Why would anyone follow you? Barry Posner asserts that we follow people we believe are credible - competent, honest, forward-thinking, and inspirational. People will not believe the message, if they don’t believe in the messanger.
Barry Posner is the Accolti Endowed Professor of Leadership at the Leavey School of Business, Santa Clara University (located in the heart of Silicon Valley), where he served for 12 years as Dean of the School. Barry, along with his co-author Jim Kouzes, received the American Society for Training and Development’s highest award for their Distinguished Contribution to Workplace Learning and Performance. He has been named as one of the nation’s top management and leadership educators by the International Management Council, recognized as one of the Top 50 leadership coaches in America, ranked among the Most Influential HR thinkers in the world by HR magazine, and listed among the Top 75 Leadership and Management Experts in the world by Inc. magazine. He is the co-author of the award-winning and best-selling leadership book The Leadership Challenge. With over two million copies, the book has been described as a groundbreaking research study, combining keen insights with practical applications. It has been translated into more than 20 foreign languages. FAST COMPANY ranked it among the top dozen books of 2012, and it has been listed as among The Top 100 Business Books of All Time, receiving both book-of-the-year honors by the American Council of Health Care Executives and Critic’s Choice Award from the nation’s book review editors.

Barry Posner's TEDx talk on the importance of credibility in leadership is a true eye-opener. His words remind us that to lead effectively, we must first earn the trust and belief of those we lead. It's not just about what we say, but who we are as leaders that truly inspires others to follow. This talk is a powerful reminder that authentic leadership starts with credibility, and it's a message that can inspire us all to lead with integrity and purpose. 💯

Honesty , Transparency , unbiased & Empathy are the key elements of being a Leader. If you are not honest , you will be a fake & you can never be a Leader. If you are not transparent then people will loose trust in you , if you are biased then you can be a boss of small group of people but not the leader. Finally if you do not have Empathy , you will ultimately be detached from reality & will never be able to understand human nature & how it behaves in different situation.

Honesty is a top characteristic that I want from my leaders. Once I learn that someone has been dishonest with me, I lose faith in his or her ability to lead properly. Deceit is a method of control used to manipulate others. A good leader should not resort to such tactics. Thank you, sir, for this valuable research.

As a former student of Prof. Posner, I will testify he's a gifted speaker, who spent a full career on leadership. He is very clear. For decades he has worked with the former top of the Tom Peter's organization. Both the length of partnership and the status speak well of both men. Posner was the dean of a good-sized university business school in Silicon Valley. This talk asks, What do followers seek when choosing a leader? He offers four core answers: a) Honest b) Passionate, full of feeling c) Smart and Expert (in the areas where they lead) d) Forward-looking (has a plan for where to go) This is a great introduction to a well-spoken writer and teacher, a leading authority on leaders.

Barry's research on people from 70 different countries has proven that over 80% of people expect their leaders to be honest. That's the #1 quality that people want in a leader that they willingly follow. And a vast majority of people also require that their willingly-followed leaders are forward-looking, inspiring and competent. As someone who has worked with people from over 50 different countries, I can tell you that people are people the world over, and this is something that is fundamental to all kinds of people from all over Our World.

Trump doesn't lead and it wasn't leadership that got him elected. He cheats and bribes his way to the top. If you are a leader, you have lead and you continue to lead. Trump will not last because he clearly is not a true leader. What Barry is talking about is leading from the heart to other hearts. Those leaders last. Don't give up!
