Why Do We Fast? & What is Fasting?
The underlying principle behind fasting is found in Ayurveda. This ancient Indian medical science attributes the basic cause of many diseases to the accumulation of toxic materials in the digestive system. It is imperative to regularly cleanse the body of toxic materials to keep healthy. Thus, fasting affords the digestive organs rest, cleansing and putting in order all the body mechanisms. A complete fast is good for heath, with occasional sipping of warm lemon juice during the fasting period to prevent flatulence.
The human body, according to Ayurveda, is composed of 80% liquid and 20% solid, just like the earth. The gravitational force of the moon affects the fluid contents of the body, causing emotional imbalance in the body, making some people tense, irritable and violent. Fasting offsets this, as it lowers the acid content in the body, helping maintain physiologic and psychologic balance. Research suggests that there are major health benefits to caloric restriction, like reduced risks of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, immune disorders and many more.
Many people suffer from the misconception that fasting will lead to weakness. However, a day of fasting provides rest to the mechanism of the stomach, thereby enabling it to function better and prevent malabsorption of food. There is enhanced production of blood and other necessary chemicals, thereby leading to better overall health. An occasional day of fasting also helps in the better functioning of the liver, pancreas, intestines, kidneys, etc., thereby reducing the chances of ailments related to these organs.
