Why can't F1 race when it's very wet?

When the rain storms come, sessions get delayed, races get red flagged and we all wonder - why do we even have wet tyres if we can't go racing?

Just to give the power of water some context, a few years ago I was working In a bus garage. During a huge storm bus services had been stopped due to high flood waters, but it was nearing the end of the day and we were aware that a lot of people were stranded as most of the rain and flood water had arrived during the day whils people were out and about, a number of us took the highest capacity single deck busses we (wright commanders) had and headed out across north wales, we had no assigned routes, we were just given areas to cover and told to go wherever was necessary to get people home. That day I discovered that if you drive a Fully laden bus into flood water, even at walking pace, it will pull a wheelie. The sheer force of the water under the front of the bus, weighing about 10 tons, with about 2 tons of humans onboard, and the front wheels lifted about a foot of the road, fortunately, at about 5mph, lifting the throttle brought the wheels back down, but it's a very strange feeling when the steering go's light and you lift up into the air, remember a bus driver sits ahead of the front wheels.

I've had to travel in similarly bad conditions as a passenger, but unexpected heavy snow instead of rain. I was out in the cold, wet snow for like 20-30 minutes, where buses normally come every 8, when one of the ~6 people waiting informed us that the buses had all been canceled. While everyone was taking their time figuring out what to do, a bus finally came, at a snail's pace. It was jam packed, but at least it wasn't as cold, and it was going somewhere. Sliding all over the place, it took about an hour and a half for it to arrive at the train station. Well, close to the train station, as there was a huge traffic jam of buses in front of it. It took another two hours or so for the jam packed train to leave, and about an hour after that I was home. The whole trip took 5-6 hours where it normally takes about an hour, and I was standing for a lot of it, but if it weren't for bus drivers like you, I wouldn't have gotten home at all that day. So, thank you on behalf of all of the people you got home to their comfy beds.

The dificulty is with a video concept like that is most teams speak in code, so you need to know the code before you can make content about it, most of the stuff is shorthand for a series of pre discussed and memorised condidtions. Some of it is easy to work out "plan B" is obviously their alternate race strategy. The most famous phase we know about is "multi 2-1" Red Bulls code for hold station, don't fight, car two in front of car one, but If we didn't know the meaning it could be anything. Multi is normally to do with the multifunction display and 2-1 would be a position on that display, unless we knew all the menu options its hard to do deep analysis of it... Its the same for engine modes or strat modes, the drivers know what it means because the memorise a literal book of commands, but for an outside viewer its hard to know exactly what it means, we can normally figure it out, but if its that obvious it might change throughout the season...

Very good video. As a marshal, we take bad weather VERY seriously. One thing you you did forget to mention from a marshaling point of view is that if visibility is bad enough that you can't see the previous or next station, the drivers can't either and you would have to stop the race. Another reason we have this rule is if the radios or landlines go down. We can still "talk" with another station using hand signals but in heavy rain? forget it.

@StarkRaven59
@StarkRaven59 3 жыл бұрын
Risk reduction is generally beneficial. If you run a race where/when it's least likely to be rained out, you reduce the chance of not satisfying teams, sponsors, and spectators. Saying "we can't race today" is a PR nightmare. As for the races in the desert, I'm more willing to blame massive piles of money than a particular fear of rain.

If it isnt safe enough for the helicopter to take off and get to the hospital, it is not safe enough to race. Also have to remember in the 90s cars would have a wet setup in bad whether. Whereas today's cars use the same setup in the dry as the rain. So cars run much closer to the ground than in the 90s in the rain and the chance for aquaplaning are much greater..

As a club-level marshal, other things to consider are visibility from station to station. We would stop racing if you couldn't see the next marshal station through the fog/rain. Lightning in the area was also a stopping point because we were on land line radios. It's also not advisable to race in the remnants of a hurricane, due to the wind in addition to the rain.

It's happened to me and despite it being about 35 years ago, I have never forgotten the terror (I'd not long passed my test!). I don't want to see cars heading towards 200 mph or even 200 kph in such conditions. As ever, beautifully explained, Stuart. Thank you.

The fistrule of rainraces is that you need to go 90 a 100% on the trottle on the straights and if you won't be able to do that: well than it's to wet to race. For the corners it's the same: Grip from the tarmac vs grip from the aerospeed, you can perfectly have optimal grip in some wet tarmacs but if you drive to slow for the corner than you will spin either.

I came home from Download Festival 2011 on the Monday after the Canadian Grand Prix had been on the day before. This was the days when it was broadcast on the BBC and fortunately on iPlayer to catch-up TV on demand. Somehow I managed to navigate my way to the replay of the race without finding out whom had won, nor any spoilers about the race. The program was so long and there was a 4-hour limit to the length of iPlayer programs, so I had to go back on to the website and navigate my way onto another listing for the race where the most amazing conclusion of any race ever was shown. I've since tried to re-watch, red flags, DC bird-watching and all. But it just wasn't the same. Needless to say watching Seb screw up on the last lap and Jenson Button fight his way from just about dead last to take the win will stand out as one of my favourite races of all time.

@@animeholictops1225 It actually really frustrates me that so much of the F1 community is just a toxic cesspit. I love the sport and want to talk about it with people, but so often its just idiots shouting idiotic things... Im glad I have a Discord server where I can talk F1 and its mostly toxic free...

I remember a few years (maybe about 10) When I went to see British Superbikes at Thruxton. It started raining during the day and a support race was red flagged after what must have been about half the grid went down. Bearing in mind this is motorbike racing where the rider doesnt have a carbon fiber tub to protect them.

Hey Chain! Great video again. Would you care to elaborate on what exactly the distinction between no1 and no2 driver entails other than direct team orders? If money is not an issue, what does it mean practically when a team decides "this will be my first driver, this will be my second"? Is the "first driver" status something that is given or gained after all? I have the impression that this is a distinction ascribed mostly by us, the fans, rather than the teams a priori. I am thinking about teams like Mercedes or Renault or McLarren.

How much water did the Michelin and Bridgestone tyres drain per second? I remember back in 2005/2006 watching F1 in the rain and when they where following a car you couldn't even see the driver's helmet in the on-board. I wonder, the spray back then was huge and now is not even close to that. Could the pirrelli tyres be more effective or what are the differences between these and the old rain tyres? I'm also pro safety first but as I said back then they raced and the spray was huge and they still were able to drive, but the cars were different right?

Now you have me stuck in a thought-- okay, the Wets are a larger diameter which raises the car up. So the circumference is increased by 3 times the diameter change. What systems on the car are impacted? On the average street car that will at minimum make the speedometer read incorrectly. But with a precision tuned F1 car, what is impacted? Gearing, aerodynamics, etc. Is the tech so digital now that it is simply a button on the steering wheel to adapt? The handling must feel seriously foreign to the ranges that drivers are used to.

I always thought there is some kind of emergency centre in each track, never thought about bringing the heli. Also, what I always thought might cause the race to be stopped is if the water gets too high because of how low F1 cars are if the water level is too high they're essentially boating which you have mentioned lol.
