Today we've got 3 questions from a viewer pertaining to self-defense and MMA with Jiu-Jitsu, asking:
#1 Isn't there a difference in knowing how to execute strikes vs. defending and dealing with someone striking you?
#2 Isn't defending strikes also fundamental Jiu-Jitsu (managing distance/damage)?
#3 Do you think you need to learn and train how to strike to be successful in an MMA fight?"
In this video I'll try to answer all 3 of these questions to the best of my ability.
As a Wrestler going into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and someone who fought in MMA, I think there are possibly some useful ideas to chew on as it relates to all 3 questions.
On top of going through my own experiences in relation to these questions, I'll discuss my experience watching others who wanted to learn self-defense or MMA but fell short in their beliefs with Jiu-Jitsu (which consequently hurt them).
I'll dive into the idea that just being able to "Defend" techniques, both in grappling and striking, is not enough, but instead we need to develop the ability to create offense too - in order to win.
To finish this up, if you want to learn how to execute and defend strikes, go to a striking class specifically. It's not enough to just utilize fundamental Jiu-jitsu to defend strikes, and you definitely need to be doing some form of striking consistently to be successful in MMA.
Hopefully you guys found this video helpful.
