing low paying jobs where the economy is opening back up again, you either live in a shitty neighborhood or you aren't looking more than 1 or 2 places to apply. Asian parents tell us kids to apply to literally 100 schools and/or job locations. You have to TRY to do your best if you WANT the BEST LIFE. Do. There is no try.

Makes me think we should do that with our restaurants: Have it be where you choose to get your own drinks and pick up your food from the kitchen, but pay no fee (tip), or where you can opt in for a waitress, but pay extra for the service. Hm mm mmm....

They are able to get away with it because we still tip and people still work in restaurants....If people stood up for what they believed in instead of going along with terrible practices, companies wouldnt be able to do this stuff because they would be put out of business...

It really is. The federal minimum wage for waiters is $2.15. I don't know why anyone would take the job. I would rather stay unemployed than have to rely on hounding customers for hand-outs. I'm not usually one to say this, but if you're having to panhandle at work, you need to get a better job.

It's honestly stupid that it somehow became a tradition in north america, i still can't wrap my head around it even though i've lived here for over a year alr, and it's not like their food is cheaper than back home anyways, if anything it's more expensive, and i have to pay extra for tips

if this were a video game, tipping incentivizes players to seek out and serve customers instead of being slow paced and passing the buck to some other co-worker. At the cost of annoying customers. In my perspective, America should instead have the employers give the tipping incentive instead of the customers. The only problem with that is instead of annoying customers, now someone in management is gonna get annoyed keeping track of score in order to give the proper bonus rewards to players who work harder.

This is just a misconception. I live in Germany & the servers are also underpaid, but people are just stingy tippers based on this idea that “only the US underpays wait staff” & “we don’t need to tip here in Germany”. I found it similar in the Netherlands. Servers are chronically underpaid and struggling, and people are always pretending it’s “only like that in the US” instead of just giving a reasonable tip to underpaid workers. It’s really not that difficult.

You don’t have to give a massive tip, but I would say 3-5€ would be fair for a 20€ meal. 50 cents is just cruel, why be so goddamn stingy?

@@elin_ I believe in certain places restaurants can still pay less than $3 per hour. Also, servers are expected to give a certain percentage of tips to the cooks, bussers, and dishwashers who actually make more than minimum wage. And, and, they have to clean bathrooms, vacuum floors, etc.

Maybe the woman was such a pain because she saw that they weren't bringing in customers, so she was aggrieved to even pay out enough to make for minimum wage. She wanted to squeeze out every cent's worth from labor. The cook was a Chinese man who could not speak English, but he made very authentic dishes. The owner hired me because I'd worked in restaurants before, and I got the idea that she was trying to figure out the American world of business, but she never asked for any advice. Honestly, she should have let her husband deal with the staff because he was more easygoing and less exacting. I think the woman changed a bit over time and became more American in her thinking when it came to how she treated customers and workers because they did eventually buy a bigger location. She always came across as seeing herself "above" us, in more than just that of manager over labor. I couldn't figure out if it was all cultural. Anyway...I didn't mean to write an essay. Nah, it has a longer history than that, at least 300 years. It doesn't really has anything to do with wage too. Part of the price you paid for your food is going into the salary of the staff anyway, it doesn't matter if the staff are paid by their employer or the customers. The main reason is they can hide the price on the menu, like a tactic to draw in more customers. However, I doubt if Capitalism love this idea, in places more capitalistic than the US, like Hong Kong and Singapore, tipping was not a thing. It's an inefficient way of living.

Thats the key. If you say something like "This is for you." And slide them their tip right at the start, you'll probably guarantee that they'll be zipping around for you to make sure your stuff comes out faster.

Tipping is "mandatory" because in the US waiters get paid way below the minimal wage. If you complain about tipping - campaign so that waiters get paid fairly. So that instead of it being an optional "tip", it is properly included in the check as part of what you have to pay for the food. How many of you are willing to do that though, hm?
