There are certain things that every man should own. It varies for everyone, but just like a good watch, reliable shoes, and certain items of clothing to get the job done, a high quality everyday bag is definitely in this list of essentials.
Today we return to the roots of the Urban Gentry channel and revisit a brand that I’ve loved and supported since I first started posting videos on KZfaq. In this video I review the Carl Friedrik Palissy Double Bag and discuss why it’s better than most designer brands that cost twice as much. Handmade in Italy, combining Scandinavian and classic London styles, this is my favorite bag from Carl Friedrik thus far, and in my opinion, it is better than all the alternatives out there. I mean I'm not pretty enough for a handbag anyway but I really do prefer the hands-free approach of a good backpack. Makes running to catch the last tram or dodging rogue drivers easier. Also, bike compatible.

I loved sartorial content from early days of the channel! I just re-watched all War Room videos last weekend. I loved bracelet video in early days. I often go to channel and sort videos from oldest on the top and binge watch. Glad to see that channel is returning to it's original roots. That intro with the bridge always brings nice memories. Aside from the items mentioned, I think everyone should have a high-quality notebook and a good pen. The pen doesn't have to be fancy, it just has to be one you're incredibly comfortable writing with.

Thank you! I am always looking for a quality messenger and/or weekend bag. I recently discovered the Carl Friedrik brand on a search, but until now have not quite made my decision to purchase. Your review has certainly given me incentive. And I just had another look at their website, and was pleased to see they display prices in my local currency of CAD. And, yes, although they are not inexpensive, they seem to be an incredible value. Some of the more well known brands are many times more expensive and nowhere near the quality. A friend of mine has a LV messenger bag, and it is absolute garbage. Matter of fact, I don't even think they use real leather, and a local leather shop I deal with even verified that. Price of that bag is well over 3 grand! Thanks again! Cheers, Carl

As someone more than a little obsessive about my travel bags, I would have liked a little more detail on how well it held all the various electronics, wires, chargers, and other items that go with the gear. Nice detail on the workmanship, but I would have liked some more on how well it functioned. Some more detailed looks at interior space, how well it loaded up a laptop, power supply, camera, headphones, etc. I like how it looks but I can't tell if it would hold what I need. Oh, and how can you do a close up on a zipper without commenting on the smoothness of the pull? That's like reviewing a dive watch without commenting on the click of the bezel.

The original Urban Gentry, I'm sorry I missed that :-) It’s an interesting topic. I used to have a nice Arthur and Aston bag in 2010 but to be honest I was kind off the only one that used such a bag, and after some time gave in and bought a new backpack. Even today I'm still wearing a be it modern stylish backpack for work. But I would love to go back to my stylish bag... Great video, yet again!

It would be amazing to see you do a piece on them from their UK workshops and we would all wish for “Smell O’ Vision” because it must smell amazing in there with all that beautiful leather.

I got a Ruitertassen tan briefcase last month, it's full grain and doesn't feel at all like what I expected, as some would say fresh veg tan leather is like "cardboard" but I hear it gets better with time. For anyone else who thinks the standard leather briefcase pricing of 400-500$ among almost every brand I've seen that's discussed on the internet, it's a good alternative for half the price.

Definitely essential. Mine are: ancient (>25 years) Tumi leather overnight bag/briefcase, great for one- or two-day trips. From the good old days when Tumi quality was still high, and it still scrubs up almost as new. And a newer but now also well-travelled handsome Knomo Brixton (IIRC) double compartment black leather briefcase. Oodles of space for laptop, papers and in-flight stuff plus spare shirt, socks etc if I've checked my other luggage. For cycling/walking business days (ie not often) a lightweight Hideo Wakamatsu hybrid briefcase with concealed backpack straps.

I love the idea. I live in the suburbs so I replace the bag with a personalized leather binder, custom leather driving gloves and the trunk of my car. I'm not sure if its more or less complicated. I wish I had a use for such a nice bag. maybe a lifestyle change is in order. Thanks TGV.

Having a pretty serious health condition for most of my life I have to say I do find my smaller shoulder bags invaluable, for carrying supplies etc. I have 3 at the moment, which I change depending on the occasion/weather, although my favourite is a very nice black leather one my gf bought me whilst on holiday in Menorca. Great video as always 👍

My taste runs very similar - quality leather, brief case dimensions. I see so many sling bags pitched by KZfaqrs, they remind me of fanny packs, just as small messenger bags - well they're purses. Nicely done as always.

Good call. Buying quality, in a classic design, is never a bad idea - it ends up being an investment. This could be a series: a guide to sport coats, a guide to dress shoes, pairing clothing items and bringing together a wardrobe, etc. The watch videos are always great, but there's more to life, and you present it well. Perhaps when we're able to step out, and be more carefree again, we can do so in style... a bit more gentlemanly. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada.

Essentials in my book are a good watch, I’ve just acquired an Oris TT1 Titan 300m Divers Chronograph which will hopefully arrive tomorrow, a nice suit, a nice wool coat, a nice pair of boots, shoes, a leather jacket, a good knife and some nice jewelry.

Bought my first high end briefcase/bag December 2019 but didn't get it until December 2020. I got a Ferragamo at half price, a friend in Italy has a friend that works at the Florence shop and got the employee discount. I didn't get until last month because I never made it back to Italy due to covid. I was traveling for work one a quarter or so, so I was going to pick it up in February 2020 on my trip, but that was canceled as Covid was blowing up in Italy at that time. Sucks it took a year to finally get it, but I love it.

Hi, Tristano. For parts, I think that the Yema Superman, although you own the other too, is a superb watch, love it. I like very much other stuff in the channel, as you consider it to be shared. I prefer listening people that talk about what they like before that just this or that stuff. So I have enjoyed this video a lot. About bapacks, the most elegant I own I suppose is the Minaal Daily pack. Yes... I am also a bagpack guy.

Thanks for the review, TGV. I prefer a slimmer smaller leather bag. I rarely take my laptop on business trips unless I will be away for more than three days. I just like to travel light. To answer your question regarding essentials, I suggest discussing men's attire, such as shoes, and men's accessories, such as fountain pens. Continued success with the channel.

I recently started getting into fountain pens and they are a beautiful way to correspond. Would highly recommend them. Even an entry level Pilot Metropolitan is a great way to jot down information or for correspondence. Would love to hear TGV's take on them as well as shoes and such :-)

TGV, a video of things that go into the bag(s) that help you organize the items you put into them would be interesting. i.e. cord organizers, watch travel case(s) etc.... Always interesting to me.

I would to know your reviews about Xeric watches. I don't know if you have heard of them but I've seen a lot of them in ads. I was wondering if they are good quality watches and if should buy one. Another great video. I always enjoy. Do you have recommendation for a slim leather zipper portfolio. The type that usually have the zip across two sides and is just big enough to contain files, pen, and perhaps a slim laptop/pad if needed. I saw one once at Johnson Murphy's and no long see it. It must be manufactured by someone. Thanks for any ideas you might have.

Classy as always TGV. Really like these Gentry lifestyle videos. Forgive me if you have already done this but I am moving backwards through your videos. How about a Gentry mens fragrance episode. Us gents always have to smell good too 👌🏼
