No Intro - PRO techniques from an experienced colourist - Why do Film Luts look Bad in DaVinci Resolve. There is a BIG MISTAKE lots of people make when applying the film luts - fixed here in 5 minutes.
*Just to clarify throughout I mention Cineon as 'Colour Space' - I mean Cineon as 'Gamma'. It is not a colour space change but a gamma curve change. I know it has confused a few people, and understand so clarifying here - pressure of recording for KZfaq - hopefully the main take away of this episode is still apparent.

Thanks. few addictions to this method: 1) you "should" put the "resolve tone mapping" to "none" so the transform is more mathematically correct, this is a change from v16 where the default was "none" 2) if you have a log input you can go straight from log to cineon log, for example if you have alexa log files, you can do alexa logC/logC to rec709/cineon log. 3) you can (should?) add a small highlights corrections to smooth the shoulder of the curve, those luts are particularly aggressive in clipping the highlights 4) I recommend a node after the lut that only deals with the flare of the lut, you can make the output black a bit more intense just by lowering the shadows. a grayscale before the lut will shows where the true black sits.

Hi Walter, Yes, seems the Resolve tone mapping with default wide gamut needs looking at on a node basis. Your point 2).. I get..trying to keep the workflow here easier for the vast majority of my subscribers .. I think my workflow helps that here, but appreciated technically of course. 3 and 4 are great tips - appreciated and I see the clouds clipped - on a real grade I would fix pre 709 CST - I wasn't intending to get too detailed in this episode - its hard to know where to stop on KZfaq to keep attention and not lose people - appreciate the notes though. This was of course an example grade. Thank you for contributing - so much appreciated. Hard to balance going too deep on KZfaq - I think that is where Masterclasses are king! Watch this space. !! All the best, and thanks for contributing. Darren.

always great to explain these things. there are QUITE a few people who think LUTS are "filters" and obviously they arent (well, in a sense they are but you know what I mean). I had a friend who made a short and showed it to me. He was literally applying the film LUTS on top of rec709 and just left them dark and crunched. I said "what the hell happened?" and he said "you dont understand, these are 'film LUTS' and this makes it more cinematic. this is how films in the 70's were shot!". I explained the basics of color grading to him and he was like "ooohhhh" ha ha. Don't ever underestimate the importance of these "simple" tutorials. they are anything but. You touch on things that many people ignore, as they've usually gotten to a particular link in the chain and never go further because they don't understand the importance. This is where you come in:). cheers!

The node prior to the Film emulation LUT gives much more control. So I usually tend to put three nodes. In first I convert image to Rec.709 using DCT. then I put another node where I use Lift, Gamma, Gain to adjust image and then again I convert it to Log as you shown and put the Emulation LUT.

Finally, someone shows us how to dial it back properly...I've been trying to figure this out for some time now. Interestingly, some people insist on putting the CST, and film LUT near the start, with maybe some adjustments in between, but sat, look, and other nodes after it all, not before. I think I prefer it at the end, like you did it. Anyhoo, thanks for clarifying this procedure for me.

Well, well, well - up to the very last step with the compound node and the key output - I thought that I knew everything about that. So a big little lesson there for me. Thanks Darren. When I thought that the film emulation was too contrasty I tended to try to pull some contrast out. This method you use is a better and faster choice. I think that people might be confused as to why the emulations work on some things and not on others. The reason that happens is because there quite a few LOG gammas curves that are based on Cineon gamma. So someone may have tried it directly on Arri log C, or Vlog, or Slog-3, and it looked pretty good without doing any CST. I always forget about using the compound node, and this is good application of why I should be using it. Thanks again.
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 3 жыл бұрын

The contents are gold in your channel, they are brief and on point every time. I was just wondering can you do an episode about color management?

@@DarrenMostyn Thanks for the answer! I just stumbled a video of yours using Asus Proart monitor and i just bought a one recently. So i was just wondering, can you do a detailed color space usage and color management episode? I know i'm asking much but your insights are really precious! Thanks again!

Why not just choose cineon log on the output of the first cst? Is there a difference between doing that and adding a second cst and selecting the output to be cineon? Is the only benefit being able to compound those two together?
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamie. Yes you could work like that - actually is a good workflow. The difference is I may want to key in 709, not cineon, so I allow some nodes to do that. Also, this episode is to show that you need that gamma space...it's not a dedicated node tree episode. Good to hear from you.

@@DarrenMostyn Hi, I'm just wondering if having a node with a cst from log to 709, and then another node with a cst going from 709 to cineon is destructive? Aren't you potentially throwing away info when you go to 709, that isn't going to come back when you go to Cineon? I can't help but feel that you're better off with one node going from log to cineon? Just trying to get my head round all this stuff!

Awesome!! would you ever consider doing a more in depth video discussing working with rec709 vs logc or aces with resolve color dials? how it affects the feel but also technical settings on color node level and project settings page.

Straight to the point and fantastic tips as always. What are the advantages of using CST and not conversion LUTS? Thanks Darren! I'm already subscribed to your mailing list :)
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing, appreciated. CST is 32 bit floating point calculation, LUTs are not so need to be used more cautiously!
@leveluppictures5794
@leveluppictures5794 3 жыл бұрын
Do you have to color transform back into Rec709 after applying the LUT? Or does the project setting being at Rec709 take that into account when being exported? Also, why not use the Aces Transform instead of CST?

I am in love with your videos. Thank you, Darren! The only thing I don't get is why you didn't add one extra node to the compound to get you from the cineon film log back to gamma 2.4?
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 9 ай бұрын
because the LUT applied automatically takes you to REC709. It is designed to go cineon to FILM LOOK and REC709 in one move. Hope that helps,

Very interesting as always ! Two questions : .When a CST is inside a compound node, is the corresponding "colourspace/gamma" only applied to that node, or does it also apply to the following operations and renders ? .Is this recipe be applied for all the "film looks" LUTs of Davinci Resolve, or only for that LMT Kodak Print emulation ?
