To his credit, Hudson was right about everything. They didn't last 17 hours, they did come in there and kill them. And Newt should've been put in charge.

Agree. This is an area in which movies excel over books. The trope of the character that everyone knows and sees as one way who acts differently under pressure. (Without going back to check easy sources, I will cite...) Like Adam Baldwin's character in Full Metal Jacket. He is a racist asshole in the scenes in combat down-time. In combat, he is the one person that is most active in wanting to save his black comrade from enemy fire. It strikes me as a point about who we think we are, or pretend to be, versus who we really are. In Aliens Hudson is a bit hapless, a bit carefree in the down-time. When the s**t gets real, so does he. ETA: Fixed my stupid error on Adam Baldwin's correct identification.

Bill Paxton added so much to this film. He added comic relief from tension, without seeming jokey. Aliens could not have had so many high tension scenes without his sarcastic moments.

Such great character arcs. The other characters represent who the audience wishes they were (Ripley is calm, collected, solution-oriented. Vasquez is a brave warrior. Hicks is a leader. Newt is a clever hider who can quickly flee danger) But Hudson represents how most of us REALLY are. Scared shitless. But even while being who we truly are, he does it in a funny way. So you can say to yourself "Yeah, I'd be like Hudson, scared and defeated, but at least I'd be funny about it!!"
@jimbobeire
@jimbobeire 5 жыл бұрын
@@koolaidman6251 Yeah, in _Alien_ it was Lambert who represents the fear of the audience, but she froze up in panic. Hudson moaned in the downtime between doing tasks, but it was cathartic, and he pulled his weight and went out fighting, took plenty of Xenos with him too, and more importantly didn't get anyone else killed through his actions or inactions. He didn't hesitate to put himself between Newt and the facehugger that was trying to get her.

Ripley's character is probably one of the best examples of "strong female" in cinema. What makes her so great is that she's not superhuman. She's just a normal, average person. She doesn't know how to fight, she's not physically strong, the situation terrifies her just as much as everyone else and the only thing she has to defend herself is her moral compass and implacable will to survive.

My idea was that once the barricades were up, sentry guns placed, they move quickly and quietly back outside, while Bishop patches in manually, they could take a big CAT crawler out away from the colony. The xenos don't know its going to explode, so they're going to be busy dealing with the barricades and sentries first, then combing through all the scent trails in the colony complex. Plenty of time to get way far out into wasteland, set a picket, and wait for Bishop to bring the dropship down.

I hate films where everyone acts & says the right things & are unrealistic. Kubrick always said "Don't tell the story - show it". And Hudson shows that he is very scared of an enemy that is superior in every way except for human creativity. Kids are very creative, & so the girl survived by adapting. Contrary to belief, humans are very adaptive. It's only the system we are all confined to that is intransigent.

All right I had a nightmare: I was with a random hotie girl and her little brother(8 years or so), we were in my hometown but for some reason it was overrun by the xenomorphs. I haven't seen them but I knew, like the way you know in a dream. Now for some reason there was a basement/underground passage very reminiscent to the colony in Aliens 1986 under a store that would lead us to safety. Underneath this passage was a sewer like the one Newt got kidnapped by the alien. We were walking and the kid kept talking about some random shit. Then we heard the xenomorphs in the distance in the sewer approaching our location. I grabbed the kid and tried to cover his mother telling him to shut up but he kept making noises and would not listen. I was scared shitless more so than Hudson - primal fear bordering with outright terror... I threw the kid into the sewer and squeezed into a corner praying that xenomorphs take the kid and won't notice me. His sister freaked out and went to save him. Then I woke up still scared but also stricken at what unspeakable thing I have done... I mean it was my subconsciousness and my life or death decision in a stressful situation after all...

Every infantryman below sergeant loves to complain, because their job sucks and there's no way to quit. NCOs are primarily selected based on their ability to complain *about* their squad instead of complaining *to* them (the former being good for discipline, and the latter being bad for it... apparently).

I agree because Ripley and the little girl who were the only two up to that point had experiences with the Aliens. Imagine if this was real and you see a Alien crawling up your wall in your house for the first time. It would mess with your psyche. Now add to that you are out of space and the only known flight carrier has crashed and blew up. Out of all the characters I could relate to Hudson the most because I would have been acting the same way.😂

Carrie Henn did a great job, even little bits like how she's between elbows trying to watch as they plan out where to barricade the Ops centre. Now this is the right kind of feminism. Real feminism, when it meant something and wasn't perpetuated by lies and evidence-less assumptions used to demonstrate unfair amount of political sway. She handles him quite nicely, he's freaking out, she calms him down. He's sassing her, she puts him in line, probably making him feel emasculated, but that is natural, and then she re-iterates that he is needed and important but they don't have time for him to fall apart. That isn't just a good female-to-male relationship that is a good leader right there, that is how you handle and deal with people, male to female, female to male, same sex to same sex. Glorious character.

Sigourney was absolutely brilliant as Ripley. It is so difficult for female actors to portray being strong AND vulnerable at the same time. Sigourney had this down to a T though. A lot of strong female characters in films, particular the modern era, just seem to come across as annoying, not Ripley though. Sigourney was thoroughly deserving of her Oscar nom for this film. She was astounding in Aliens, and the climax of this film is just incredible.

The best part about Hudson is that from certain clips you might guess he was a coward, but the character more than held his own in multiple situations.
@jediprettyboy
@jediprettyboy 6 ай бұрын
He’s afraid, but not a coward. He just needs to vent which prevents him from being a good leader, but he’s still a good soldier. He’s just the type of guy who needs proper leadership to guide him. Ultimately, he’ll do the right thing.
