There’s good ones, but most sequels are bad. Is there a reason so many don’t out-do the original?

You missed what I think may be the biggest: Motivation. With an original product there's passion, or a want to tell a story, or express yourself artistically. The motivation with a sequel is, more often than not, money. This creates something hollow and meaningless. The best sequels were usually motivated by a genuine desire to continue the story.
@HalfDemonInuyasha

And that can often tie in with one of the others mentioned. Lately, a number of sequels (for an overall popular franchise or movie series) have come out when no one really asked for them and I'm sure that the largest motivator for it is hoping for an easy cash grab. Of course, it's understandable in general as the film industry is still a business and businesses want to make profits, but at the same time, if you only make an average or worse film, then chances are that they won't make nearly as much money as they could have if they just put in a bit of extra effort and money into the attempt. Look at Jaws for example. The making of that film went over budget several times, IIRC, yet the payoff was enormous.

I did not like Terminator 2 at all. It was my least favorite movie in the series. Cash grabs are how movies are made now, which to me seems all of them are rather terrible. I wish people explored more; that's how good movies are made.

Mr. Critic, I do believe you've missed the most important part of what makes a bad sequel- not having a reason or purpose to make a sequel. Too many sequels are made not to add to the story or expand upon the material, but just to capitalize off of the original.

Evil Dead 2 was better than the first one though and that was closer to a remake than a sequel. The Friday the 13th movies barely connect at all, but they're fun movies. Some sequels can work if they never plan to have a deep story to begin with

“not having a reason or purpose to make a sequel” That pretty much hits the nail on the head as to why many sequels suck. Plus after a certain number of sequels the franchise just becomes bland, cheapened & tasteless.

I think either when it's a parody, like Shrek or Deadpool, or when it adds to the relatability of a character. Take Clerks for example. Two bored shopkeepers talk about movies. It's an everyday activity for an everyday man, like we also had on boring days at work. When it fits in the movie's world, it can add humanity of a character. Tony Stark or Peter Parker would be also more distant without them mentioning movies, because references like these are part of everyday human communication. Where they don't work is when a movie is set to a world where these reverences don't belong. You don't mention Star Trek in Middle Earth, or Harry Potter in Warcraft, because they're set in a world where they wouldn't exist.

It's like how when The Smurfs did it, it's bad because they're from another world so why would they know pop culture references from our world? And then there's Sonic the Hedgehog, they showed how Sonic has been living in our world for years so it makes more sense for him to make pop culture references.

That's not the reason they took so long though. For Finding Dory they just didn't get the idea for a sequel for years. For the Incredibles 2, Brad Bird kept delaying it because he wanted to work on other things, and he wanted the perfect script and story.

Great or not, nothing in Finding Nemo pointed at a sequel, Dory may have been a good film, but totally unnecesary. When a sequel comes out SO much longer after the original, it screams cash grab. I mean who the hell asked for a sequel about that forgetful blue dut? I liked Finding Nemo, but at the end.... I felt that the story had been told, that there was no loose ends and no reason to expect more. Same with Incredibles. Sure you can argue it takes time to get good ideas.. but still, I can't help but feel a tad suspicious.

@Crow_Smith
@Crow_Smith 2 жыл бұрын
Idk about the series specifically [since objectively there are pretty good Matrix sequels] I will agree. Making a sequel to a movie/story that had lots of unanswered questions is okay. One that wrapped up well is bad. Especially when you have to say a bunch of stuff the previous movie said/did is a lie, was a false narrative etc. Now that's good for movies that end on a way too positive note for the world/story they're telling. Sure, it's good to say "That was all a lie/dream/the plan that didn't work" - and even the reverse of too dark/etc and it being a lie is also good. But to take elements that were totally fine and made the story end and go "Nah this is bs now" just to write a new story with the same world/characters is bad story telling. I mean they could literally say "Despite the happily ever after ending, it turned out that because of unseen thing no one could've predicted, our happy ending was cut short" but to just be like "actually the happy ending never was" is a bad way to write a sequel. And too many movies do this, Star Wars Prequels have this issue for example. Example of one that COULD do it [but definitely shouldn't be made] is The Graduate ... due to lingering too long [or so the story goes] on the scene of the couple laughing, we see the smiles fade. That changes the story to them realizing what they just did. So we know they DON'T get a happy ending due to that subtle bit. Theoretically [again no one should] a movie could be made about how that ending leaves them stuck in the exact life they were trying to avoid having. A cautionary piece about how sometimes that impulsiveness and decisions like that can lead exactly to the world you were trying to avoid, when maybe the path you were avoiding would've taken you where you wanted to be. That one small scene leaves it up to a potential story to tell HOWEVER it also tells it's story perfectly and it doesn't NEED to be followed up.

I really have to disagree when it comes to Home Alone 2 - the change in scenery makes a massive difference. Home Alone was set in Kevin's, well, home turf - he knew his house inside-out, he had a lot of prep time to set traps, and the context was simple - he was defending his home from invaders. In Home Alone 2 however, Kevin is in unfamiliar territory and he has to think on his feet, on top of that he's not defending something that's his but something he has a sentimental attachment to, something he doesn't have any obligation to defend that he chooses to defend anyway because it means something to him. So I don't think it's fair to say that it's the same movie in a different location, because in this case changing the location changes a lot about the movie.

Robert Zemeckis said what I think is probably the most brilliant thing about sequels in movie history. I'm paraphrasing, but the gist of it is that "When you make a movie and no one knows about it, its your baby and you can do what you want. But when you make a sequel, its very difficult because everyone has an opinion. Consciously or sub-consciously, people are writing their own sequels in their heads, and you can't please them all."

3:18 "Complain about poorly written dialogue" when it's litteraly that scene that saves Jar-Jar for me. That scene and dialogue between him and Padme are really good and so much clever than you think. It's not just about him trying to cheer her up and giving her the idea to use the Gungans to fight back. It's Jar-Jar showing concern for his people, who banished him, and the Naboo, who dislike him because he's a Gungan. So much compassion from a "stupide annoying frog-man" and so much insight. "We're not going down without a fight. We are great warriors, we have a great army. That's the reason you don't like us, I think." He's smart enough to understand why there's a friction between the two people of his planet. Because one is peaceful, opposed to war and all its aspects and the other proud of its fighting capabilities and martial honor. But he cares for both and is genuinely sad about that. That movie was made in USA, a country where pro guns/war are often in conflict with pro peace. Do you see the subtext here? Do you see Jar-Jar motherf***ing Binks trying to make you understand that as part of the same people you shouldn't dislike each other because of a difference of opinion?

The key thing to remember when making a sequel is "what was the original about?", a question not to be confused with "what happened in the original?" Successful sequels remember that first question and give a variation on what the original did. Unsuccessful sequels forget to ask that question.Examples here might be illustrative, so let's go with the Shrek series of films. In the first one, Shrek makes a bargain with Lord Farquaad to get his swamp back and heads off with an annoying donkey named Donkey to rescue a princess. That's what happens. What this is all about is that looks don't matter, that you can't rely on others' opinions for your own happiness and that you have to accept yourself for who you are. In Shrek 2, though the plot is quite different, the story is fundamentally about the same things. The first two Shrek films were highly regarded, but the third, which is mostly about parenting fears, was widely seen as a massive step down, and it's not a coincidence. Characters are designed to help convey what the story's about, no what the plot dictates, so when you dramatically shift the former, the it's an awkward fit that people don't respond to.But it's also important not to make a blatant retread. The Hangover 2 was generally savaged by critics for being the exact same movie as the first, which had been generally well-reviewed. The key to a good sequel is that it's a variation on the theme of the first. There are plenty of other ways you can mess up a sequel, but most of them can be balanced out - this one can't be.

Very excellent type up here! Just wanted to say that... Another comment I saw on here that made a good point was that its easier to enjoy a sequel if you haven't seen the original...I think this is very true of DBZ for instance. People who grew up on just DBZ tend to like it better than people who watched it from DB first.

Take the Alien franchise. First one was horror, but James Cameron decided the only way to make a sequel work was for more action and heroism, and he was right. Contrast with _Taken 2_, where, using their genius minds, it is decided that the best way to develop the franchise is -- get ready -- _another takening!_

To be fair to Home Alone 2, one of my favorite scenes is when they are playing chess on the stairs with the paint cans. Where they know the trick he's going to do, because he's done it before, but then at the end of the scene Kevin outwits them and has a 3rd swinging item big enough to knock both of them down.

As a movie in general, I agree that it is good. But as far as sequels go, it's run of the mill. To me, Home Alone 2 is a Super Mario Galaxy 2 kind of sequel; while something like The Empire Strikes Back is a Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask kind of sequel. Both are good; arguably better than their predecessors, but one of them is certainly trying harder to be something more.

I don't mind since this is one of my pet peeves about Hollywood. I can never get tired of someone criticizing how unimaginative, agenda-driven, and overpaid they are - using "free money", government favors and tax-funded largesse to make otherwise unprofitable projects "profitable". It's not a generational bias; the baseline quality of work is really low no matter what generation you're from - which is unsurprising since if you allow mediocrity to survive (let alone prosper), you end up getting more of it, while the true achievers get the shaft.
@Terrekain
@Terrekain 7 жыл бұрын
Appropriately, this is one of Nostalgia critic's greatest draws; the dumbing down and "globalization" of Hollywood means that as Hollywood has attempted to "appeal" to billions of people, and as it no longer has the motivation to produce a quality product, that quality has nose-dived as you might expect it to. We are long gone from the days when Sylvester Stallone was in poverty, was offered $20,000 for his Rocky script, and bet on himself by refusing to sell out (even though that was an unimaginable money at the time, not to mention to him personally), and demanded that he be cast as the lead. Nowadays, a script writer and actor like Stallone would have no negotiating leverage whatsoever, would never have seen the light of day, would have had his work stolen by thieves like Spielberg with his army of lawyers, would have been replaced in his own script by sub-standard Spielberg cronies and actors, would never have been denied licenses needed to film by government cronies, refused tax-write-offs and audited by Hollywood's political friends in Washington, etc, etc, etc. Ask yourself, does the corporate culture of Hollywood do this because they have to? That they need to turn the market into this socialist wasteland that mirrors of the Soviet Socialist Republics ...because if it were up to the market, they wouldn't survive, let alone prosper?
@Terrekain
@Terrekain 7 жыл бұрын
*would have been denied licenses needed to film by government cronies. Btw, by driving up the cost of production, any minnows who try to break into the industry are de-facto cut out of the market unless the monopolists allow them to...aka the minnows have no negotiating leverage. Operating licenses, permits, insurance, political contributions - and these are not just contributions as tracked by the FEC, but billion dollar industries of buying influence through media channels and under the table bribes, which people like Spielberg and other corporatists are notoriously blase about. If you or I spent anything on close to the millions Spielberg spent on Obama's campaign, we'd be audited, our personal lives would be held under a microscope, and we'd be forced out of business or lose our jobs in the real world. It happens all the time, has been happening for decades now in fact, but the most public attention this ever got was when the IRS got caught during the Obama administration against some right-wing groups, after which the head of the IRS and FBI promptly destroyed the servers, the laptops, and any other evidence (including refusing to investigate the destruction of evidence, never mind the original crime). People in Hollywood after getting away with that episode REALLY ratcheted up the shenanigans, discarding any pretense of spending millions (in fact, collectively billions) in their political advocacy, while the rest of Americans are shut out of the political process.

HEY!...clerks 2 was a worthy if not great sequel. While yes the original is better in many ways the second one just feels "bigger". In the first film, its simply just in the quick stop. Nothing wrong with that as it pulls it off as giving you a feeling of it being "Just another work day" with a few bumps along the day. However the sequel not only does that but it adds so much more. The donkey show, the go cart, the jail. It expands on the background of the characters and evolves the story of their lives.

Well the film itself as said isn't as good as the original but its damn close. I praise it for its re-watchability, and the quotability. The first film however only has the second of those two qualities. The only thing in my opinion that the first film has against the second is the fact that it was Kevin Smith's first. He made that film on a shoestring budget of 230,000 USD. All be it. it is in black and white but it pulls it off. The first relies on dialogue more than just showing than telling. Like in the second film, the montage scene when Becky drives off somewhere and Dante goes to follow her. There is not one line of dialogue in that scene aside from the song. Even without it you can see the thought that their in, in that scene.

YES! Admittedly, I'm one of those who likes the live action Grinch film, but I totally understand why most others older than me don't (I was at the right age at the right time when it came out). And I totally understand why Doug and Rob don't like it, they've explained their reasons, and I respect it. However, he keeps digging at Clerks 2, but hasn't gone into depth as to why he doesn't like it. I would love to see a full review or a real thoughts on it. To me, the film shows our characters as they naturally progressed over a period of years (meaning, not really at all), at a turning point in their lives and friendship. They spend the day dealing with it in there own ways until they finally have to decide what they want to do with the rest of their lives and weigh it against society's expectations of them. Also, I freakin love Elias! Bless his heart!

Honestly, I loved Dark Knight Rises. And no, I'm no DC fanboy - my one and only introduction to Batman was Batman Begins, so Bale is *my* image of Batman. I loved it for the Tale of Two Cities allusions and imagery. *This* is actually what "inspired by" should mean, not - we found a book and decided to make a movie about it, but the movie was too far away from the source material. It was just enough through the movie, that when they out-right quoted from it at the end, it was this awesome moment of confirmation that I hadn't been imagining it throughout. :D I mean, I get what people didn't like, but I feel like a lot of that was *becuase* of the TotC connections. It may have made it a lesser comic book movie in the eyes of the fans, but I loved it for the literary connections. And I loved it for the way it ended an epic. The first movie starts in the light, then plunges into the darkness, the second forced you to sit in and contemplate that darkness, and then the third really was a rise from that dark place. There was so much more to Bruce climbing out of the hole than just climbing out of a random hole in the ground. It's one of my most favorite moments in the trilogy for that reason - his decision to rise out of the darkness that has consumed him and his life for so many years. Are there cheesy parts? Sure. Are there inconsistencies? Sure. But that's actually part of the genre Nolan is working in - it's really tied to gothic literature - stories like Dorian Grey or Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It's more about communicating emotions, ideas, characters, than telling a story without holes or silly leaps of logic.

Home Alone 2 is one of the most underrated sequels of all time. Just because a sequel is gulity of "too much repeating", doesn't automatically make that sequel bad. Terminator 2 was LITERALLY the 1st film all over again, but with a few different story elements thrown in, and people consider it one of the greatest sequels of all time. Why? Because it gave us more of what we loved from the first film, so "repeating" can be a good thing.

+Kool Keith Productions Terminator 2 is a fantastic film, but I get the feeling that if it was made nowadays I don't think it would've been praised as much. I can just imagine people nowadays whining about stuff like "WAAH, IT SUCKS! WHY DID THEY PUT IN AN ANNOYING KID TO BE THE MAIN CHARACTER? THEY TURNED THE TERMINATOR INTO A GOOD GUY AND THAT RUINS THE WHOLE FRANCHISE! THE HAPPY ENDING SUCKED! THEY ONLY MADE SARAH CONNER A BADASS COS THE FILM MAKERS HAVE SOME FEMINIST AGENDA TO MAKE MEN LOOK INFERIOR!"

I don't know why the NC doesn't like Clerks 2? I know it's his opinion, but the sequel to Clerks did a great job continuing the story in a meaningful, and true to the source material way. That's my thoughts on the subject.
@carlrood4457
@carlrood4457 7 жыл бұрын
I'd say its main problem is that so much time has passed and the characters haven't changed a bit. While it's understandable for someone in their early 20's to have no direction, it's pathetic when in their early 30's. The film tries to make this point, but it still doesn't do anything to indicate the characters experienced any growth in 10 years, but now I'm supposed to believe it takes them a day to finally get their shit together when they've apparently shown no such ability for a decade. That's not realistic growth. That's making the sequel 10 years too late. The original was pretty much designed to appeal to people in a certain age range. The problem is those people moved on by the time of the sequel and the people in that range just see a movie about older people behaving like they're still younger.

Carl Rood I can agree with that completely! While it's still my favorite of Kevin Smith's movies, I can see where some flaws are (same with their cartoon series). Personally I do know of such slackers like the for in that movie who hadn't changed much since high school even into their 30s so that wasn't as far-fetched, but the ex machina of them having the money to suddenly get their lives together was a in-joke from a whole other movie that wasn't even mentioned until the end of the film was the biggest negative. I hadn't seen Clerks 1 before seeing Clerks 2, so the gripe that little had changed for Dante & Randell wasn't as apparent to me, but both movies do ultimately have the same lesson to them which is another legit complaint
@Velkhana22
@Velkhana22 7 жыл бұрын
Carl Rood The thing is, they *didn't* get their shit together and grow in the end in the same way people normally do in films. They went right back to their old jobs doing the same exact thing, they simply owned the place instead of working for someone else. There was personal growth, but most of it was about finding happiness in a monotonous job they could enjoy instead of one they hated. They owned it instead of being controlled by it. It's a hell of a lot more realistic than a fleeting "turn your life around" ending, in my opinion.
@Velkhana22

Exactly. It's actually depressing to see there's been no growth in a decade. The guys in Mallrats did more maturing in an afternoon. It becomes difficult to believe Dante and Randall would suddenly get their shit together in a day when they've made no such attempts for 10 years. Randall still acts like he doesn't give a crap and Dante's still preoccupied with being what he thinks society expects him to be without ever taking the time for figure what he wants.

That's how real life is tho. Most people don't change and get stuck in a dead end job. Most people don't advance up the career ladder, things happen, like for instance the quick stop burning down, making them have to start from the bottom again since they have no skills. Also other things can happen like being laid off, or being fired. My mother was a manager at Sam's club until one day they laid her off. She had worked her way to that position after 10 years. She was laid off and had to start all the way from the beginning since she didn't go to college, now she unloads trucks at Sam's club. Average people usually end up starting over several times in life. The movie seemed pretty realistic in that aspect to me.
@GadGades
@GadGades 7 жыл бұрын
carl rood we find out that they did try. they went to college and messed up by doing things that didn't matter. So it's not like they did nothing. Basically we see them try, and what we see is the end result, the compromise. Dante was trying to get married and move on too. The film shows a happy compromise to moving on, and being happy with it. But we learn that they had attempted to do so previously, and the marriage is also a part of trying to advance in life. the only bad part is taht as beautiful as rosario dawson is, she clashes badly with how plain and normal the two original main actors are. It adds an obvious artificiality.

Karate Kid part 2 imo is an example of a great sequel. It actually shed some light on the mysterious Mr. Miyagi and his background and origins of Okinawa. It showed us that Miyagi was not a god, and he did make some bad mistakes in his younger days, like telling the whole village he was marrying Yuki(which was supposed to be secret) when she was already scheduled to marry Sato, then running away from a fight of honour against Sato, which lead to Yuki refusing Sato, which fuelled his anger further. We also see Larusso actually starting to figure out karate on his own. Seeing the application of that Okinawan toy in the philosophy of karate.

This subject has always fascinated me (genuinely). I think it's a phenomenon among creators and artists in general. It's often * extremely * difficult, if not simply plain impossible to "recapture" the 'feel', the atmosphere, or the script quality of an original work (or the first work in a series). That doesn't mean that sequels are always worse, because there are exceptions (there's always exceptions). However, more often than not, the original movie, or the original book in a series is usually the best one. When it comes to video games, however, it's a bit different; albeit it still applies there too from time to time. But it's easier in video gaming to "do more" and to do it "better" in sequels than it would be for movies or in literature. But still, I really don't know why it's so tough to make sequels that are just as good if not even better than the original. But it truly is a real phenomenon that has been plaguing artists / creators / authors for as long as they're been creating.

I loved Home Alone 2 because its on more of a scarier scale also I kind of relate to kevin as a kid back in the day. I wanted independence from my family and got that from time to time as a kid also its pretty scary and yet whimsical for a kid who almost went homeless and he goes through some hardships with the citizens of new york which has to be pretty scary for a kid to go through. First movie is great but the second put the risks out alot more, I find the first one a bit too kid friendly and humble while the second one wasn't afraid to get dark. Similar to Disney movies of the old years even zootopia cleverly snuck in alot of dark shit for a kids movie. One movie sequel i really hate is Dumb and Dumber 2 the movie waited way too long to come out, I didn't like seeing these actors age, the actor's performance and the movie is so underwhelming compared to the movie, the effects are way worse than the first one and its prequel, it uses the first movie as an example but fails to understand what made the first movie so great in the first place, not once did i laugh in that movie, I even went back to the prequel which is so hated and i laughed at that one and enjoyed it a little more than Dumb and Dumber 2.

Buck Wade It pretty much insulted the book(s) by existing. If they made the movie and made the story actually like the book, it would be a much better movie. And I agree with you, the movie is pretty fricking boring. There's a reason why they decided to stop making the movies, since they pissed off the fans so much(and I guess they didn't have enough money or something to continue)

War Horse Why do people keep reacting like a movie adaptation that doesn't follow the source material is shocking at all? Disney's Hunchback movie is vastly different from the book (less complicated, less darker), but it still has the spirit of the book, just in the form of a kids movie. I don't recall (from YEARS ago) the Lightning Thief movie embodying ANY of the spirit from the book. Not: -The well-developed characters -The dry humour that made the characters really relatable -The really crazy and overwhelming fights where characters REALLY had to use everything they had to win.

No. The original was better. The hate toward the sequel (Yes, THE sequel. All other HA films never happened in my book) is unjust. The same cast doing largely the same things, but it's not just that. The stakes are higher, the cause more noble, the violence a bit edgier. Geez Louise! The clip that Doug shows with it being repetitive doesn't underline his point, it undercuts it. Harry and Marv anticipate that old trick, seem to outsmart Kevin, then end up getting blasted anyway! That's solid Spy Vs. Spy type material.

I think of all the issues with sequels listed, the lack of understanding of the source material is a massive factor, along with the filmmakers simply not caring. Case in point, when the Deadpool movie was being made, the studio kept slashing its budget and making production super-difficult. But the crew (especially Ryan Renolds) were all really dedicated to getting a good Deadpool movie made, and even managed to turn those setbacks into strengths: they cut out subplots and scenes that would have dragged the plot down and made the running gag about Deadpool forgetting to bring weapons to his big fights.

I think the best sequels adds something new, fresh and improved to the original, and understand what makes the original good. The original Alien movie was a Gothic horror movie set in space, loaded with suspense. Aliens is also suspenseful but takes the original concept to a new level with a lot of action, more aliens, everything bigger. It feels like a natural step forward in the Alien franchise
