Football is significantly more popular in the US now then in the 80s. The real problem is that there was no media exposure. It wasn't until European clubs started selling tv contracts in the 90s and 2000s that football took off.

I think the biggest thing may actually have been 90s parents seeing soccer as a safer sport, so more recent generations grew up with it in their lives. The average age of an MLB fan is like twice that of an MLS fan. And, of course, baseball was the sport that lost out the most as children changed sports.

There’s no way to enjoy higher level football as an adult in Canada. I can go play a Sunday league, but there’s no discussion beyond the basics with others who are into football. So the level of footballing around here is pretty stale.

AS Roma fan here. I am loving Friedkin's Roma management. They are mixing their enormous amount of cash and American expertise with Roma traditions. They hired Mourinho and won a trophy immediately. Nowadays Roma is having limitations in the transfers due to FFP. This situation was generated by Pallotta, the previous American chairman. Friedkin put more than half billion of euros in Roma. In July an agreement with Adidas is going to be announced and Friedkins are working with the city mayor in order to have the stadium built in 2027 (Roma 100 years anniversary). All of this shows that they do not want only to make profits, but also to place Roma in the top 10 of European clubs for a very long time.

I've always had a soft spot for Roman, should've won that Eurpeoan Cup in mid 80s vs Liverpool and that Cappello 2001 team might be my favorite league team of all time next to Milan. Great fans, all Roma kits are basically classic football jerseys

Very interesting analysis here. There are 2 aspects of the change in football in the US I think were missed opportunities (one was kind of skipped over and the other wasn't covered at all.) 1.) The point is right that Beckham has immersed Inter Miami in Miami culture but more importantly, most of the MLS teams are doing the same in their own cities. Atlanta United is VERY Atlanta. Columbus Crew is VERY Columbus. The Sounders fit Seattles culture. Los Angeles has an annual match literally called El Tráfico between the rival clubs there. Nothing more LA than traffic. So while "football" may not be American, the MLS is starting to make "soccer" fit uniquely in each city that host a team. 2.) The other biggest impact on the rise in soccer was probably AYSO. There are way more people now that have grown up playing the game so they are more familiar, have interest in the game as pro entertainment but MOST importantly, they are teaching their children which builds tradition, something that any growing sports MUST have to be successful.
@sebasoler5347
@sebasoler5347 Жыл бұрын
Your 1st point is exactly why Football works everywhere else. In countries where football is big, almost every neighbourhood or town has its own team, and the identities of the place and the team are very intertwined. Rivalries and alliances are formed over time as teams play each other, and even more if the teams sometimes go up and down the divisions. You even form that "link" with the players that have played in your team (even if they are in Europe or somewhere else now) so when time comes that the national team is assembled, it very much is the representation of the overall identity of the country. So thats why i think a lot of people in the US dont think of football as having anything "American", you still need time to form those "bonds". But if the US keeps going down that path, of forming teams and players people get to know and identify with, it will be inevitable that one day you guys might think of football as something as "American" as Basketball or Baseball too
@barak-rocky-giles2081
@barak-rocky-giles2081 Жыл бұрын
@@sebasoler5347 I agree with you. The most popular sport here in the U.S. is American Football and the culture of each team in each city is VERY different from each other to the point that they have unique personality traits that are common in their fans compared to the other teams in the same league. This makes sense because America is not very unified culturally nation wide. It's more unified by your region < state < city < town. The 2018 MLS Cup was the first time where more fans attended than the NFL Super Bowl (which was held like 4 months later in the same stadium) which is a huge deal here. Hopefully they keep moving in this direction. 🤞

Great post here: one of the cool things that I have seen in the MLS is that they give an award each year to "the best" fanbase of that season. I think that's a really cool idea as it could galvanise many of the fanbases who sit on their hands as a sign of their disapproval with the team's performance. After all, the "fair play" award probably created a disincentive to play cynically?
@kpunk
@kpunk Жыл бұрын
1.) Beautiful point. I'd like to add that what made the growth of soccer fail in the US was their attempt to "Americanize" the game. But the game never needed to be Americanized. It's the soccer culture that had to be. I love how everyone makes fun of the Seattle supporters but their entire regional culture revolves around being weird and us making fun of their cringe chants will make them double down and I fucking love them for that. 2.) MLS has a big opportunity to build a soccer culture that doesn't have the baggage of other footballing cultures. Unfortunately, this leads to some of them looking very sterile and domestic but I think it's the right route to make the sport as family friendly as possible

One reason that football is globally popular is precisely because it's not an American sport. That way, the barriers to participation are very low. No such thing as buying franchises, which allows a club to start from a low league and grow: e.g Brentford most recently. It has also meant that there are efforts made to have other countries adopt the sport so a tournament like the World Cup is truly global. If it were an American sport, being the world's biggest market will mean there is no need to increase the sport's popularity even in Mexico.

So because America is the biggest market even though it isn't (see china and India) there is no incentive to capitalize on foreign markets???? must be why we only have McDonald's and Hollywood movies in America only oh wait both those things are sold globally

What you did not mention in the video is that UEFA lobbied FIFA to intervene with the ASL because of them buying Europe based footballers to play in the US. This led to the sport being labeled as "foreign" due to outside interference. Also, American soccer will take time to grow because less than 1 generation of Americans have access to local professional teams. Tradition is essential in football culture and it will take time for such soccer traditions to form for Americans. There are no shortcuts to football and China has been proof that just throwing billions of dollars can get you nowhere

i get why americans call it a communist sport, fans are very much involved and attached to their clubs, the money is less for owners, but this is what makes it the best sport in the world. i don't care if america doesn't likes it. big investment recently from america and middle east is already causing imbalance between the teams so I'd very much like it if they can keep their money to themselves and let the fans have this sport

Are you American? I ask, because I am, and the communist take is way overblown. I’ve NEVER heard anyone here call it communist, and I’m almost 60. Maybe a Trumpanzee might say that, but I’ve never heard it. There was alot of bias against it as a game of foreigners when I was growing up, but it’s really hard to believe that Americans would call something communist when Germans, English, Italians and Latin Americans play it.

I would argue that it has not been happening "in recent years" that clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool were majority-owned by US businesses or businessmen. I would say that "recent years" means roughly 5 years; however, Kroenke got majority ownership of Arsenal in 2011 and Liverpool has been owned by Fenway Sports Group since 2010. There are even talks about Fenway selling Liverpool at the moment, so they may want to get rid of European club ownership like the Chinese have been doing recently. Also, both the Arsenal supporters and the ManUtd supporters want the US investors to sell their respective clubs because what they have been doing is taking money out of the club into their own pockets while the clubs have been deteriorating. So it seems like either you get US investors who use the club to fill their own pockets even more or you get owners from the Near East who invest heavily into the club with their blood money. This is why I love Germany's 50+1 rule and hope that they will never get rid of it. Regarding "undervalued assets", I think it was a bad choice to use Chelsea as one of these clubs in the table at 8:20 . Chelsea cost Boehly 3.5 Bn, so just as much as those NFL teams are apparently worth according to the table. Saying that European football clubs cost "way less" is kind of wrong. Yes, they cost less when you buy a club that is struggling financially and/or on the pitch, like Newcastle United for example, but Newcastle wasn't bought by an US investor, it was bought by the Saudis for almost nothing in comparison. Inestments like the ones into ManUtd by the Glazers, Arsenal by the Kroenke, or Liverpool by FSG are the ones that really make a lot of money now that the value of these clubs has shot up. Buying Chelsea for 3.5 Bn was hardly a bargain or something that Boehly will get a proper net income from. But who knows, maybe the top Premier League clubs will be worth 6 Bn in 10 years - and if that will be the case I am sure AI will make a video about it :).

One of the main issues if not the most important one, is that you can't put ads during a game of football (except at half-time of course). It's 45 min twice straight with no cuts or break. In baseball, basketball and american football, it is the opposite. The cultural approach of sports is also not the same in the US than in Europe (spectacle vs sport for instance). For a breakthrough, the US sport culture needs to change or it will never break really into the market.

Speaking as an ugly American I think this video did a great job of talking about why football didn't catch on in the States, but I think it misses some other points that go beyond Americans simply thinking football is just for communists. A lot of kids play football in the United States, myself included, but for the men's game it's usually made up of kids who couldn't hit a baseball, weren't big enough for basketball, or had parents that refused to let their kids risk a concussion in armored rugby. If a kid possesses god tier athletic abilities in the States, they usually get sent off to one of our homegrown sports, which means the quality of play for football in youth leagues is pretty bad, which has a negative impact on interest and audience engagement. What's interesting is that while the talent pool for the men's game is somewhat lacking it's not the case for women. Football enjoys a healthy interest in US women's sports and as a result we get good athletes playing, which fosters better competition, which means better teams, which translates into the US women's team being one of the best in the world. So I tend to agree with the video and the comments that American men's soccer is getting better through a combination of increased interest, more money, and changing demographics.
