My newest John Deere 855 project has some serious engine damage and before I send it off to the machine shop, I want to figure out what issues it had! This will give me a better understanding of the internals and also what I might have to look out for in the near future. Heck, maybe this engine has some weak points I didn't know about!
In this video I will have a good look at most of the major engine components like the:
-Air Intake
-Cooling System
-Cylinder Head
-Cylinder Block
-Pistons/Wrist Pins/ Con-Rods
-Oil Pump
After I browse over all the parts, I will share my thoughts about the engine failure that MIGHT have occurred! I'm not 100% sure if this is correct, but I can exclude many other factors of failure.
If you thought this video was helpful to you, please tap that like button and if you want to see me rebuild this engine, don't forget to subscribe.

Thank you for your feedback, it's always nice to know it will help fellow enthusiasts! You have very nice machines and that is correct, they are each 20HP engines. That is a good thing to do Charles, especially around this time of year when the temperatures will get warmer. If you buy new thermostats be sure to check them before installation. I've ran into a brand new thermostat that did not open! Even at boiling temperatures. With the correct maintenance your 430's will last a long time. The rebuild video will be uploaded in a couple weeks time. Enjoy your weekend and best regards -Andreas

Great videos, excellent techniques, wonderful explainations and no slang. Have a Yanmar 3TN66 ready to tear down. It is out of my 1998 JD 6x4 Diesel gator. Smokes, hard to start, and very dirty oil wise. Expect to see scoring on pistons, vavles, and cylinder walls. Air from filter takes very lone route to intake manifold. Gator bed sits on air hose and distorts it flat. Damaged to hose just taped (duct tape) and let go by original owners. I find most air cooled engines are hard to clean because of shielding to channel the air over engine. The fact your JD 855 was so dirty says owner never understood preventive maintenance and did not care. SAD to see. Would love to see video on laser cleaning one day.

Thank you very much for your valuable feedback! I really appreciate it. I believe you found a similar engine to mine in the shop. With a little bit of effort you might have yourself a great machine once you sort out the engine. Those gators are super handy for multiple tasks and I'd love to find one myself...but they tend to sell really fast if the price is right. It sure is a shame that some owners don't take care of their equipment, but they shouldn't be surprised when they hear the bill from the mechanic shop! I will share more videos about the laser cleaning very soon, I just have to get some more things sorted out behind the scenes. Thanks again and stay tuned. -Andreas

I'm glad you enjoyed this video Hank! Since the John Deere 855 is complete and running, I will be sharing videos when I put the tractor to use. I plan on sharing some snow removal videos with the John Deere 855 and the 47"Snowblower. If any issues arise, I will feature this tractor again in an upcoming video. Depending on the color of smoke (Black= Oil, White= Fuel) you might need to do what I did...but it could be something small like the Valve Seals that are just old and they let oil into the combustion chamber along the valves. Thanks for your support and thank you for your comment! It helps massively. Regards Andreas

Hey huge thanks for these videos they are super interesting , incredibly useful and easy to follow. I have one question I know your parts sourced from FridayParts and I guess these parts are not OEM yanmar - they are manufactured in China/India; Would you be able to share your thoughts on the quality of the parts? say a rebuild kit? my engine is on my boat and I am dependent on it running reliably. There is a huge difference in the price of the aftermarket and OEM parts - many thanks
@WorkshopRebuild

I'm glad you value my videos and I hope with this information you will be able to find a solution for your own engine. Aftermarket parts are never OEM, but they are manufactured to OEM standards. FridayParts offers quality components if it's bearings, seals, gaskets, pistons and cylinder sleeves. All components are backed by 3-12 month warranty, which is more than your average dealer warranty, but confirm this before ordering as I am not affiliated by them. If you were following along with the BMW engine issues, you will know that I've received horrible parts from Germany, Sweden and other EU countries. Maybe not what you expected, but I am aware that quality parts can be produced in any country. Even the ones you mentioned above. The original Yanmar (3TN75RJ) that was placed into the JD855 compact tractor lasted ~1400hours and it needed a full engine rebuild. I'm not familiar with marine engines, but would be nice if an engine would last longer than that. Let's remember that we're discussing a Japanese industrial manufacturer that supplies engines to John Deere, one of the largest agricultural machinery companies. Yet the engine still failed prematurely. This demonstrates that quality isn't consistently delivered to the end-user, underscoring the importance of making independent decisions.

This thermostat did not have the wax capsule and even though it's a more modern engine, not all thermostats have one. Even though in theory this should work, most engines overheat anyways. I got this engine running again after a full rebuild and it works flawless now! Thanks for your comment. Regards Andreas

99% of early failures of compact diesel engines like Yanmar and Kubota are due to owner neglect. Radiators fins clogging gradually over time slowly increasing the operating temperature is a major problem. Dust, dirt, grass clogging the cooling fins let’s the engine consistently run hotter than it was designed to. Regularly using compressed air is the best way to clean radiator fins . It’s better than using water but a water hose is better than nothing. Many compact diesel engines experience fuel dilution in the oil simply because of how they are designed to run in a given application. Neglecting to change the oil regularly will cause excessive wear on bearings and camshafts. Use a quality oil filter designed to operate on diesel engines. Cheap Fram filters on an expensive diesel engine is a bad idea. Same goes for the air filter. The air filter is the last line of defense for keeping dirt and sand out of your engine. A cheap Chinese knockoff is a bad idea. Lastly use good fuel filters regularly. Diesel fuel is nasty and you need good filtration to keep the goo out of your expensive injector pump. Taken care of these little engines are good for 7000 hrs.before anything major is needed but they aren’t a good idea for people who are tightwads or just lazy about maintenance.
@WorkshopRebuild

Hi there! I agree with many things you listed and it's very clear that these small diesel engines are often neglected by the owners. Keeping an engine clean is theoretically the best thing one can do, but many times other things are more important (haha)! You said that very well about the oil, fuel, and air filters. These items must be changed periodically and it's best to follow the manufacturers' instructions, hence the maintenance stickers on all pieces of equipment that suddenly vanish over time. Thanks for leaving your insight and valuable feedback for others to read! Regards Andreas

Great work. But I'm rebuilding a Yanmar 3tnv88 3 cylinder engine and now can't understand why the deal about timing on the fuel injection pump!!
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! The 3TNV88 is very similar to the 3TNV82A I'll be rebuilding in the next couple of weeks. In this video the Yanmar 3TN75RJ has 5 big lines and 4 smaller ones in between, on the timing cover plate. The manual states to lineup the injection pump line with the 2nd big line from the top! So number one is on the top and number 5 on the very bottom. With this adjustment my 3TNV75RJ is running very well! The Yanmar 3TNV82A only lines up with one line, but inside the timing cover you can adjust the timing gear with 4 smaller hex cap bolts. THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED, because this should be set from factory. Let me know which version of timing you have and maybe I can help out. Regards Andreas

I have a 3TNV80F that does not get many hours on it - what do you recommend in terms of service interval? Should I be changing the oil and antifreeze before the recommended hours? When not in use, I only start the engine every 3-4 months - is that okay, or do you think that will cause damage because oil comes down with gravity? Thanks!
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild Жыл бұрын
I would be looking at the oil and oil pressure more often than the antifreeze, if I were in your shoes. Check the oil dipstick before your initial startup and make sure you have enough oil pressure. Even after sitting for months, you should be just fine. Oil filters can break down over time on equipment and I would change filters more frequently than what the manual says. After that just top off the oil to be at the full mark. Antifreeze on the other hand usually last longer...or at least from what I have experienced so far. I hope this helps😃👍🏽

Very informative. Great content and detail. Well done. I've just bought a Kawasaki Mule with a 3 cyl Yanmar engine suffering from low compression. 1. Would a honing and new ring set help? 2. Or should I get it rebored next oversize with new pistons, rings & bearings? I plan to use this Mule on my 4 acre property. Small tasks.
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild 10 ай бұрын
Hi Paul, thank you for your feedback and for your overly positive comment! Those Kawasaki Mules are very good machines and they are REALLY handy to have on any property. Answers to your questions: 1) Yes, honing and installing a new ring set would help greatly. You will want to confirm your ring-gap in each cylinder-bore to make sure it isn't too small or too big. If it's too small you can break piston rings, and if it's too large you could have low-compression again (even though you have a new set of rings). 2) Machining your block involves more work in general and it becomes more expensive. Once you remove your cylinder head, you should be able to identify the issue. So that should be your first step. Most cylinder wear is towards the top of the bore, where the pistons have most "slop". About 1/2" below the head surface, you might be able to feel an edge. This is highest point for the top compression ring within the cylinder bore and most wear can be found here. I found a great illustration for this wear: www.newkidscar.com/car-repair/causes-of-cylinder-bore-wear/ If you feel a big edge, than your cylinder bore might be very worn, which means you might want to consider larger pistons. If you only feel a subtle edge, than a quick hone will be just fine, along with new rings. I hope this helps you with your engine repair and if you have any other questions, feel free to send me an email. I'll try my best to help from a distance. Regards Andreas

I'm about to replace my head gasket on these, it's for a thermo king unit. Had a feeling these engines weren't too reliable long term. Now I'm getting nervous the block could be warped too.
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild Жыл бұрын
Interesting, that must be a newer Thermo King unit! I have one out back somewhere, but that is an inline 4 with an Isuzu engine. I believe those are a bit older. These Yanmar engines on the other hand are very reliable, BUT: you must keep up on service. Yanmar recommends filter and fluid changes at 250hours of run-time. If you keep the radiator clean and keep up with service, you should easily get 4000+ hours out of it. Especially since your engine is setup as a constant rpm engine (similar to generators). I hpe with a little bit of effort you can reuse your engine and that it lasts you for a long time. Thanks for tuning in! Regards Andreas

So my huge guess is... someone used starting fluid to start the lil guy. I'm guessing the little bits of metal on the piston is ring metal. That piston would have been the center or #2 cylinder. If that was the case it was blowing oil out the crank case breather and they tore it down. I didn't catch whether you had the rings on the pistons or if they were bare like in the video. Obviously all that dirt on the radiator isn't good either! I would expect to see more damage if it was from heat? I guess the ether usually pops a hole in the top of the center piston but if that one with the chips in it was #2 it would fit the ether theory. Blown ring and she lost her pep. Hope you get it going again! I might be completely wrong but it's kind of fun sharing in the mystery! Best of luck, thank you for sharing!
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild Жыл бұрын
Your speculation is great and I really appreciate your thoughts! It's really hard to say if starting fluid was used by the previous owner...but it is very likely, HAHA! I did not share a close-up of the piston rings, but I cleaned them up too and there was NO DAMAGE to them, nor was there any major wear. I could have almost reused them the way they looked (since the original engine only had 1400 hours, it was just broken in for a Yanmar). The dirt around the radiator and all the dirt around the engine was bad. Looking at the crankshaft seals, they were probably leaking oil and that's why the engine collected so much debris. I had a chat with my machinist and he also pointed towards a heat issue. It's not always easy to identify an engine failure, especially since I did not disassemble this myself. The engine was already in parts as I got it. That is correct, ether damage with damage rings and cause failures within the bore and along the pistons eventually. In this case it still looked pretty healthy, except for the excess wear towards the top of each cylinder (tapered bore from bottom to top)! I have already rebuilt this engine and the John Deere 855 runs awesome! Thank you for sharing this comment!! Regards Andreas

Do you know why the oil pressure would jump right up to 45 lbs but in 10 minutes drop to 0 yanmar 4t84T- n three cylinder Diesel
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild Жыл бұрын
Hi, This could happen because of these three factors: not enough oil in your system (make sure you have enough oil in your system), old oil filter (your oil filter is clogged or internally damaged, causing the flow of oil to be restricted), check your oil pressure regulator (on this yanmar 3TN75RJ diesel engine it is located right on the block where the oil filter screws on. Internally you will have a spring and over time this spring can get damaged or loose it's strength. This is probably the case and if youthink your spring is too weak you can always back it up with a washer or purchase a brand new one.) I hope this helps and if you figureout the cause, please let me know! I'm interested to know what went wrong. Regards Andreas

Great stuff here, thank you. I'm rebuilding a 4k+ hour 3tn66 out of a Gator and find the timing marks rather confusing. The crankshaft gear has an "A" mark, the idler gear has "A:, "B", and "C" marks, the camshaft gear has a "B" mark and the fuel pump gear just has a stamped dimple. As much as I rotate the engine, none of the marks line up exactly. The tech manual only mentions "timing marks", nothing about various letters. Did you ever see anything like this
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild Жыл бұрын
Hi there! I‘m happy to hear that you‘re giving your 3TN66 a fresh rebuild! Correct, on the idler gear you‘ll have „A/B/C“ marks, that you have to line up with the corresponding gears. Once you have the idler gear in place and you start to rotate your engine, it‘ll take many rotations until you line them up again! The important part is that you line them up correctly the first time around. After that, make sure the two idler gear bolts are torqued to spec and that the injection pump gear is torqued too. I hope this helps, Regards Andreas😃👍🏽

I'm embarrassed to say, it became obvious to me once I stepped back from the situation. The timing marks do indeed line up at installation, but once the gears are installed you won't see them aligned again for many many revolutions. If I was a math wizard I guess it would make sense. That said, Thank You again for the knowledge and insights you bring to all things mechanical.

I will be doing a tear down of my Yanmar 3TN66C engine to investigate possible dusting and smoking issue. You are working on a John Deere 855 tractor and its engine but from whom will you be ordering your engine gasket kit from? Online kits include pictures of cylinder sleeves which the 3TN66C does not have. That concerns me about kits from China. Is your kit to come from Yanmar or John Deere?

That's a great idea Tom! I hope your engine can be rebuilt, because those gators are so nice to have! The engine kit is from a 3rd party supplier and I will share all the details in the rebuild video. That is correct, the engine kit I received had sleeves too, but they are DRY SLEEVES. The advantage of dry sleeves is that you can bore the engine to 0.20" over and insert a sleeve, which is then machined from the inside again to achieve the original bore size! Diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines. Diesel is a more concentrated type of fuel, as for gasoline, it is basically made up of 20+ different chemicals and not all of these chemicals are burned in such a short period of time. It doesn't matter what you try to burn, they cycle-time is just too quick to burn everything. Turbos on the other hand do not add to the efficiency of any engine. They tend to pressurize the air coming into the engine and therefore you can have a smaller displacement engine with more HP/Torque. This is knowledge is widely spred over the internet, but you spoke about 3 cylinder diesel engine in your first comment and I would like to know what you meant by that. Best regards
