As far back as I remember I always had a "beater" watch in my collection. Many watches may come and gone but it is a task that if I only had a very few pieces, I will always designate at least one in the collection for that role. Even my grandfather had a beater pocket watch for hunting and pottering about in the garden. His was a more robust version of his smarter, solid gold far more expensive main timepiece. So this is nothing new and today I take a look at two highly regarded watches from Casio that offer so much for such a small price tag. The first is the diver styled and quartz powered "Duro" MDV-106 with its handsome classic analog look. The second is the digital G-Shock DW5600E, a modern upgraded descendent of the very first G-Shock from 1983, a true icon of horology and certified by NASA for space missions.

My neighbor found a bandless Casio duro marlin at an abandoned home demolition. He brought it to me and we discussed the watch in all it's details. When I was done explaining to him how fundamentally charming it is in its composure and value and slenderness and epitome he thought he had a treasure. Which he did. The Duro Marlin is an amazing watch. It doesn't have anything extra yet it isn't missing anything at all. It is the classic dive watch. Quartz reliability. Sunburst dial. Amazingly graceful on the wrist. Great caseback. Great Marlin symbolism. Honestly if I had a choice to wear the $50 Duro Marlin or a $5,000 Rolex. I would gladly wear the Marlin. Rolex is material. Marlin is spiritual.

Same here, I am an automotive painter and I too wear the 5600. I've tried other cheaper Casios but the solvents would eat away at the acrylic crystals. The 5600 having a mineral crystal makes it resistant to solvents. I clean the over spray off it with lacquer thinner all the time and it still looks great (other than the wear and tear it has, but it just adds character).

yeah, people seem to underestimate just how much of a beating even an f91w can take. It's the ak47 of watches, it's tough as nails with plenty of functionality. but even if it breaks you can replace it for way less than the cheapest g shock while having a way longer battery life. The only thing that lets it down is the subpar light.

It is an affordable, stylish iconic watch, I own two and love them but I wouldn't call it tough as nails really as it is made of pretty soft plastic and is only 3 bar water reaistant, as a result mine is really scratched and has a 1 mm hole in the case from spending the summer wrenching on my Landy. Also got a misty dial from surface swimming... So I'm considering one of the G-shock "square" models wich resamble F91 but really are tough as nails :)

I just bought a blue Duro and it feels like it has almost ruined watch collecting for me. It is such a great looking watch compared with others that are multiple times more expensive in the quartz movement category, that I think finding a better value for the dollar is going to be a hard thing to do. Yes I love my Swiss automatic watch no doubt, but the Duro was 1/20th the cost and is still great to wear and look at.

I’m no fanboy of watches or brands, but for the money, the Citizen Promaster eco-drive should be on anyones list of divers watches. Depending when you catch it on sale, it can be less than $200. The lume is excellent, the bezel has nice functionality and it’s very accurate. I use it to set my mechanical watches as well. 200m of WR and solar powered is the icing on the cake.

TGV, just wanted to say 'thankyou!' Based on this video, first seen by me a few months ago, I bought the Duro. To date, ive enjoyed it immensely: its taken abuse (however slight) that very few of my watches could endure & still look as good as it does. But, best of all, it caught the eye of a Rolex-wearing, slightly smug guest staying at the hotel where I work--who very quickly caught himself when he realized I was wearing a 'lowly Casio.' Lol Love your videos! Thanks for helping to keep the wonderful hobby of Horology alive!!

One thing I should mention about the 5600: It's an amazing dive watch. I'm not much of a diver, but I have gone before. This watch accompanied on my last two dives, held up wonderfully snorkeling, and withstood being dropped, thrown against a wall, etc. It's a hell of a watch.

The Casio Duro is one of my favorite inexpensive beaters.. fantastic choice. I own one in fact, which I believe I bought on sale/clearance for $25... It punches far above it's price.. and its kept up rather well on my sailing/fishing/diving excursions. As far as the G-shock, I myself don't own one (although I might have a very old one in a box somewhere left over from childhood) but I have always heard such fantastic things about them, and will always remember a friend of mine who was told to purchase one by his peers while serving in an Army LRS unit. Also I believe These Duro's use Mitoya Quartz Movements. Many of the Analog Casios use Miyota and Epson (Seiko) movements.

I really enjoy my DURO , have plenty of straps. I got into watches about two years ago my job required for me to be everywhere at once and needed to use my time wisely. I hated pulling out my phone 24/7 so I started with a G- shock. Now I have a small collection of casios.( marine gear, g shocks) Casio satisfies my watch needs for now, I'm a tech and work in construction sites almost everyday and these watches hold up pretty good for work or going out.

I haven't worn a watch for maybe 15 years, but recently I found myself needing a watch for work. I looked at smart watches etc. but in the end I bought g-schock 5600, and I really enjoy it. In the process of finding a watch for work, I have developed an interest in watches I never had before, and watching your channel is very inspiring. I'm now looking into getting my next watch, getting this g-shock might have lead me to a new expensive hobby! But I love it.

I own the casio and I love it. I had it for 3 or 4 years now and it works great. No scratches on the glass so far. Like everyone else who owns this watch, or at least most people, I to have also used different watch straps on it. The strap that comes with it is good, but I wanted a more tradition look to it so a metal band with a curved end. Highly recommend it.

These watches have been screaming "TGV vid" for ages! Very impressed with the the Duro. Didn't think the value of the Seiko SKX could be topped, but this watch ticks all the boxes for an all-weather watch with classic looks. Final note, I believe the quartz module is a Casio rebadged Miyota 2115.

I have had the G-Shock since 2014 and I can't say enough good things about my watch. It is fabulous, I have been to beaches and hikes with it on my wrist, have also dropped it a couple of storeys down and this watch still doesn't even has a scratch. Also, it was worn by Keanu Reeves in the movie "Speed". This watch makes me feel like I am an outdoor's man.. Its funny but it does do that.. I am planning to put another strap on it now. Something made of cloth like other military watches. P.S - I too have small wrists.

Quartz is also great for chronographs since that complication can be costly to service in a mechanical piece. Seiko has some great mechaquartz options with a smooth sweeping chrono seconds hand. They would make a good beater as they can be had for around a hundred dollars and perform well if you want a sporty chronograph and can' afford or don't want to drop the cash on a speedy. I've got my eye on the SSB031. My go-to everyday watch is a Seiko 5 SNZG15, which has taken more than a few knocks and has some "character" on the hardlex, but it still keeps excellent time and runs like a champ. The 5 is definitely what I'd recommend if someone wanted an automatic beater.

I have the Duro and love it. Two minor details I would love to see added in future iterations: 1.) a magnifier bubble over the date; 2.) the marlin logo laser-etched onto the face of the crown. Both are small nitpicks tho and the watch is wonderful as it is.
@marioventura1129
@marioventura1129 2 жыл бұрын
So, after a year Casio only made Duro worse. You didn't put the lens in the date window and you didn't pay the royalties to use the Marlin fish! Now Duro comes without the famous fish! That is. It got worse, generating many protests from Casio's most loyal consumers! Lack of consideration all in the name of money!

I think if they made the Duro in 42mm and a solar movement and charge around 100USD, they would have a beast on their hands. I have recently acquired a Green bezel/ black dial version and I love it to bits. Very solid watch...it also has the Marlin logo.

My career is just getting started this year and my watch Three grail watches as of now , are the Rolex submariner two tone, Omega seamaster 300 Spectre edition on the nato strap and the Omega Planet Ocean Deep Black. I love those timepieces. But for now I want to start my collection with the Casio Duro, Seiko 5, and the Seiko SKX. All watches that are affordable to me right now. Casio and the seiko 5 will probably be first. With a Bond grey and black nato strap from Wrist candy watch club. Again. Everything I know is thanks to your channel. So I appreciate you putting out the content for us newbies. Cheers from Vegas.

Abhi K. Abhi K. My father has a subi, great watch and a true classic. Its about 15 years old and its still ticking (slow, but it just needs a good regulation)! The Bond Omega looks awesome as well. My dream grail watches are Breitling Navi 01 and IWC Mk. XVIII. Maybe a Zenith El Primero later :) or Rolex GMT master II pepsi ( ceramic, not gold, great watch but its not worth 28k!) Im hoping to get a Seiko SARB and maybe the Casio Duro. Goodluck!

Breitlings are beautiful as well. A little to complicated for me but wonderful looking timepieces. Those are some good choices. I just bought the duro yesterday since it's only 43 dollars. And got some nato straps for it as well. It's going to be my everyday beater watch. It'll have some history to it before I'm done. I just bought a business so I can't wear high end watches there as it doesn't fit the type of business I bought. So the Casio will be everyday. High end watches will be when I go out. In general I'm excited to receive it. But I need to find that Spectre watch. It was a minutes edition so it rarely pops up. I want it as a whole set with the box and papersto. So that's even more hard to find.

There is one con about the Casio G Shock DW-5600E. Its been my beater watch for five years. I swim with it, shower with it, sleep with it etc. I have noticed that have a number of years of usage, oils and grim keep change the matte finish to a shiny black finish. Though i think this might have something to do with not cleaning the watch. After 5 + years of usage. Another pro is that i still haven't change the battery yet, contrary to the 2 years of battery life you mentioned in your video.

The Casio Duro was my first real watch, but I gave it away because it far too large for me. This would actually be my first recommendation for anyone who wants to get a diver, but isn't looking for an automatic. The size and the lume are my only hang ups, otherwise I would have kept it and never bought an SKX. The bezel action is fantastic, better than my SKX or my Orient Mako.
