@@coolsam5000 He is a great hybrid option and can do both, he was used more defensive against stronger opposition and more free flowing and attacking against others in Motta’s Bologna. Under Spalletti’s Italy team he was playing more attacking and also had the assist in that amazing last minute goal vs Croatia!

A back 4 of Timber / Saliba / Gabriel/ Califiori or White is mouth watering indeed. Both Timber and Califiori can play in different spots on the back line and keeping Tomi and Kvior for rotation with the FA and Carabao Cup and Champions League they will need bodies.

I reckon arteta keeps zinchenko. Purely because hes a different type of lb. I havent seen calafiori play at all but from what people are telling me, hes basically a better version of kiwior, so theres no point having 2 of the same player where u could have a different profile with zini

He’s not going to usurp Gabriel. He’s our version of Gvardiol. The only reason Gabriel wasn’t playing early on last season was because he had his head turned by a Saudi team. He even says he sat down with Arteta and was convinced to stay on. Arteta and Edu know what they’re doing.

Brilliant analysis. This is the most excited I’ve been watching a defender comp in a long time. Can’t pretend I knew him before this tournament but he looks like the perfect player for us. I would be very excited if this came to pass.

Very glad we got Trossard instead of Mudryk. LB is definitely a position to strengthen. Tomi is injury prone, and Zinchenko is great on the ball, but an easy target out of possession. Calafiori seems like the guy. Arteta seems to like versatile players. I''ll be honest, he wasn't on my radar until all the rumours started

Interesting video as ever, pleased to hear so many think Calafiori will work best in LB. Hoping to see Timber's right foot in RB, allowing White to also cover/rotate with Saliba - 4 lefties, 4 right footed... essentially replaced Soares: ti/to sal/wht gab/kiw cal/zin - ramsdale, tomi, white, kiwior, zinchenko could develop a solid second unit for domestic cup and pre-UCL prem games... Then, just add 1️⃣Musiala 2️⃣a left footed RW 3️⃣a physical striker Hope vieira and ESR come through, sell everyone else.

He makes Arsenal a lot more unpredictable. We can even play 334 with him and Ben White supporting Rice in the midfield. Then track back as wing back. I'm sure we'll get one more player in midfield and one more in attack. Arsenal's strength is leaving the opponent guessing where is who.

If Arsenal get Calafiori for left-back, what do you think about Timber taking right-back and then Ben White moving into DM coving the right hand side in a double pivot with Rice covering the left? (If I recall correctly, I think White played DM on loan for Leeds, which is where my thinking for this comes from)

Gooner here: I like our squad, and with a healthy preseason we don't NEED any major signings. There are a few places where we could tweak things, maybe have a player who isn't what you might call 'irreplaceable', but in general, in Arteta and Edu we trust.

I’m excited to see him as a Gooner. And Timber didn’t even get a chance last season so I’m very excited to see him play as well. Seems we have a pretty stacked defense if we sign this guy. Zinchenko needs to be moved on unfortunately, too many slip ups.

Timber was absolutely intended to play LB (as we saw in preseason and the first match when he got injured. LB was only a weak spot because he was then out all season. This deal suggests that Zinchenko will be on his way to Bayern. Arteta will do to him what he did to Ben White on the right. To have Timber and Calafiori at LB while the latter can also be backup for Gabriel is a big improvement over last season and turns out weakest area into a very strong one. Now we just need to sign a big time 6 and we’re significantly better than last season when Jorginho had to start for 4-5 months.

I'd expect Timber in RB more, tackling right footed with back to goal. With 3-cups, White can play right CB as well, cover/rest Saliba, strike up partnership with kiwior for two units: ti/to sal/wht gab/kiw CAL/zin

If Calafiori comes in, Timber has to surely play DM. Keep Zinchenko without a shadow of a doubt. There are games perfectly made for his skill set, absolutely 💯 We closed the gap to just 2 points with these players. Keep them and add to this blend let’s beat City before evolving this squad! 🤷🏽♂️

LB is the only position where we don't have a regular started in last season, our attack is fine tbh, it was shit when we were playing Havertz LCM and Nketiah as striker, but ever since Havertz moved to striker we're good enough. We can improve, but LB is more a priority 100%.

Really like the sound of this signing, it was always likely we would go for another versatile, physical defender and Calafiori fits the bill so, so well. My only thought is that the analysis of yourself and others seems to downplay the role that Timber will have for us next season. Timber played 1 full game for Arsenal last season (and looked incredible) and it was expected he would be a nailed on starter. Timber will get plenty of minutes, whether that’s keeping Calafiori out of the side to begin with or playing a more flexible role in midfield and covering LB/RB remains to be seen. Great to have so many options from a tactical standpoint.

I'm telling you he would have been great for Arsenal. The reason he doesn't play well is because he regrets going to Chelsea. His first match for Chelsea was his best, and he showed glimpses of what he can do, but he's looked uninterested since. I do more often than not trust in arteta but this transfer just makes me think of the start of the season when he played partey as a right back and Gabriel was on the bench. It went awfully and I feel yet again he's trying to remove Gabriel from the team, which considering how amazing his partnership was with saliba, could yet again lead to a weak start of the season that may cost the title. Another point is that timber seems like he's gonna be the guy in the left, so calafiori feels like a replacement for kiwior for the price of a starter with us currently having 4 players for that position (and 2/3 for lcb).

@StephenC1908both of you don't know what plan was, and you don't know how the plan changed after timber injury, it was a complete change of plan which make me even putting more trust on arteta bcoz plan b almost worked, so it looks like he don't want to rely on timber alone as we don't know how he is going to play from that injury, trust me, we have the best coach on our hands

@@makei89I agree. I still don't know completely what the plan A was because the Arsenal that played City in the Community Shield looked like the plan A. Then Timber was out and then a few players over the beginning few months. I think Arteta did a great job of pivoting a lot last season which is why having different options is good. I even think ESR was meant to have a big role last season...but then more injuries.

You do always have to be wary of signings that get hyped in international tournaments. However, starting for Italy at just 22yo suggests a guaranteed high level of composure and discipline, especially for a defensive player. Combine that with the fact he’s had an incredible season with Bologna, and the fact that Arteta really has earned our trust with signings and talent development, and this looks like an excellent addition for Arsenal.

idk anything about Califiori, but also I think the problem with Mudryk is Chelsea. None of their signings except Palmer have performed at their level. If Arsenal are sgning a left footed CB, might it mean that they're getting bids for Gabriel?

Gabriel nearly left last Summer but can't see it happening this year. There has been interest in Italy for Kiwior (left footed centre back that can cover LB) so I think he will probably leave if Calafiori is signed. I could also see either Zinchenko or Tomi being sold if a good offer comes in as Timber is fit again.

Done? We shouldn’t ever be in….. 140 missed games due to injuries… 140 With an aging VVD, injury prone Konate and Gomez, why the hell would we even consider him?! Yes a great player, but 140 games out is insane for his age. Also this just screams hype signing, before the Euros, no one really even heard of this guy. Yet you have players like Dragusin who signed for Spurs and barely played, having an amazing time at the Euros. That is more of a player you try to turn to LFC
