Fun and interesting discussion. From a literary perspective working within constraints reminds me of literature of yore, when form defined the content; sonnets would be expected to conform to certain themes; and plays would either be tragedies, comedies, or histories. Which only began to change in the modern period with Shakespeare and Cervantes.

i think the big thing is getting a good video artist/editor to make a good music video. doing memes is an option as well, but i still think having something entertaining and thought out that is visual and that matches the tone of the music can really elevate the art to a new level

It's a mix of ego and envy, the cutthroat music industry breeds the crab mentality because there's this perception that there isn't enough room for everyone to have success. I also have to mention that in pop culture there's sort of a pre-carved path to a music career where you're supposed to pay your dues by starting in a garage, gig for free in shitty dives, and tour for lousy pay in heinous conditions. Then you're a "real" musician who has earned the privilege of being happy, likable, and successful. So people struggle for years walking this pre-approved path to rockstardom and don't get to the top of the mountain, and while they were on that lost road spinning their wheels the industry changed and new blood swooped in and found a "shortcut" to success. to blue collar musicians doing it the old way, they feel cheated and ripped off, but they're so used to the old way that it's easier for them to attack another person's credibility and legitimacy than it is to adapt to the modern climate. That's not to say that their feeling isn't understandable, but attacking other people isn't a recipe for success. It's just the jaded ramblings of people who feel left behind or think it's unfair that other people didn't have to endure the same misery that they did

I don’t even know if this is speaking to that point or not, but what’s interesting is that guitar is bigger than it’s ever been… But it’s more of a general appreciation and unlike previous decades it isn’t attached to particular songs and artists… There really aren’t any big songs or artists anymore. People just love the art of guitar and KZfaqrs are a big part of that. I also don’t blame people that want nothing to do with social media and wish it was just about the music… That isnt the world we live in though.

I believe 99% of people, at least in our American culture, they want attention for their talents and hard work; whether it be a record deal, or the foreman at the plant promoting you, but this is true especially in music. People (especially musicians in this context), who say they want no mass attention, or they don't want to be famous and sell out, they want to just play to a few people and maintain their day job, etc... Frankly, I don't believe it lol out of ten, I believe .5/10 truly mean it. I saw a documentary about black metal a couple years ago where three different solo artists had a mini doc done on them, and the topic was isolation, solitude, outsiders living on the fringe, and they all kept saying (paraphrasing) "I hate people. I don't want your praise or criticism, I don't want money, or even attention personally, or for my music. I just want to be left alone." ... But yet they allowed/invited this journalist and allowed their actual faces to be recorded, and they show their recording methods and how hard they work to put their music out there for people to consume and pay attention to, which means they are purposely wanting and bringing attention to themselves bc they really do need or want it. If what they said was true to the way they express their wanted isolation, then they would not go so hard on trying to get this music out to the masses, and even project it further by accepting a journalism documentary on their private lives (which is extremely invasive). It makes me think of the South Park episode, the talent show, and the goth kids go up to perform (people who watch know how they are), and they're singing lyrics that talk shit about the talent show and how they don't want to do it, and when they finish they say something extra like "yeah, stupid talent show. I hope we win." 😂 And that is the truth with these people who claim these types of claims in music!! Every musician wants to be heard and receive accolades and validation at a minimum, and most want fame and fortune. The only people I think truly want to be left alone are people who go to live off the grid and lived in a cabin for decades (and they don't make KZfaq videos about how they don't want any contact or attention from people), or maybe a rancher or farmer who rather live with the silence and his non-speaking animals. I believe that musicians, especially musicians who play any type of rock (as a massive umbrella term), at a _minimum_ listen to their favorite music and imagine it's them playing the guitar and on the mic, and they have their own audience picked out to gush and be amazed and clap, etc... Even if they never try to put their music out bc they don't know how, or they're scared... They still play and maybe record on their phone or something and listen to it alone, and they day dream about what it would be like to put it out to the world and be heard by millions.

To me, Finn's right. It boils down to nothing more than jealousy. Just an old-guard mentality that the only way a guitarist should be trying to make a name for themselves is with a band, onstage. That's tons of fun, absolutely and totally cool if you have the means to get that going, but not everybody does. Nor do every two people have the same goal. But yeah, for real check out the Guitar World, Ultimate Guitar etc comment sections whenever a KZfaqr has an article about them. So many don't consider them real musicians. Like if you're a guitarist and made a name for yourself in KZfaq, you've somehow snuck in the backdoor and don't actually deserve to be there. Just dumb lol.
@BLeeFAFO
@BLeeFAFO Жыл бұрын
I don't understand people talking shit so much, But I don't see it as complete jealousy either. I do think that if more YT guitarists were delving into more than just technique & dazzle lick devices, And maybe just a bit more on songwriting and creative intent they may or may not have a bit more to leverage against the naysayers. It just unfortunately seems like a lot , Not all, but some YT guitar cats are just a modern version of the late 80's shred mania. It becomes or became more about flash and speed rather than musical expression. A ton of the YT guitarists can play, no doubt. But can they actually create a tune out of what they're doing, And is there really any musical basis in it? I see both sides. And no, As a former bands dude I don't think you absolutely MUST be a gigging musician is the be all end all, But learning to play songs and project a cohesive musical idea and see how or if an audience responds is valuable. Balance if it can be achieved, Is better IMO.

KZfaq has kind of become the new Shrapnel Records. Those super talented Shrapnel guys from the 80s and 90s weren't touring arenas, or even big rooms. They were doing music store guitar clinic tours. KZfaq has kind of taken that format, combined it with the guitar store salesmen, and brought that concept to our fingertips. I don't hate on KZfaqrs in general, but I am very picky on what KZfaqrs I watch. I'm not a big fan of the ultra negative KZfaqrs.
