According to Elrond's own account in The Lord of the Rings, when the Last Alliance of Elves and Men and Sauron were at war, Isildur cut off Sauron's finger and took the One Ring. But then he refused to destroy it in Orodruin, where it had been made. So why didn't Elrond destroy the One Ring there that day when he had the chance?

He would have had to kill Isildur to destroy the ring and that would have led to a war between the elves and men.

I would go a step further and state that the ring would not only make Isildur refuse to destroy it, but that it would empower Isildur to kill Elrond and Cirdan. The ring is not passive. It has a will to survive, a will to return to Sauron, and all the power necessary to accomplish both things.

If Mt. Doom erupted after the ring was destroyed Elrond could have just said Isildur died trying to escape 😂. But that's assuming Elrond would have known about the eruption ahead of time.

I think it was stated that at the time Sauron was defeated that Elrond and Cirdan believed that no good could come from Isildur holding onto the ring, keeping in mind that the nine rings given to men had corrupted them into the Nazgul, they may of envisioned a similar fate for Isildur. From Gandalf's conversion with Elrond when the former discovered that the Necromancer was Sauron, Elrond did state that he had a suspicion that Sauron might return with the ring still around but wasn't sure and in hindsight, should of done more to make sure the ring was destroyed.

As we saw with Sam in the tower, whoever possess the One Ring becomes imposing and commanding. Elrond was intimidated by Isildur.

Yeah not really sure if he knew Sauron would return or not but the last point that it would have sparked a massive war between men and elves is most likely what kept him from doing anything drastic.

Just a tiny correction: Elrond finally did get the chance to convince Isildur to give up the ring to be destroyed, but the King was sadly ambushed on his way to Rivendell.

If Elrond indeed thought that he would get another chance to discuss the Ring issue with Isildur again, he was correct in the sense that according to Unfinished Tales' account, Isildur shortly before his death decided to surrender the Ring to the Keepers of the Three. I'm glad that Elrond did not participate in what would be allies turning on each other because they cannot agree how to share the spoils of war. Elrond would not follow the self-destructive path of the Fëanor's house.

Because....we wouldn't have had a story is really what it comes down to because considering the war they'd just fought, the loss and devastation, there is no way Elrond doesn't just chuck Isildur into the fire along with the ring....sparing one life led to countless lives lost.

Maybe Elrond was smart enough to know that trying the seize the ring by violence for any reason under any circumstance is like trying to extinguish a fire with napalm. The ring would always turn the violence to its own ends. It would never ever work. Doing it on mount doom during the middle of a battle is even worse. Whether it would have sparked a war between men and elves, either that or something else just as bad would have happened. This is the Boromir error - treating the ring like an ordinary object, where you can just take it, use it to your ends, and put it away - it doesn't work like that. The great and powerful couldn't have destroyed it by being powerful, it required mercy, patience, humility, faith. Then evil destroyed itself.

Fairly obvious Isildur was a King, he had taken the Ring himself in battle, so the Ring was his to dispose of. If Elrond had taken the Ring by force, it would have been war between men and elves. Elrond is not able to see the future, so he had no idea what the outcome of Isildur's decision would be. If you do not know for certain what the future will be, it is impossible to act.particularly in such a drastic way.

Let’s save a way too long video and get right to the answer: “Because Isildur had it.” Elves do not attack allies, nor do they impose their wills on others, nor do they, even in the face of great folly, change this basic nature. They wanted it gone like hell, but weren’t willing to turn on Isildur, and eventually any questioning Dunedain, to see it done. Simple. There I saved you a video.

Exactly. And Elrond knew that the Ring feeds on evil, had he attempted to take the Ring from Isildur through force he himself could succumb to its power and be ensnared by it. For that same reason Galadriel and Gandalf refused.

The events that occurred in the movie are not the events that occurred in the text. The movie made out Isildur to be a weak leader who instantly gave in to the influence of the One Ring. That’s not what Tolkien wrote…Isildur was killed en route to destroy the Ring.

Why didn't Gandalf show Elrond Bilbo's ring when they stopped off in Rivendell on the way back to the Shire from the Lonely Mountain? Surely a ring that could make you invisible would be concerning, especially since both Gandalf & Elrond knew about the Ring and Elrond had actually seen it before! Even if Gandalf thought it was a lesser ring, Elrond SHOULD have been shown it!

Let‘s remember that when Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, the ring was just a device to make him invisible and allow him to be a skillful burglar. It wasn‘t until later that Tolkien made it the One Ring and attached so much importance to it. Gandalf knew Bilbo was hiding something, but he didn‘t know what exactly the secret was. In The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf describes how he had to pry Bilbo‘s secret out of him, but again, this was after Tolkien‘s decision to make something special out of the ring.

I always thought it was because the Ring was claimed as "weregild" by Isildur, which would've been quite a sacred thing. Elrond would have no right to force the destruction since the Ring was not his. And since Elrond was a goody two shoes, he did not do anything else except tell Isildur off.

Well, there is one thing reinforcing your opinion that if Isildur survived a little more, then Elrond would be able to persuade him to destroy The One Ring. The Ring had abandonded Isildur soon after. And it knew better than anyone whether Isildur would be persuaded into destroying it or not. Isildur was, after all, The High King. He could take The One Ring wherever The Ring would whisper him to go. A very convenient bearer. So why did The Ring decide to abandon him? I'd say it's because Isildur haven't completely forgotten Elrond's advice and The Ring knew it. Also there is one more reason Eldond didn't take The One Ring by force you failed to mention. If Elrond did it, he'd open himself to The Ring's power. Because The One Ring works far stronger on those who have taken him from the previous owner by force. This is why The Ring had trouble with Frodo. Because Frodo didn't take The Ring from Bilbo by force. He received it as a gift.

Simple answer. It’s a made up story and you have to have things happen to move the story forward. lol. People need to stop looking for answers to these silly questions. This is how he wrote it and so this is why it is the way it is. Have to have some kind of drama to move the story forward.
