Daniel Ricciardo is just three races into a crucial 2024 F1 season that was meant to propel him back into a dream Red Bull Racing seat, but is instead starting to feel like a repeat of a previous nightmare.
This hasn't been the start to 2024 that Ricciardo was hoping for at Red Bull's second team, RB. And not because the team is failing to uphold its end of the bargain.
Instead, he's been roundly outperformed by his team-mate Yuki Tsunoda - and there's an eerily similar feel to what he's said about his latest performance compared to his comments during his ill-fated spell at McLaren.

4:01 Something amiss?
5:20 What it means for Red Bull
7:18 Lawson a threat?
8:46 What about Ricciardo's conqueror?

He lost 3-1 in the races against Lawson when they both finished, Lawson was unprepared rookie, he also got destroyed in 2021 by Gasly (failing to deliver in one of the bast AT ever) and although he improved, still lost the next year, Tsunoda is definitely a solid driver now, but he remains in the bottom 5 or 6 of the grid. I put Sainz, Leclerc, Hamilton, Russell, Alonso, Albon, Max, Gasly, Ocon, Norris, Piastri and even Pérez still ahead of him.

@13Xerro

@@quentinhirschfeld9382Yeah that is a highly questionable stat. First of Zaandvort - Tsunoda was ahead by quite some margin. He was battling with Hamilton and Norris before AT decided to leave him out and cost him 20 seconds. Even then he still had a half minute on Lawson before the red flag came out to close that gap, and it still took a 5 second penalty to finally put Lawson ahead. So yes Lawson was ahead - but he most certainly wasn’t faster. Monza - Tsunoda’s blew up on the way to the grid so lets ignore that. Singapore - Tsunoda was taken out by Perez having a half hearted attempt on the opening lap. In qualifying Tsunoda was again faster his Q1 time was faster than anything Lawson set across all sessions, but Tsunoda didn’t set a Q2 time - which was his own fault. Japan - Again Tsunoda was faster, but Lawson got ahead on the opening lap. They gave Tsunoda the chance to undercut and he did so but he was unable to pull out a significant gap - so here Lawson legitmately was on Tsunoda’s pace. Qatar - Tsunoda was faster and beat him. Qatar - sprint Lawson spun. So it was 2-1 in races they finished and that is being very generous with the circumstances in that Zaandvort race. Japan is the race where Lawson did beat Tsunoda, but the rest Tsunoda was always faster, there was just always some circumstance, be it one of his own making or bad luck.

@@13Xerro 1) RACE-CRAFT is part of what makes a good F1 driver. In Zandvoort, Lawson just avoided trouble and bring the car home despite no experience of the car, being unprepared and never having drove in the rain. In Singapore, Tsunoda knows with his experience that you always leave a space just in case on the inside on an, opening lap, not saying it was his fault, but with better awareness, he would've avoided the incident nonetheless. As for Japan, Yuki was barely quicker on a track Lawson discovered, he schooled him on the first lap. 2) You have to take into consideration that Lawson arrived in the middle of nowhere, the dude was in the middle of a title fight for the title in SuperForumla, before being called due to Ricciardo's injury, literally got wingsuit in a situation he had no chance of anticipating.

I said it at the time and I'll say it again, Liam Lawson did more than enough to prove he is worthy of that seat. He is a driver who has more cards to show, whereas Daniel has shown all of his cards and is now at the tail end of his career in F1. Horner wanted him in that seat to put pressure on Perez, but honestly I think Perez will be more worried about how Carlos is performing than Daniel is.

Endurance racing is much more of a place where you can have fun and joke with your team mates you share a car with. He parties too much between events while other drivers like Max and Lando (and others) are racing in simulators at work and at home. Studying their race performances. CONSTANTLY honing their skills. You could tell it frustrated Lando when they were teammates that Daniel just didn't take his position seriously and just expected the car to change at some point so he could start winning again. Lando pulled off a few great results in that "garbage" car while Daniel was nowhere every race, every time.

@@biggusy25 people hate when you bring this up... Daniel just wasn't as serious as other drivers in his prime years. He ultimately made a bad decision in his peak but I also don't think he would've kept up with Max, at the rate Max was improving. He would've been 2nd in that team and given the way his confidence wains and affects his drive, there's a real possibility he goes down hill even worse. I just think if he would've accepted that he was better off in a mid place team getting money and being number 1, he could've kept the developmental team with Cyril and he would've had a car that didn't win, but kept him relevant a bit longer.

AT shifted the downforce balance rearwards in Abu Dhabi last year with their floor upgrade, he prefers the pointy front end and unstable rear like Max does. However unlike say, Piastri and Norris who have been on record saying how the McLaren drives isn't to their liking either, he seems unable to adapt to this balance. Similar to how Vettel struggled with cars after they lost the blown diffuser and he couldn't just launch out of corners anymore, it seems his peak performance window is extremely narrow and specific to how RBR built their car.

Daniel doesn't put in NEAR the effort off the track that other drivers do. He's stuck in the mentality that drivers of old had where they would smoke, drink and party between races, and that kind of attitude toward the sport just doesn't fly anymore. Other drivers spend literal days in the simulator between races, they are constantly honing their skills, reviewing their race performances and scrutinizing every 10th of a second they could have saved, or every lap where they could have saved their tires just a little bit more. Lando said Daniel would reserve entire floors of hotels and throw ragers all night. Do you think Max, for example, participates in that kind of over indulgent party lifestyle? The ground effect cars tend to be more understeery as well which doesn’t help his case. The Red Bull is known to be one of the few very pointy cars which explains how Ricciardo was able to impress Horner enough to be given a second chance at testing, but at this point it’s possible that his inability to adapt has sacrificed his peak ability in a car that suits his driving style

However, F1 driver especially in a midfield team can’t have this “prima donna attitude provide this kind of car to my driving style etc.” The degree of hubris and/or chutzpah of DR3 to say stopwatch is wrong after his abysmal qualifying last weekend is mindboggling. For a multi GP winner, he shouldn’t be making rookie mistakes such as exceeding track limit or spinning by himself. Unfortunately F1 with Horner adore RB3 so they’ll continue to make excuses on his behalf. Sainz deserves the RB seat, even Checo + Yuki deserve the RB seat- def not perennially underperforming full of excuses lacking critical self examination DR3.

Only quick solution I see is a 1 race chassis swap. A few years back, Mick had a cracked chassis at haas that they hadn’t noticed so surely that would be a good troubleshoot.

From what I understand, the newest ground effects cars with their necessary anti dive/squat suspension geometry have no feel/feedback that many drivers rely on. Therefore they are always a half step behind the car waiting for information that never comes. The successful drivers seem to be the avid sim racers used to driving cars with no tactile feedback. The lack of feel is something they're used to. It's known Daniel just isn't a sim race guy and he's paying the price.

That’s a really interesting point. However *many* of the race cars I’ve driven (an SCCA Mustang in particular) had very numb, vague steering. You don’t really get a lot of feedback through the wheel - it’s all in your inner ear.

TOP 10 driver? That's assuming you put one those, Sainz, Leclerc, Hamilton, Russell, Verstappen, Piastri, Norris, Ocon, Gasly, Alonso behind him. So far, he hasn't proved to be better than those drivers, neither in raw result or dominance over teammates (got comprehensively beaten by Gaslky and immediately matched by Laswon).

I'll make this very clear and simple.... DR and MV have very similar driving styles, both like a 'pointy' front end, this means they can brake a lot later, turn the car quickly and get back on the throttle.. This becomes pretty obvious when you take the Silverstone 'test' that DR did in the RB19 into account. What he's got in all other cars, doesn't suit his style. They seem to tend towards understeer and most of his teammates (LN and YT in particular) are suited to that type of set-up.

When one hits those mid 30’s most people begin to lose that ‘edge’, the fearlessness that drove them to the top of their sporting career. Other priorities such as families and staying alive, start to become more important. If you look at the other drivers, there is only Alonso who somehow defies that paradym. Even Hamilton as great as he is, has struggled in the last couple of years. There is less than a couple of seconds between first and last in qualifying and that makes a difference.

Ric’s engineer salaciously eyeing the big red ejection seat button that has the obligatory “Whatever you do, DON’T push this button!” sign ext to it with each passing week. With a great, young driver in Lawson waiting in the wings, it’s time to pull the trigger, and that’s coming from a (former) Ricciardo fan. The big Aussie smile just won’t cut it anymore.

His problem is in qualifying. He doesn't trust himself or the car enough to take more speed into the corners. His race pace is actually decent and has make up a few positions from his starting position. The VCARB is certainly not a rocket ship so he HAS to convert on qauli if he's going to score points. I love him but he has to pull his finger out now.

This really sucks to watch as a Ricciardo fan, I’ve been on the ride with him as a fan since British f3 2008. The frustrating part is he hasn’t lost his talents and speed! He has just really struggled with this generation of race car. That’s his biggest flaw it seems is his adaptability, but it’s just such a shame to see it ending like this
