This conversation is a reminder that fundamentals are important, and even MORE so if using lower end materials, because they are most likely to use mixtures and substitutions for pigments. You have to know what you are working with in watercolor. Every pigment has it's own set of characteristics. If you have a decent grasp on those, everything becomes so much easier, especially color mixing... and like it or not watercolor mixes, whether its on the palette or on the paper. Single pigments are by far the simplest to use, and you can 100% get them on the cheap.. but you need to know what to look for. You also need to know what is in typical convenience (premixed) colors so you know how they will react when used. For example I've seen payne's grey made up of ultramarine and black... and I've seen it made with phthalo and black (completely different performance from hue, to staining, to granulation)... and I've seen it mixed with up to four pigments (who knows what will happen at that point). Same with colors that are not typically convenience mixes... I was looking at a new to me brand recently who's burnt sienna was actually PR101 and PY42, you would be in for a surprise if you tried to mix that with ultramarine and expected that typical nice neutral grey you get from a PBR7 burnt sienna.

I really like this one and it is on my to do list, I was also very pleased with the little demo you did on patreon letting us see what you were talking about with the blue and green. That’s another valuable part of your patreon , there are so many little hint and tips videos as a background to helping us to achieve better results . For anyone thinking about wanting to get into art in various mediums I can’t recommend your channel enough, there is such a broad range of genres and mediums that we are spoilt for choice and also for every ability level. Thankyou so much for all you do for us

To avoid getting unwanted greens, I usually make sure the first layer is completely dry, but that can leave hard edges if I don't take enough care to soften and blend towards the edge. I hadn't considered different brands mixing characteristics before, that's a great tip. Your painting style is so delicate and carefully stroked, just like your zen-like mastery of pencils. What brush are you using in this demo? It seems to have a wonderful delicate and sharp point to allow such precise application of paint.

I’m here after seeing your video of the black inked oast houses watercolour (subbed after seeing it 😁) and because this video title drew my attention. I’m sure I remember a book title like “Blue and Yellow Don’t Make Green”? Don’t tell me, you’re the author?

@@smoothie77drawingpainting I was right! I’m so glad my memory is still intact lol. Just found it on Amazon. The author of Blue and Yellow Don’t Make Green is Michael Wilcox. I read about the book in an art magazine yonks ago but I didn’t buy it. I might just buy it yet 😄.
