Thanks for the useful information on Alliums. I have one circular garden that I have dedicated to them, but I didn't know how prolific they are. I will have to keep in mind that deadheading is a necessity so that they don't multiply even more.

I usually cut spent stems as soon as flowering on allium is done to prevent the bulb from expending energy on seed production. Better flowers next year.

Excellent point! As much as the seed heads are pretty, this is probably a better idea than to keep them on - for bigger, better blooms as you say, and because life gets busy and I'm guaranteed to miss the time to snag them before the seeds drop! Thank you for commenting! 💚

This was a timely video for me! I have some hyacinths in my front garden which have just finished flowering and also some other plants and shrubs. This year I noticed a whole bunch of bulb-type leaves really expanding into the garden. I was wondering if they were hyacinths, as I hadn't noticed them spreading before. Then I realized I had an allium there that hasn't flowered yet and all these additional plants were alliums. I also hadn't realized they would reseed like that. So now I'm digging out the ones I don't want before they intersperse into my other plants. I'll definitely be deadheading them in the future!

That's exactly what happened to me! I was wondering what all these little bulbs were and was originally happy that they were allium, but I'm still battling them years later and have been deadheading since! I hope your battle is more easily won than mine!!! At least they are nice gifts to others - with a warning label of course!

It’s funny- most gardeners want their plants to propagate and grow more to fill in and you want the opposite! lol 😉

Lol I suppose I want more control on where they propagate, and not just where the wind spreads them. I also don't want them to take over!! I'm more keen to let plants propagate willy nilly when they're native and I don't have to feel responsible for keeping them out of the creek! Thanks for watching, and for your comment! 💚

I wonder if it would be simpler to systematically cut the leaves of the alliums to the ground and avoid them taking in the energy. You may need to cut them over a certain number of years but at some point they should no longer have the energy to grow back.

That is a good point - without the leaves, the bulbs can't survive - I wonder how early I'd have to be to identify them and cut them back. As you can see, I'm snapping off many of the leaves and I mow the back, so I do wonder how early you have to be to snip them off to ensure the bulbs die off. In any case, that gives me hope for the ones I miss!!! Thank you for watching, and for the comment! 💚

I have been wanting alliums, now I know not to plant them in areas I don’t want them to spread lol What kind where they?

You can definitely plant them there, just deadhead so they don't make a million babies! I think I have a Globemaster, but I am not certain - I got it from a friend, so it's my best guess. But interestingly, the babies seem to be a different colour than the mama - not sure if that is a baby allium thing, or if it has reverted to an original species.
