For many there are a few seminal Mob related movies made in the last 50 years. Films like The Godfather Goodfellas, The Departed, have all crafted some of the best characters in film. But Martin Scorsese's Casino delivers one of the best villains of them all with Joe Pesci's Nicky Santoro. Casino gives us a real dynamic between our main anti-heroes, and Nicky Santoro will forever be one of the best.

I think Joe Pesci in the 80s and 90s was one of the most powerful actors. He can be so terrifying and hilarious at the same time, he was able to be intimidating and also do funny comedies. Lethal weapon series, my cousin vinny, racing bull, home alone, goodfellas, the irishman, casinò & with honors. This guy was and is legend and in Casinò was fucking great and very intimidating

Joe Pesci really made an impact on you in these movie roles as a gangster who was uncontrollable and unpredictable as well as being tough as nails and ruthless. People with these traits are very hard to deal with as they go from calm to manic seemingly without reason. He was the master of this character type.

Joe Pesci played this character and Tommy in Goodfellas absolutely perfect. I remember the first time I saw Goodfellas, the scenes were done with such honesty I found myself kinda disturbed. I was young but the character's willingness to use violence so quick and graphically left a impact on me. Casino captured these same feelings only 7 years later. Only Martin Scorsese could have filmed these movies in such a way, that to this day I still remember how I first felt when watching them.
@laurarules3642
@laurarules3642 Жыл бұрын
Completely agree. I was in my early teens when Goodfellas came on TV late one night . I had grown up with a VHS rental store literally a 2 minute walk away from my house so I was constantly renting films and I grew up watching all the 80's horror films and action movies as a child . I thought I had a high tolerance to horror and violence UNTIL I watched Goodfellas that first time. It felt so real, authentic and the violence was genuinely scary and felt like it could literally just happen to anybody and because it was the mafia there was nothing you could do about it. I caught Goodfellas right as it was starting and even though I had school the next day I was gripped and horrified and watched it all. The only other movie to have such an impact on me was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre which I watched when I was in my early 20's and thankfully I managed to go into that movie completely blind without knowing anything at all about it

My father was a huge cinephile, and he actually introduced me to the film Casino when I was about 10 years old. I learned that he did this because of two things: because it was a great movie, and most importantly, to discourage me from anything related to gambling. I have to say, it worked wonderfully because 1. Ive turned into a cinephile myself, and 2. I have always had a disdain for gambling since then.. and also scared of Joe Pesci lol.

I read a book years ago called "Enforcer" about the real person Pesci portrayed in this movie. Not only does Pesci bare a strong resemblance to the actual person.. but the performance was so dead on in his portrayal, since Spilatro was truly arch crimminal. A man who actually enjoyed torturing people and even killed his own brother. In Chicago and then eventually Vegas, Spilatro WAS the Enforcer
@gregrock7451
@gregrock7451 Жыл бұрын
I read somewhere that Spilotro's son has been highly critical of how the media-- particularly the movie "Casino"-- has portrayed his father; I think he also tried to produce an exhibit-- I guess it was intended to be a tourist attraction-- dedicated to showing his late father's softer/gentler side. Seems the one aspect of the elder Spilotro's nature as depicted bu Nick Pileggi and Martin Scorcese that his kid approved of was how he'd be a ruthless/remorseless gangster all night, but a doting father in the morning, and was otherwise very much involved in his son's life. For instance:the scene in the movie where Nicky the gangster and the guy who was a detective with the Las Vegas PD Vice Squad are just hanging out like a couple of dads coaching their sons' Little League baseball team. That was actually a "thing," just like his predilection for brutal violence at the drop of a hat.

I love this movie. It’s argued whether or not the pen stabbing scene actually happened or not. Frank cullotta says it didn’t but Frank Calebrese jr said it did happen at this car wash that still stands today in Oak Park on Harlem. Right around the corner from my house pretty much. Idk man. Either way Tony was a scary dude.

@@patobantan420 Mafia films could be considered horror films after realizing that New York's criminals often had a Joe Pesci character or two amongst the ranks. HBO's "Gotti" could be a horror film due to Anthony Quinn talking down John Gotti himself over his rule breaking. If Quinn talked to me like that I would never disobey Carlo Gambino ever again.

When pesci was walking across the casino floor, he scared a dealer, who thought it was the real guy. 🤣 Apparently, he looked so much like him, he scared a few people in Vegas. Also, a few years ago an actor on late night was telling a story,. He had a party and some people blocked Joe Pesci driveway and he wasn't happy. Joe went over and the people moved their cars. However, one week later, the entertainer was at an Italian restaurant, when a REAL mob guy came over and thanked him for moving the cars and told him not to do it again 😳🤣

This is one of my all time favourite movies. When the real life Sam Rosthein (Frank Rosenthal played by Robert De Niro) was interviewed, he said this movie was nearly 100% accurate aside from some small details so it's more of a documentary masterpiece! If I could sum up the frightening aspect of someone like 'Nicky' in one word, it would be 'Unpredictability'. People generally are afraid of, and concerned about, things they can't control, predict or adapt to. This keeps them on edge and consequently at a disadvantage. Skilled psychopaths instinctively know this and act accordingly, thereby controlling the situation to their benefit.

So many people are intimidated by a "tough guy", what happens you meet someone who isn't? I knew fifteen year olds that would have used this guy for toilet paper in South Texas. I was raised in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas in the eighties. 40-50% of the youth were gang members or deeply gang affiliated. There was so much crime that people's grand parents trafficked drugs. Our neighbor to our was left an arson for hire, and a contract killer, and the one on our right trafficked drugs. People talk about scary men, and they're intimidated by scary men. When you're raised somewhere where twelve year olds will stab you, it's harder to intimidate people.

Casino is a true story, I was there back then and I remember all the events. Las Vegas was a much smaller place, Between newspapers, gossip, and who you knew, there weren’t many secrets. Just about everything in that movie is factual except for the names. Even that goofy scene where the feds ran out of gas with the helicopter and had to land at the golf course was true. One small discrepancy, Ace, who is really lefty, had his car blow up at Marie calendars not the flamingo. A little sidenote to that, President Reagan was in town that weekend, and one of the secret service agents got hit from a piece of scrapnel From the car explosion when he was coming out of the restaurant. The last time I saw Nikki, who was really Tony Spilotro, was in the courthouse downtown, I remember him giving his son a quarter for a soft drink. Nikki may have been terrifying in the movie, but in real life, Ace was the one that I would have been scared of.

Nicky Santoro is based on a real guy from the Chicago Outfit named Tony "The Ant" Spilotro who was sent to Vegas by Tony "Big Tuna" Accardo. The Ant was there to ensure that the real owners of the casinos got their skim back to Chicago safely and in full. There is a scene in Casino where member of the Chicago Outfit beat Tony and his younger brother to death with baseball bats in a cornfield. The cornfield is in Enos, Indiana, but the two of them were dead before taking them to Indiana. They were, however, beaten to death with baseball bats in the basement at a home in Bensenville, Illinois.

Nicky Santoro alone is why Casino is Scorsese's masterpiece to me. And one of my all time favourite movies. Sure he's not quite as quotable as he is in Goodfellas where he's basically just a glorified F bomb dispenser. He has an actual character this time and yet he's still unpredictable as ever, you don't know exactly when he's going to explode. He'll whack you without a second thought, and get even then, scenes like the desert scene and when he talks to Charlie (the banker) about how "you get my money or I'll put your fuckin brain to sleep" are still more terrifying than when we see him put someone's head in a vise or stab someone with a pen.
