A Discussion around Beater watches and why they deserve to be in our collections and appreciated. They are abused the most and seldom receive the credit or recognition but also prove what modern watches can withstand when we look at their mechanics and watchmaking.

I think there's a bit of elitism around the idea that something like an SKX or G-Shock is just something to be banged around to protect your "good" watches rather than something to be appreciated on its own merits. My philosophy has always been that watches are meant to be worn, and if I'm not wearing it then maybe I shouldn't have it. Part of why I haven't bought a Rolex or Grand Seiko, despite how amazing I think they are, is because I'd be afraid to wear something that expensive. One of the essays in A Man and His Watch says he'd rather have a $40 piece that he owns, than a $4,000 piece that owns him. I definitely feel that as well. My SKX and G-Shock have been all over the world with me, and have the scrapes to show it. To me that's a way more meaningful and important part of my collection than something expensive and impressive that stays in the box.

It is a bit biased, I agree. The more I've learnt about what others buy the "beater" watches for, the more they sound like pieces that are purely there to be used harder than others. But then we are some of the exceptions. Great point on "owning the watch" that was a nice bit of detail in Hranek's book (that you've reminded me about) - It's all well and good "affording" a watch, but CAN you actually afford it? Like us, the watches should embrace the scratches. We're not going to look flawless in our later years anyway, why should they? ;) Great comment Ric, thank you!

I personally believe that life is too short to not wear your grail watch, but when there are situations and places where it’s risky to wear it, the beater watch becomes the best tool. No grail watch should live its life as a safe queen, and no beater should be worn unappreciated.

My beater watch is a oris aquis titainium. I'd rather get scratches on that instead of my £250 bulova marine star in rose gold because a scratch on the oris doesn't look out of place but it would on a polished rose gold case.

I became addicted to watches 2 years ago, but I always had a thing for them. My collection is nothing but beater watches. I decided to dedicate my collection to Timex only which range from $35 to $400. I currently have 50 plus Timex watches, so technically, at that price point, they can all be considered beaters.

I had to say this now...my late dad had his 1975 Lord Matic as his only watch, except for very formal things, like weddings and stuff. But, growing up, I also saw it in the mud, rain, saltwater, you name it..as he was an outdoor guy. When he passed, I now have it. I serviced it once and baby it as as special piece. But after this vid, I think I'll give it a better run, once more. Thanks for this.

I do have g shock as my beater. But in recent years I don't care about wearing my nicer watches in any circumstance. Not long ago, I saw a piece about James Cameron and his Submariner. The story was he eventually gave it away to someone, but he had worn it daily for years during all his movie making adventures and it was all beat to heck. I liked the idea and now no longer relegate my nice watches to my box to get worn only every few weeks.

i have a “proper beater”- a g shock that basically never gets worn- as I don’t do manual work (if I can help it), apart from in bed because it’s lightweight and has a light to tell the time in the dark. But I think nowadays a beater watch often means our rugged daily wearer and comes from the fact we worry so much about our other watches and forget the purpose of a watch is to be worn and enjoyed, scratched and dinged. The freedom of wearing a watch and not letting contact with a door handle spoil your evening is often overlooked 😂 I don’t know if we need a beater in the way many of us use it (basically a daily hard wearer), we could probably just stop being so fussy with our other watches. A Rolex sub/Explorer/OP is a luxury watch but can easily be a daily wearer that takes any beating. However if you have a delicate daily wearer- a patek annual calendar for example, I would no doubt want a cheaper robust watch for the days at the beach or gardening!

Can also probably be called a field watch. My go-to beater is a green Citizen ProMaster Tough on a nato. Ecodrive, sapphire crystal, 200m WR, great lume, monocoque construction, all of this for less than $300. The best beater out there, if you don't like a plastic G-Shock and like the look of a classic analog three- hander.

I have a few "beaters", one of which is pictured at 1:20 and it could easily be the only watch I'd ever want, I'm fortunate to be able to have a collection but honestly the Casioak is everything I need. I have a soft spot for my Casio F-91W that I've polarised to be an inverted display (white on black background), proudly on a nato strap that cost twice as much as the watch at $18..... I'd daily most of my sport watches but if I'm cutting the grass or working on the car I wear a "beater", and then I still treat them to a good clean if they get dirty, a little OCD takes over. Another great video.

I wear a square G-Shock on a bracelet while cycling. Like you say, it can deal with knocks, it's light and it's comfortable and solar powered so I don't even have to worry about batteries. And indeed it has gained character because of the journeys it's been on with me. It's loved too, it's in my watchbox just like my more expensive pieces. But even if I owned a submariner I could never take it cycling. It's too heavy and uncomfortable for that.

I own two beaters. A Timex Weekender and my Seiko Sea Urchin. Both are watches I wear when I think I'll be near water (or in a rain storm), if I think I might get drunk and accidentally hit my watch against a doorframe or countertop or if I am going out in a public spot where the only people who care what watch I'm wearing are potential thieves. They are watches I enjoy wearing a great deal, but are either easily replaceable or where there is little to no emotional connection with the watch. I'm getting a G-Shock for Christmas and I expect it to join the beater contingent in my collection.

Loved the video & subject! I remember spending weeks researching my beater watch which was intended to be & is the watch I’d reach for when mountain & road biking. It had to be quartz, waterproof, durable...but yet cool and a brand I respect. So, it had to be a Seiko diver! It was put onto a nato strap immediately. I’ve always loved Seiko since saving up all summer when I was 13yrs old to buy a “real” diver - a Seiko. I now have and have had numerous Rolex’s & other nice watches, but there is something cool about my “beater.” Thanks & keep up the great work!

I wore a Breitling "Shark" quartz for several years here in SW Florida, never took it off. Also my first Omega Speedie i bought in the early 70's, I also never took it off , including rock climbing with it. They both have very scratched bracelets and clasps . I saw these as tool watches and treated them as such. I also always have at least 1 G-Shock for tasks like painting or light construction. For a short while I had a Seiko "Arnie" when they first came onto the market. Sold that one after a year , because I became bored with it. Wish I hadn't. So I prefer no more than one or two watches at a time and wear them in almost all situations. I think a watch tells a story about its life and owner through its type and patina.

I will take off my G-shock if I think there's a chance of it getting destroyed, that said, it's probably likely to survive most situations better than us mere mortals. Beaters are more fun than haute pieces, and they still need to be beautiful, interesting and wearable. Not many modern divers meet that brief. They tend to be too big, gaudy and ugly.

Next week will be my final lament on the watch, Luis! It's basically a 9 minute review that covers all sorts (without the Explorer being mentioned much) don't ask how it was done... must've consumed some strong stimulants while writing it that day. It's a cool clip though but it will get some hate too ;)

Next T-Shirt print idea? "Say NO to Safe Queens!" That's a great idea actually... but fully agree, brother. All my watches have some scars (as they should) - whats the point to life without a few beauty spots. AND the philosophical ideas have been great fun, Eric... been working on a few more behind the scenes that should be airing over the next few weeks. Keep taking care of yourself, sir!

Just came across this interesting, older video (awesome channel by the way!) and couldn’t resist commenting on such a relatable theme. I own a mechanical automatic 7S26 Lorus and it is my perfect sports beater: fixed aluminium Pepsi bezel, intense blue sunburst dial, day-date, strong rubber strap, 10 atms, 42mm, the works… But recently I felt the need to buy other watches to replace this beater’s function because I didn’t want to ruin it. And I wouldn’t have even thought about this, had it not been for this video; a bargain watch, originally bought for bike riding or tennis or swimming, that I could not beat upon as intended. It now seems I strangely value this watch at much more, so much so that I just bought a Casio Duro for swimming and a GA2100 for bike riding and other activities. The paradox? This was probably my least worn watch in the collection, which means I’ll wear it even less now due to those new arrivals… both of which (ironically), cost more than my original beater. How about that for silliness??

“Wearing an automatic watch everyday wears out the movement.” No matter if you wear it everyday or never wear it, it’s still going to need service around the same time. Top it with wearing out your crown stem by always winding it back up.

Well I'm not rich. So when I invest good money into a watch I expect it to look nice and last a long time. So I don't want to damage it when I'm going camping so I take my G-shock. It's only $125 (or so) and it takes all kinds of abuse. In fact it gets even cooler if it gets damaged because then it has a story. But if it doesn't make it, it's only a hundred bucks and I can just buy a new one.

I've never been a fan of the term or theory of a "beater" watch. I have watches that I wear for heavy duty use that are built for that purpose (Casio 5600E), etc. I do however have "mugging" watches. I'll be damned if I'm giving a mugger my best watch. No, they'll be getting a Casio Royale this holiday season.

I drank the kool aid about beater watches in the past. What in the hell are people doing to mess up your watches? I am an active guy and I do nothing that would damage a watch. I mess with tools, hike, shoot, etc. Every time I scratch a watch, it’s doing stupid things like taking a pan out of the cabinet. I think it’s an excuse to buy a new watch. I can definitely get on board with that but a beater isn’t necessary unless you are an auto mechanic.

A “beater watch” is subjective term. To a billionaire, a Rolex could be classified as a beater watch and to an average Joe, a $500.00 watch is in the class of a Rolex. I don’t like the term “beater watch”. All watches are meant to be worn daily and enjoyed. If you buy a Rolex and only wear it once or twice a year, what’s the point of having it if you are afraid of enjoying it? In the book “A man and his watch” tells the adventures of men and their watches. A watch that’s well worn tells a story of accomplishments, defeats, victories and struggles in his life. When I retire, my goal is to own one of three watches. An Omega Railmaster, Seamaster 300 or, Rolex Explorer. When I send it in for servicing I’ll have instructions not to polish the case. I want the bumps, scratches an imperfections to show as a reminder of the adventures I had with the watch on my wrist.

@@jonathanl2748 when you wear a watch the bumps, scratches and normal wear & tear from use builds character to the watch. When you look at your watch and you see a scratch or whatever reminds you of a particular adventure or event in your life. If you buy a watch and all it does is sit in a safe. What’s the point of having it?

The amount of abuse your watch is capable of surviving is responsible for at least 90% of the romance of wearing it. Most watch guys don’t care much about the white gold logo of your Rolex, it’s much more important that it can survive Everest, Sealab, and the jungles of Vietnam. Even if, in reality, it does nothing more strenuous than a day at the beach.
