Why Can’t We Be Happy for Wrexham?

Wrexham have achieved promotion for a second straight year, but the once darlings of the football world now seem to be annoying the masses with their Hollywood ownership and influx of cash.
Do some angry fans have a point? Or is this a case of jealousy and of hating anything that gets over-exposed?

How can you hate on a team or a show that takes time out from football action to spend a whole show on autism? A series of episodes on the ladies team? They’ve done it the right way, I love this story.

Exactly! In addition to actually producing a winning team, which money doesn’t always buy, they’ve invested in the community, the fans, women’s sports and have been massive advocates for those with special needs. Even if you want to hate these guys you’ve gotta get really creative!

I was blown away by what they've done to make the stadium accessible, led by Kerry. A sensory room, a quiet stand, raised platforms so that wheelchair users can have a different view and not just for home wheelchair users but the same on the visitors side too. They are thinking of everyone, I think that's awesome.

It's important to remember too that Wrexham have been in the second and third tiers of the English league system lots of times in their history, being this high in the league system is nothing new to Wrexham, listening to some haters I sometimes feel they just aren't aware of this, or just choose to forget, whereas REAL fans who know their stuff respect Wrexham and don't see what's happening as a Cinderella story at all, a lot of REAL fans see this as something the club deserves after having to endure many years of what was extremely poor ownership. I went to art college in Wrexham for 2 years in the late 80's as a teenager and it's a cracking town full of lovely people, as an adult I'm neither from Wrexham or a Wrexham fan but I couldn't be happier for them, tier 3 is nothing new to them, and I remember them being in tier two for about 4 years straight when I was a kid, they were an incredible team for many years and the best team in Wales at times too, so their decline was heart-breaking, and the only thing which annoys me is the Hollywood FC haters thinking they're getting chances they don't deserve simply because of money, well the way I see it good things happen to good people sometimes, and the people of Wrexham deserve everything which is happening to their club right now, at the end of the day REAL fans aren't annoyed by Wrexham because they respect the history of the club and know all that's happening right now is good ownership is putting them back into leagues they deserve to be in, I will always have a soft spot for Wrexham as I grew up in the same village as club legend Mickey Thomas and will never forget his freekick when they knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup!

I totally agree and no I don’t think they care either. Their apprehension with the ownership was if the club would lose its identity but it seems like that has been priority 1B to the 1A of winning and the documentary has done more to amplify the club’s history and identity more than anything. Big Red Dragons supporter here from South Africa. From watching Welcome to Wrexham starting from season 1, it reinvigorated my love for football; previously I had almost lost all interest in sports all together... so I am really grateful to Rob & Ryan, Wrexham and their community for that fact! And as you say, who doesn't love a good underdog story? I cannot wait to see Wrexham AFC get to the Premier League one day, and mark my words, by the time they do that, they will be one of the most popular/followed teams in the whole world! :) Lastly, I wanted to point something out with regards to people mentioning in the comment that other teams or people are "jealous" of Wrexham because of R&R buying the team etc. It is not actually jealousy that a lot of people are experiencing, but actually envy. I had this pointed out to me when I made a comment on another youtube video from somebody else, and it made a lot of sense when I looked into what they were actually saying: "Envy is when you want what someone else has, but jealousy is when you're worried someone's trying to take what you have. If you want your neighbor's new convertible, you feel envy. If she takes your husband for a ride, you feel jealousy."

What I don't like about Wrexham is that this looks like a novelty by some American celebrities. They aren't life long fans, they aren't institutional investors. As he points out the model is not sustainable. They aren't building long term success. It's amazing that Forest Green Rovers wage bill is top 5 in the league but they're going to be relegated with another loss. Money doesn't always equate to promotion. I think R&R have hit upon how to ensure Wrexham can maintain the momentum they've gotten - invest in the community, grown your brand and reach globally, build up the secondary and tertiary aspects of the club. Many lower league teams should take notes.

That’s a key point, am I flux of money doesn’t always equate to success. We see it at the top levels too. Chelsea has no return on their financial investment so far. Barcelona has spent their way into a financial crisis. It takes more than money. I’m their case, I believe their marketing brilliance makes the spending more sustainable because it’s not a one-time injection if cash. They’ve created ongoing revenue streams. And they appear to know how to spend it.

Speaking as a Liverpool fan, it disgusts me to see comments on social media attacking the owners for not doing enough. I've supported the team for 50 years, some great years at the start, a hell of a lot of terrible years in the middle, and some truly dreadful years with the owners before FSG who ONLY cared about money and did nothing to help the team, and damn near bankrupted us... FSG have flaws - they are not perfect, I don't think any owners ever are. But they've rebuilt a stadium the previous owners wanted to sell for cash. They've built a brand new training center, invested wisely in players when bearing in mind the FFP rules that clubs that are not Manchester City, Real Madrid, PSG, or Barcelona have to follow (and Chelsea in the last two years since the UK government confiscated the club and sold it)... There's a right way and a wrong way to run a football club. I've seen Liverpool run terribly. My hometown is Bury, where the father of Phil and Gary Neville was on the board of directors for decades. Yet his sons chose to invest in Salford when their home town club that their dad was a director of was going under... The Wrexham guys are doing a fantastic job, in the right way, and are investing in the community as well. They will hit a ceiling, of course they will. But they both seem to know that already and are putting things in place to make sure that they hit the ceiling like helium balloon rather than a wrecking ball

Agreed about the Wrexham guys. I hope my comments about the FSG guys weren’t taken out of context. I mentioned that I hear a lot about them needing to spend more but I don’t personally believe it. The club is funded more than enough to compete. It’s just something I hear at times.

Nail on the head.... Jealousy from other fans (understandably IMO). It's seems it's 'human nature' today, to hate on someone or something that _finally_ has a stroke of unbelievably good fortune....even after years and years of struggles. Everyone knows the story how the fans of the club refused to let it die - raising over a hundred grand, in less than a day - which in a small, working class town, is just unreal - kids selling their pushbikes, raiding their piggy banks, folk drawing out their savings accounts, offering the deeds to their houses as collateral even, ANYWAY they could raise that money, to save the club being chucked out of the league - just because a scumbag owner had deliberately racked up massive debts hoping he could bust the club - and sell the land for a massive profit. But NO..... people forget all that, and are bitter and jealous...because they wanted THEIR club to have that stroke of luck.... It's a sign of the times I'm afraid.

Great video, but your point about Salford City 'not doing shit' was wrong. They had never *ever* been as high as the Football League in their history, they have always been amateur/semi-pro, and were two leagues where Wrexham were when taken over and got three promotions within 5 years into League Two where they finally hit a plateau. Wrexham are more of a sleeping giant with the past history of being a professional, successful team, the stadium infrastructure and fanbase etc. to tap into. Salford just don't have the historical fanbase to help support that growth.
@pitchsidepub

All fair points and “not doing shit” was more snarky than detailed, but to the point of everyone assuming money and exposure would lead to immediate success, I think everyone immediately assumed after they were purchased by the United players that they’d go shooting up the pyramid and that hasn’t happened. Not to diminish them getting to league two, but now everyone seems to think just having famous owners and outspending your opponents means automatic continued success and Salford is actually a great example of why it’s not. But your points are very correct they did have a much larger mountain to climb.

@@pitchsidepub Oh yeah for sure. I think it's the notion that two opposites can be true at the same time. Teams can spend a lot of money and can go up, but can also spend money and not make progress after a certain point. It still requires good management and shrewd spending. I'm a united fan and our owners have been leeching money, our spending has been utterly atrocious - how much for Anthony and Maguire? When we could have spent on far better value for better quality. One of the biggest things Wrexham did well was immediately bringing in an experienced CEO, and Shaun Harvey to the board. They all have the club, and the community's, best interest at heart.

The promotion/relegation system is the fairest system and great for those climbing the ladder but is also the reason for the never ending financial chaos of the clubs and why there’s constantly clubs being bought/sold. The best clubs are the ones with owners willing to literally burn cash with no expectation of profit (i.e. man city). It’s a wholly unsustainable model for 99% of owners The MLS model is based on sustainability with revenue sharing (to help the struggling clubs and maintain competitive balance) and a salary cap (most recent salary cap was $4.9M, lower than wrexham’s). It follows the NFL model n actually leads to profitability across the league. Obviously no relegation but the US doesn’t have enough quality clubs for that to really even be an option. So the MLS model makes ownership predictable and somewhat profitable and leads to a balanced league while the FA model is much more exciting for fans and allows anyone to climb the ladder but also makes ownership, for the most part, an unpredictable money pit because success is directly linked to how much money you’re willing to lose. Pros and cons for both I guess. Cheers

I’d argue that the MLS model is WILDLY profitable for owners, maybe not on an annual basis but on the certainty of franchise value appreciation year over year. That also comes at the expense of player salaries which are suppressed thanks to a salary cap. So while it does add an element of competitive balance to the equation, it also is incredibly favorable towards the owners at the expense of the players. Additionally, there is more than enough infrastructure for lower level teams in America to create a Perfectly adequate second and third division. In fact, you could make a very easy argument that MLS itself has about 10 teams, too many and a third of the league should be the start of a second division. Not to mention how much those lower division teams would be buoyed by an open system that gave them the chance to actually be promoted and even more, so yes, a trickle down revenue sharing system was implemented in the way that lower division English teams receive a small portion of premier league television money. So the only real pro-argument to a closed system is if you are an owner and want the cost certainly of your franchise value, which they have the right to fight for given the exorbitant franchise fees many of them had to pay. That’s the biggest obstacle at the moment.

All fair points. The salary cap should definitely be higher if they ever want to compete with any top flight euro league. Also agree that lower leagues could be formed starting w the worst mls teams. I think the quality would drop off significantly at the start but would improve over the years. MLS and it’s lower leagues would also be competing with 4 other well-established pro leagues (NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB) for ticket sales, sponsorships, etc, which isn’t the case in the UK

@@Cheebahawk236 yeah for sure more competition here though I think they’d blow NHL out of the water. By some metrics MLS already does. And despite being a lifelong baseball fan, I think if done right it could surpass baseball too.

What will all haters say next season when they see the wage bill for the majority of the league one teams they’re joining, they’re triple if not quadruple what Wrexhams currently is, Ryan & Rob are going to have to dig deep from here on in, but I’m sure with the right sponsorship etc they’ll do it.
@SjomalingPhotography
@SjomalingPhotography 29 күн бұрын
Not really true. There are only 5 teams in League One currently who have a higher wage bill than Wrexham. Two more players of high league one standard or perhaps even championship standard and Wrexham would be second in the league not too far behind Derby.

I’m not sure their current business model of just outspending the competition is going to be sustainable but they’ve also been pretty open about that. They’ll have to continue to generate more revenue to keep up, but they’ve also been really creative on how they do that.

Greetings from Finland! Sometimes you kinda miss the bigger picture. We are talking about Football as a sport and what we as fans would like it to be. I have followed the UK top leaque since the 80s and most of the time it has been great. Then the criminals from Russia, Middle East and what not ruined the joy with their dirty money. Do we want that or do we want to watch and follow a club and follow a story bigger than just the game? I do. "Anybody" could have bought Wrexham. These guys are not tycoons or some shady "business men". Their only fault seems to be, that everybody likes them and they are famous. But do not think for a second that all this has just fallen from the sky😮😊. And to the other fans, millions of "new" people are also watching your team and I think your team sponsors are not wery sad about that😅❤❤❤.

@@pitchsidepub Hello! I was not commenting what you said. Fully agree! I just tried to confirm what you said that we fans/people need stories like that. And even here we have our own "fan club" for teams with similar stories. Like Afc Wimbledon vs. MK Dons. What a crazy story. All the best from Finland☃⚽🤩

All that money, sitting in 3rd 😬 jokes aside, I like what the owners are doing for the club and community, but Wrexham were favourites to win the league and/or get promotion at the beginning of the season so they've achieved what was expected of them. It's going to be good to see how they do in L1 now

The people that are pissed off are just jealous cause they (Rob and Ryan) are the the stereotypical owners that people actually want. They care about the community in Wales, interact with them and even listen to them regarding needs for the club. And the others who hate them i.e. people like Simon Jordan from talksport they are just a-holes who are failures at football management that can't understand how two "hollywood stars" can do a way way better job than people who dedicate their lives to it....its actually sad. The way he talks about them is pathetic.
The RISE of Wrexham sparks controversy? 🤔
