The Spanish GP has always been a bit of a tough race for those looking for an exciting spectacle. Why is Barcelona constantly stuck in this rut? There are two factors really: over-testing and circuit characteristics.

There's a simple fix to solve the problems related to the layout of this track: make the car run the opposite way. I don't know why nobody thinks about this solution, but if you look at the nature of the corners and the braking zones, running on this circuit counterclockwise would give formula 1 cars way more opportunities to attempt overtakes, especially because most of the long fast corners would arrive AFTER the straights, which means that they would become partially mild-deceleration and partially mild-acceleration zones. There will still be some hard braking zones and some pure high speed corners, but they will become less impactful on the following cars, because the time loss on these sections would not be multiplied by the long straights after (if you start a long straight slower than the preceding car, you end up loosing a lot of time). Moreover, the (currently) first corner (Elf curve) would become an extremely interesting attack zone, similar to certain sections of the Barhain track, as well as the (currently) second last corner (chicane Racc), which would become a very tricky braking point after the cars would clear the Caixa curve extremely close each other.

The reason why "nobody has thought about it" is because of safety. The run of areas are designed with the race direction in mind. The current turns: 1, 2, 6, 8, 11, 15 would all have too small run off areas....

F2 and F3 are less aero dependent. Hence, they are less affected by the dirty air around Barcelona, so can race more closely. Racing is generally a balance between quantiry and quality of overtaking. F1 from 2011-16 had the highest levels of overtaking but most were simple DRS passes on the straights. Early 2000s cars and modern cars have far fewer overtakes but can pull off moves like Alonso around Schumacher at 130R. Finding a balance somewhere in between would be ideal but it is very tricky to manage.

@Ivan Martin Jimenez I am sorry but that ain't the problem. So what, you expect Mercedes to stop operating at its best just because you don't like it. Ferrari has huge amounts of money, maybe even more than Mercedes, but look at where they are. Instead of blaming the team that is efficient and has done everything right, maybe start blaming the ones who aren't on par with them when they should.

Barcelona has always been shit for overtaking though. Even before the Mercedes domination, before the aero rules changes. Ever since it's been on the F1 calendar it has produced mostly boring races under several different eras of Aero rules, engine rules, completely different tyre rules, different teams winning. It's just the nature of the track that makes overtaking very difficult.

It's kinda funny that approximately the same physics influences the excitement of a race where high speed cornering is involved, as what limits airport capacity. The primary factor in how close together two aircraft can take off, is wake turbulence meaning the following aircraft is at high risk of crashing if it takes off too soon after an aircraft in front. This leads to the counter-intuitive situation where it's more efficient to let the small, low capacity aircraft take off first, rather than the big, high capacity heavy ones. Because the large aircraft have much larger wake turbulence, and the smaller ones are much more vulnerable to the dangers of it. So the gap between a small aircraft and a large one can be much smaller if the small one goes first than if the large one does. So it looks like the tiny 'selfish' individual planes get special treatment at busy airports, but in reality this happens because it's more efficient for everyone...

go to the FIA website and download the list of FIA certified tracks, look at the "Grade 1" section. There's your choices for the GP tracks as they sit now. A track can work on various safety and performance measures to make "grade 1" level license, but you also have to take a look at the facilities and access. For example, Watkins Glen in central New York state in the USA (currently FIA Grade 2) used to be the home of the US GP many moons ago. It could achieve the technical improvements to score a Grade 1 license if given enough money. BUT, it is out in the boonies; the logistics of teams, F1/FIA staff, and even the fan volume of modern GP's is just WAY beyond the local infrastructure. So, use that to help guide your guesses on where the replacement (if it happens) may be. (Incidentally, for this reason, I bet you will see the USGP get renewed in Austin, even if FIA has to agree to some non-standard concessions. Cause there really isn't a viable alternative in the USA.)

I think it's too complicated to have Drs and downforce increase system on cars . This could work on corners like the spoon corner at suzuka and barcelonas turn 3. What are your thoughts on this bear?

For very short period of time car behind could follow close but tyre temperature would skyrocket quickly together with extensive tyre wear. Pretty much - one lap max to try to overtake, if not - fall behind few seconds and do clear stint and try again after 30 minutes. Funny that tracks that are less suitable for overtakes, gives better feeling for driving and vice versa.

I got idea how to improve overtaking but i'm not 100% sure it may work out and would delighted if you said what you think. It's basicly about changing the "source" of gril from aero to tires. Let's make with way less downforce which would allow drives to cope with dirty air. Also benefits from slipstream and DRS would be reduced, so they will be more likely to look for moves in more specific places (like Turn 8 in Catalunya). To keep cars as quick as they are FIA should ask Pirelli to reproject the tires so they would be super grippy. If they would be also projected to hit the cliff no later than 50% of race distance on hardest copmpound it will force teams to at leats 2 stops. 3 stops also would be posibble as car on fresh tires wouldn't be hold down behind other cars. For me it's the best way which could make F1 great again

One of the greatest Motogp races ever happened in Barcelona. Valentino Rossi vs Jorge Lorenzo 2009 if you f1 fans are looking for a truly fantastic race on this track I recommend searching that race. There was also a lot of meaning behind the race since it was two teammates on the same bike fighting for the title

The problem is the last chicane. If they found a way to modify so that you can carry speed through to the pit straight better. It would make it way easier to overtake. Find a way to modify it or get rid of it. That would make it so much better

The problem is not the track but the reliance on down force. Reduce or remove the wings and make the car designers focus on mechanical grip. Look at go-karts and how close and exciting they are to watch.

So, Barcelona could make t1 a sweeping right hander that leads into a sudden kink as you find yourself in what would normally be t3, the lap goes on as usual until you get to turn 9, you go straight on, onto the runoff and then it’s that runoff’s right hander, on to the straight than onto the outside version of the next corner and take the old chicane to finish your lap

I think pre-season testing should be held at non-championship circuit like Jerez or Valencia (Riccardo Tormo). If the Spanish GP is droped (which seems unlikely given the latest news) or it's moved elsewhere (there were plans for that before - Valencia cough, cough) I think Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will remain the primary testing ground. I think Riccardo Tormo should be the new pre-season testing venue Speaking of Zandvoort - this circuit in its current form is nothing like the one from 1985, when the Dutch GP was last held. The cars also evolved. But the problem is this - The Netherlands does not have a suitable track for modern F1 as Assen, the other Dutch track, is more suitable for motorcycles and any layout changes will need to be approved by the FIM. Another street race (around either Amsterdam or Rotterdam) is not going to be welcomed warmly as if F1 didn't have enough street circuits (or tracks that use normal road network like Melbourne, Montreal and Sochi) already with the all-new Hanoi Street Circuit in Vietnam. Also I think the Dutch GP could be alternating with the German GP at Hockenheim. Mexico is also on the chop given the limited state support for the race recently.

Ever since the start of the F1 races, one or two teams dominated the races. From Maserati and Ferrari, Lotus, Tyrell, McLaren, Williams, Red Bull and now Mercedes. Only drastic rulechanges will break that streak (as we have seen in the past) and will provide us with one or two other teams that will dominate. This can only change if the FIA makes huge changes that benefit the lower ranked teams much more then the higher ranked teams. One idea: a maximum number of laps for testing, with the lowest amount for the last years champion and the most for the lowest in previous championship. So for example: in 2019 Mercedes would get 100 laps, and Williams 1000. There are a lot of other ideas on how to make the playing field more even for teams. To make races more exciting, there are also a lot of ideas. Most come down to changes to the tracks and reducing dirty air. Ons example is to extemely simplify the front and rear wing. One thought that I had is to drastically reduce the size of the cars. It reduces drag and dirty air. It allows for more space of the cars to overtake in corners (less car, more room) and it also provides high level engineering, as smaller cars are more difficult to make and fast and safe. Btw, I got this idea after seeing a vid that compared the sizes of F1 cars throughout the decades. But, all the ideas, all the wishes, all the desires to change F1 into something less expensive and more spectacular while keeping the core values like the high level of engineering and being the king of motorsport, all of that wont matter. Ferrari will veto any change that does not favor them, or threaten to leave the F1. Mercedes does the same. RedBull pumps so much money iinto their two teams, that Liberty Media wont propose any changes that will make the teams unhappy, even when it is for the good of the sport. Money rules, and the biggest spenders want to keep it as it is: rolling advertisement for their products.

Would it be viable and would it make sense if, on the race weekend, they reversed the track? That would allow for a medium-speed turn onto the pit straight, and a low-speed turn onto the back straight. This would also make the testing data less applicable for setting up the cars come race weekend.

I mean, I guess that when they say they find it fun to drive, that's probably true: it looks like a banger of a circuit to drive around, with all the flowing corners and bankings and what not. But on the racing part, that's probably a bit less exciting.

How about making split tracks on part of the track where the cars could go left or right and later merge with both sides needing about the same time. That would make overtaking for the faster car easier. No dirty air.

I don't think in the current layout the final corner is the real problem for overtaking. In the previous configuration it was, but now it's that stupid chicane. The main problem in this race was low tire degradation and high physical wear, forcing drivers to stop multiple times for tires without actually getting much of a performance advantage in return. The 2011, 2012 and 2013 events were quite good, so this track can produce interesting races if tire degradation is high.

The last corner has been flat in the dry for almost every single F1 car that has set a foot on Barcelona's "new" layout, including turds like 2009 ones. Only in 2014 they lifted just a bit. It's not aero limited, at all. The only thing that can make you lift is cold or destroyed rear tyres, it's just a curved traction zone mate. Following another car through there is faster if anything but the concertina effect makes that hard unless you are way faster than the car ahead overall and have way better traction.
What if we can F1 2019 backwards? (Hint: nonsense)
