What i like most about Borderlands 1 is probably the atmosphere, to most it is just dreary but that’s why i like it. It’s depressing and the soundtrack really amplifies it. Also it makes the little humour hit so much harder

totally agree. Its funny cause the lack of technical power behind the consoles accidentally made the game more barren and gave you a feeling that you are alone here. I think Borderlands 1 nailed this feeling of coming to a wasteland planet where nobody wants to live and exploring it. After that with Borderlands 2 came much more life into Pandora.

That's what I really liked about too, it felt like you were exploring a wasteland that had a sense of isolation. Also is it just me but did borderlands 1 have a bigger theme corporatism and just really gritty and dark themes which I think is why I too liked about.

thats also why i like bl3s pandora. its a nice mix of the old and new. bl2s is just way too pretty and takes away from the harshness it wants to portray, and is also a big reason to me why the planets in bl3 are so bad- because literally all of the planets biomes are at least partly shown in bl2. xylorgous? windshear waste. eden 6? big hammerlock hunt vibes. gehenna? the dust, and the entirety of bl1. mayas planet (forgot name) is basically just thousand cuts underwater. the only real uniqe one is promethea and even that reminds me of opportunity. itd have been so cool if they stuck with bl1s vibe and instead just added more coloulrful debris. then 3 would be so much better. hell and 2 would lool

Adding to the point of side missions being straight forward, there's less dialogue overall. It's not constantly trying to shove characters in your face 24/7 and makes their lines more impactful when they do speak It also makes it a much more chill experience, which is my favorite part about it

One thing I liked about Borderlands 1 was the Bandits were kinda creepy to me in that game were as other titles just portrayed them as being idiots who just shouted nonsense. I remember the first time I saw a psycho come running at me with that demented laughter I screamed what the fuck. That and when you'd ignite a lance Soldier and you hear that radio static screaming gave me the chills too.

This 100%... That expands to basically the entire game. In BL1 everything had a dark mysterious and threatening undertone. There was plenty of humor and sarcasm... But that actually served to support the threatening creepy vibe...the humor came across as violently deranged and dangerous people who were desperate to survive. Even from the "good guys" nobody felt harmless or goofy more than they felt potentially dangerous...it totally added the wild west every man for himself feeling... In BL2 and beyond it all just became a stupid meme.
@clockworkNate

That's the problem with 2 and 3 in general, everything is played out idioticly for jokes but BL1 was a depressing dust bowl with blood thirsty bandits like some crazy alien wild west. Even the music gave you that dark feeling. Wish it'd go back to that but it likely never will. Atmosphere is ruined by modern bullsht.

Borderlands 1 is my favorite out of the series by far. It is an otherworldly, gritty Western. The music is brilliant, heightening that effect, from the Cage the Elephant opening to the dark, spacey, western guitar and synth. The further you get into the game the more otherworldly and aetherial it becomes. Add to this the bloodbath of psychos and endless weapons, and even the mud palette which I like...

That BL1 aesthetic is like Mad Max meets Trigun which sets just the right visual tone. Also kinda reminiscent of Heavy Metal (1981), Starchaser: The Legend of Orin, and other somewhat obscure and/or unjustly forgotten '80s animated movies of demented do0m.

Yeah, the zombie DLC, while repetitive, has a lot of subtle humor in how it parodies other franchises. Same can be said of Robolution, while it also has some direct borderlands humor and satire. But the Knoxx DLC is just great. Almost every line from the general is worthy of laughs, the ENGORGE ads are good for a chuckle, and the Mr. Shank stuff, while kind of dated, is still good. It doesn't feel like it's trying too hard.

I just started a new playthrough of Borderlands 1 yesterday, and it just doesn't get old. Even by level 15 you often have too many great and interesting guns that it's hard to decide which to use. While future games have more guns that are out there in design, they are often gimmicky and not that useful outside of building around them. BL1 just feels consistent and smooth difficulty wise.

Forget being forgotten by a newer generation of gamers BL1 is very over shadowed by bl2 to me. As some one who played each bl game in the order they have came out and currently I am playing 3 it feels like bl1 never get quite the respect i feel it deserves. Yes bl2 was a massive improvement over 1 in a variety of ways and bought even more people to the series of that there is no doubt. But during my time on twitch I came across so many people who loved 2 or even worse never even touched bl1 despite how much they liked 2. Like for as much as people praise 2 i feel like 1 did the loot aspect and gunplay aspect better then 2 especially when it came to higher lvls and difficulties at least to me. However I just wished more people had given bl1 a chance to see just how far BL2 had come from it and to see why bl1 had so much charm of its own. I was excited for bl1 almost 2 years before it came out due to an article i read in a random game magazine on a counter in a clothes shop where i went to get my high school uniform the summer i started high school. It was such an exciting article with pics of the weapons and got me so excited for the game despite me not having the money to buy the game let alone a ps3 and wondering how i would get to play it. But I did eventually and almost if not 13 years later it is one of my favorite games that I just wish more new fans to the series gave some more attention to.

This was pretty much my game and series. Ever since I saw the Game Informer about this “Diablo with guns” I became obsessed. Because of this game, I wound up playing fewer other games and stuck mostly to open world RPGs like Skyrim. I easily put more hundreds of hours into these than anything else. Yes there’s like no story and everything is deserts and scrapyards but good god there is no other loot system that is as satisfying as this one. I would run builds with legendaries but also those with only epics. I would also run manufacturer loyalty playthroughs with only Maliwan or S&S guns (my two faves).

Plus, you can get shotguns with excellent accuracy, like an S&S or Hyperion "Death" (any prefix) with barrel5. Overall best shotgun I have on my highest Roland (who I named "Apone") is a Lv.69 purple Torgue Hunter's Shotgun and it's not even a Legendary or Unique. It just has high-quality parts, balanced stats, the most accurate barrel (barrel5), and iron sights instead of an unnecessary and insulting scope. It's not even the ultra-best with the parts, but it's beyond excellent. Assault shotguns called "Brute" are also fun, especially the ones made by S&S and Hyperion, the top best being an S&S Brute with barrel4 for "Max Damage" (Carmageddon reference).

Lots to love about BL2, but if I had to pick one thing, it would be the quantity and quality of the DLC. Overall, really great writing, large areas to explore, great loot--they truly felt like they were just part of the game instead of something tacked on. Hate? Replaying the main story over and over. Normal, TVHM, UVHM, OP1-10... just too much of the same thing. I wish that effort had been spent improving other aspects of the game. Great vid! Looking forward to the next one

The game gives you unforgetable experience of going back to the 90's and recall how u felt watching Mad Max 2 and Waterworld. It has post apocalyptic atmosphere, bandits, wild beasts and large open areas. The dirt, rust and dust is everywhere. I was playing with Brick and it was hell of a fun. During covid bullshit I started new campaign with Roland and I enjoy it as well. It is not as good as BL2 which expands every aspect and bring it to next level but to this day it gives you unique experience of loneliness and misery of Pandora. Something about BL1's atmosphere and tone makes we want to do sidequests if for no other reason than to just explore. It's really hard to pin down exactly why I care more about exploring BL1's technically bland vista's and areas vs the more spectacular areas in the later games, but I think it comes down to the mystery invoked. BL1 took itself just a bit more serious, enough to give the world some weight to me. Also with regards to gameplay, I really enjoy BL1's chunky automatic weapons, and how you slowly work through the areas during the story, vs the later game's more linear romp through the story and areas.

I agree 100%. It' also why I like the original angel echo display from the 2009 version, and especially not that big blocky mess they have for the GOTY on steam. Something I notice is that the world does seem legitimately hostile against you. Step outside for even a few moments, there are bandits and monsters and foes. In BL3 I can walk for like a minute straight, and not encounter a foe. Meanwhile BL1 every corner is practically infested with bugs and things. Which makes sense. It didn't imply to be an infested hellhole, it presented itself as one.

I completely disagree about the tone and design of the maps. Borderlands one had these trash heaps of a city and just the rustic tone and music made you feel like this really was a backwater planet in the middle of nowhere. The frozen tundra didn't make sense on a world that looks like it used recycled water, limited supplies, and overall just a horrible place where people go to die. TJ Bhaha when talking about his wife moving to Pandora captures the feel and tone of the game the other games just didn't have. Borderlands had a simple yet diverse range of guns and the general Knoxx DLC made it a farmable looter shooter that skyrocketed its popularity. My biggest complain was limiting pearlescent guns to only being found in the General Knoxx DLC as it esentially made the rest of the game feel pointless for farming. Number two had an amazing story compared with 1 (and its lack of a story) but lost that unique pandora vibe it had so painstakingly built up in the first game. Crazy earl is just "thrown in" even though his role as a trash heap garbage collector doesn't really work in a now floating city. The game just lost that pandora vibe which i wish they would of kept and made borderlands 2 take place on a different planet, which would explain now having ice fields (and thus fresh water) and lush jungles with the backwater tundra planet didn't have.

I love BL1! I think it had the best loot system until 3, and the minimalist story and great atmosphere made it so much better! Also love the dry humor, weapon proficiency, S&S, Crimson Lance enemies, and it really set the stage for an amazing franchise!

Sunny Fyrestone with the slide guitar in the background, T.K. Baha smiling and "looking" at the horizon, making the same jokes about not shooting you cause you're not a skag or "see ya later..." and chuckling cause he's blind ... Few things in video games were as impactful, especially if you play it with your childhood friends when you're a teen. The game even cleverly brings you back to Fyrestone further in the game's story, because they knew how amazing they made that level. It had like a Dark Souls fireplace significance. It had some really cool Mad Max vibes and it grew on me in a way that the later games couldn't, especially the third one. The art is still there and it's beautiful and every NPC and the guns and characters are unique... but the first one was just a masterpiece and one of the greatest games I've ever played. And I recently bought it again because I had missed it so much. I was 17 when I played it with my friends

I am late to tha party, all ym friends LOVED this game but i could never get into it. However somehow now as a 24 year old i have fallen in love with this game. In a time when i quit gaming for ages its a breath of fresh air and i am really enjoying grinding this game out. Just completed the Zombie Island of Dr Ned & have just unlocked half the achievement in the game its so much fun just to binge watch youtube while playing this game for hours on end. So many Side Missions & wepons to unlock and areas to explore. It is easy to understand, Not to difficult to but challenging enough to make me wanna grind to play. It truly reminds me of the good ol days as a teenager grinding late nights to get the next achievement and get to the next level.

I will never forget about borderlands 1 it was the first shooter I’ve ever played I had only played games on Nintendo and banjo and kazzui and crash and my cousin pointed out a game I never noticed I had and we put it in my Xbox and played for hours this was around 2010 or 11 and the game we had was broken so it was in black and white but was still super fun and after that it became our favorite game series I have ever borderlands except the first on my ps4 but that’s on my Xbox 360

Whenever someone asks if I recommend this game I always refer to the first time my friend and I played it. We started the game around 7PM and the first time either of us looked at the time it was 3:30AM. It was so interesting to explore and loot that you literally lose track of time.

man as a kid this game was everything to me the story and aura of the game pulled me in like a magnet, i felt so connected with this game i wanted to live in the borderlands world lol, i didnt have internet at the time so i had to explore and learn everything on my own and i feel like that made it such a better experience instead of looking up guides on youtube to figure out difficult things

A friend introduced me to BL1 about a year after it's release. I had seen a few other friends play it prior to playing myself and thought it looked too cartoony. I was a big Halo fan at the time. After about an hour of split screen play I was hooked. This cartoony first person looter shooter/ rpg/ driving ( with functional passengers) was also friggin hilarious with the npcs and psychos. The first time Scooter said ,"catch a riiiide!" You knew this was something different. I didn't play the dlcs until much later. My favorite thing about BL1 was by far the legendary Pestilent Defiler revolver. I melted more enemies and especially badasses with this gun and still to this day wish they had carried it over to the other games.

Unpopular opinion, I like that legendaries didn’t have a dedicated loot source. I loved the randomness of the loot and how powerful most any weapon could be. I also loved the mad max feel of the bone dry and salty deserts of pandora. I love the Borderlands series, but the first one has a special place for me. :)

I feel like it is worth mentioning that BL1 DLC4 is an absolute masterpiece by itself and is actually one of my favourite DLCs in the entire series. It far outclasses anything else in that game, from tone to general fun, to the final boss which is just so fucking cool. I highly recommend it to anyone, as it just ties up that game so so nicely.

EVERYTHING,down to a melee mordecai, was viable. The balance is amazing and the guns actually feel like guns rather than stat sticks you shoot, characters felt different in playstyle and personality along with the methods to use their abilities, and the humor wasn't "LOL SO RANDOM" that 2 became onward but was actually pretty clever and down to earth.God I miss this game.

Can we just appreciate that Borderlands 1 got so much right and had few annoyances of the later games? I enjoyed the pearlescents that were released and I haven’t stopped trying to get them all. All were decent to massively powerful. Borderlands 2 failed in making pearlescents that could be pretty powerful on their own. Borderlands 2 is way too hard, the only reason why very few pearls may be considered op in Borderlands 2 (ex bekah) is because you have to have a bee shield or gear that enhance the weapon. Although pearls in Borderlands 1 were great with specific gear, on their own they proved usually useful and powerful on any character with most builds and play styles. I know specific gear and builds made other pearls better than others and what they were just on their own. Borderlands 2’s pearls overall aren’t worth farming, since there are at best ok (on their own) or just terrible.

BL 1,2 and the PS are 3 of my favourite games ever, I've played BL2 and the PS several times and I love them. I have never been so psyched for a game then when i heard BL3 was coming to the PS4 and whoah man, what an utter pile of shite that was. It has to be the single most disappointing game I've ever played, I barely managed to complete the game before it went straight back onto Ebay. They just seemed to forget everything that made the first 3 games so great. If they make a 4th game then surely they have to go back to the first 2 games roots because part 3 was wank.

What i loved about bl1. The ambience, the discreet music, the color palette (yeah i prefered it to the ultra colorfoul sequels), the mad max vibes radiating everywhere, the subtle not in your face humour, the visual non traditional storytelling, the loot of course, the gun skins which were more realistic and not as cartoonish, the extra weapon types such as the split between support machine gun, heavy machine gun and assault rifles which all worked differently, S&S and atlas manufacturers, the fact that manufacturers depending on their economic standing in the game had weaker or stronger and rarer or more common weapons (atlas were hard to find but with very good stats while tediore were super common), the dlcs except for Moxxies, pearleacents being legit the best guns of the game, the very strong purples, crawmerax being an insane yet rewarding challenge, general knoxx armory (best feeling when you loot it with the glitch), the fact that 90% of the legendaries are strong (compared to bl2 where they were both insanely hard to find and the majority of them was weak anyway), the class mods which were very impactful gave significant boosts and enabled tons of builds in an otherwise seemingly limited game and the much smoother scaling of difficulty. What i didnt like was some of the bugs that gave you a few legendaries in different rarities which made them easy to miss, that even with the bank you didnt have enough space to stash enough awesome weapons since so many of them were great and that we waited till the remake to have some of the legendaries that didnt have their effect working properly finally fixed, also some of the skills which made 0 sense in late game such as the money or exp giving skills which were simply dead for 99% of the game.

The freedom of Modded weapons in BL1 was amazing! Nothing better than pulling the peashooter out and launching your teammate straight off the map! Modding freedom was one thing BL2 was seriously lacking... I mean I didn't even mess with mods because I hated having to dump my items back in the bank before logging off everytime.
