a friend of mine was asking about building belt grinders and he asked why so few folks suggested single medium speed grinders for knifemaking. caltoncutlery.com

That’s a good point. I haven’t set up my grinder yet. It will be variable speed but I think I will run it at a fixed speed for a few months

that is a good way to get to know your grinder!

Nothing you do surprises me anymore. You're very intelligent. The knife 🔪 you made me for hunting was stolen. Ive been trying to find it but ive had no luck .

Would love to start making my own knives but I have only so many fingers and can’t really afford to lose any

Love your videos, watching you for years right now I am messing around with dust collection and I see you have all your grinders in one room to contain some of the dust but I didn’t see any type of dust collector. If you have one, could you do a video on your dust collection set up?

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ntd-lMt5sbbPqXk.html the fans in the top and bottom of the front wall of the grinding room act as a big filter when I turn them on. which I only do really when I have a big handle grinding day. it keeps most of the dust in the room. the water buckets under each grinder catch most of the sparks and such. and I vacum out the room when i think about it with a big shop vac at least a couple hours after the last time I ground steel so there is no chance of sparks getting into a bucket of dust and smoldering for a few hours to catch fire later.

I started with files and sandpaper and I have never had anything but a single speed grinder and I make some passable knives.

the knives ive seen of yours are quite a bit nicer than just passable my friend :}

Great topic and very true info. I’ve been using a single speed but plan to build a variable with step pulleys. I do have one question if you could answer it for me. I see the spring tensioner and I’m trying to find out how many pounds of tension you use. That is one of the hold ups in my new grinder design. I’ve heard anywhere from 30-60 pounds but that’s a huge range. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I use just enough tension so that the belt runs smooth, which I would bet would be alot less than 30-60 pounds. if you run too much tension, it starts getting hard on bearings, makes your motor run harder, and the tracking wheel starts stretching out the center of your belts and you have problems running a used belt anywhere but dead center. so i would build your grinder with a very adjustable spring tension. put a belt on, and run with just enough tension to keep the belt on the grinder and then play with it. or load it up with alot of tension, and then back it off until you start having problems.

Damn. Your content is great, but listening to the audio w/ headphones when you moved that tripod around? Holy crap I wanted to reach through the screen and attach the tripod to your floor with tapcons so you couldn't ever move it again! In all seriousness, you've got the knowledge, edit it down just a bit and fix the sound is truly meant as constructive criticism. If you didn't have good content I wouldn't have said a word just clicked away. Best of luck!

i oiled the tripod so it should not hurt your ears anymore.
