I mean a big problem is also that a lot of games now are designed to be played with the wiki in mind. Like there are games with such obscure mechanics, that you need a wiki to figure them out, but on the other hand are so essential, that if you don't figure them out the game is basically unplayable.

agreed, the only times I play a game with full-on guides even at the beginning, is when I'm playing a game I finished before and playing again, or if I'm not fully invested in the game or at least certain aspects of it. Any game I choose to be invested in, I def don't look up stuff unless super tilted and such There are times say trying to figure out the steps to get secret weapon, but I still wouldn't read guides on story or how to progress the story

It depends. There are just tons of absolutely essential, yet entirely basic mechanics and Details in DS and ER, that aren't ever explained to you. For Example: -the exact equip.-load Borders and how exactly they effect you. -how the parrying actually works. -how to correctly read weapon/damage stats. -what weapon enchantments/improvements have actual use for what build. -how the damage scaling between weapons and Stats works -What kinds of Builds there even are and what they do or do not do -what weapons/equipment is good, the best, or more accurately; actually worth the quite limited and expensive Resources it takes, to max. 'em out. Long Story Short: When playing the soulsbourne games, it's almost obligatory to inform yourself with guides, if you don't wann be entirely oblivious about how the game even works. (this is only applying to the very basics though. All the other Things and especially the bossfights, should be figured out by yourself or at least should have been often attempted by you, before you use guides for them.)
@aloe7794
@aloe7794 Жыл бұрын
on one hand, I agree, but thats when you're the one causing your problem by looking things everywhere sometimes the game is done so badly that you can't figure out stuff on your own, because the mechanics are so obscure and you NEED to use their wiki to figure that out - that's when you're causing problem to your playerbase as a dev I believe

That’s the fate of every mmo sadly, and the main reason why they aren’t popular anymore MMOs used to be a social club to discovery things with strangers Now MMOs are all clicking simulators to make number go up so you can brag that you clicked more times than someone else The social aspects are almost non existent, discovery doesn’t exist when people math out new gameplay features on the first day and tell you what’s worth doing. Like on RuneScape the devs literality tell you the desired xp rates of new activities so you know if it’s worth doing before the update drops. Where’s the discovery in that

Like what's the point in having a hundred different characters or weapons or builds or whatever if people only use the same handful over and over? And good luck to the devs with figuring out how to perfectly balance it all to prevent this. Have yet to see a game where that's accomplished

I think that's what draws me more to new MMOs because it's a complete fresh start for everyone. It almost feels necessary because everyone else researches every little part of the game. Though, what keeps it fresh for older (and newer) games now is glitch hunting which a lot of people find fulfilling.

I've been saying this for years. GPS markers, quick travel and blatantly telling the player what to do and where to go is killing any sort of higher engagement with the medium. We need to evolve and stop viewing games as time wasters. They can be much deeper experiences, but most people only see the "game" side of things.

Yea he's misplaced the blame on the internet and people sharing information, when that happened anyway, the difference is largely in game design. It's not normal for a game to encourage natural exploration anymore, they just tell you things are there and that's it.

I rediscovered this recently. In my teens I used Gamefaqs walk throughs for every game I played because I felt I'd miss out if I couldn't complete it on my own and after Gamefaqs it was KZfaq. Last year I decided to play Pathfinder:Kingmaker blind and it was a blast to go through the story, see the consequences of my actions and to figure out my builds and such.

For me it’s also about time Discovery takes time and it’s much easier to google something then quickly move on. So many games demand an insane amount of time, whereas back in the day a game was playable start to finish in like 4 hours if you knew what you’re doing, so those bits of discovery were required to pad out game time. 4 hours is nothing when you consider that my first terraria play through was 50+, and factorio was 75 hours. That was me trying to discover everything myself, when I could go back and accomplish the same thing in

I also like to discover games by myself. Its much more enjoyable. I have only ever looked up something to spoil myself maybe a handful of times. The last one was because i wasnt going to be able to handle it if a character died that day so i had to look it up. Walkthroughs come out if i REALLY need them and im stuck. It's fantastic to have access to them.

What i love about software games. Is they put heavy focus in putting the story in the environment. You look at the area around you and ask yourself "why is everything like this?" It's the world that tells you the story. It's a classic example of show, don't tell. And honestly that's the best kind of story telling. Avatar the last airbender heavily focused on this type of world building and story telling and it's one of the charms that was unfortunately lost in korra.

This is why you can choose to not know everything beforehand. That kinda sounds like a personal issue. The main problem is that companies wanna rush games instead of taking the time to get this right because they can just do a massive update every week with micropuechases till the games actually finished. Greed is the real issue my friend

It's a choice if you know better. It's reflexive for a lot of people though. Game makes you question/wonder about something, you pick up your phone and ask. Even if its a harmless instance, you'll have inevitably discovered a wiki, making the next time even easier. As a result the collective experience of any "discovery" game will necessary be "taxed". A tax which older games did not have to pay.
@basketballTaco
@basketballTaco Жыл бұрын
@@LycanKai14 Wasn't trying to make it a personal thing but sure, you could say it's self-control. But it's gonna be self-control for, again, the people who already get that there is something rewarding about playing blind. These days that number is decreasing. To think that we'll return to a time where blind playthroughs are the norm is ridiculous. The phones are not gonna be far from the controllers. Ultimately, it means that that discovery type of fun, on a collective level, has decreased. Any individual can still have that fun if they want to though. (And to clarify I didn't mean to agree with the video title or hate on guides, just making a singular point).
@basketballTaco

@@LycanKai14 I'm making a point that's so far from being personal it's strange you're responding this way. The amount of people that play blind has *decreased*. That's it. They're not gonna disappear. But decrease means we can (i would assume) conclude that less people are having the specific discovery experience we're talking about. It's not even a hot take or telling people to do anything. Unless you think that more people play blind after the current state of guides/Wikis? That's like saying more people used AI to cheat on papers before ChatGPT came out.

Not really. If you're on social media at all or if you're even on KZfaq you will be presented with spoilers or just plain jane content that you would've rathered seen for the first time in game. The only way to totally nullify the possibility is to basically abstain from the internet lol. So yeah, I guess it's a personal decision to leave yourself vulnerable to that, but hardly a reasonable one.

The thing for me is the game throws you into the world and that’s it, no cutscenes, no meaningless chitchat with npc. The world itself is the story, it’s players’ choice to focus on gameplay or to discover the lores. Not every games needs to be like this but it’s quite refreshing nonetheless.

There was a time when I was very quick to look up the solution to something. But now, I'm just playing the game by myself, without googling as soon as I'm stuck, and it's so much more fun. I mean, I will probably google for stuff once I've beaten the game, or if what I'm stuck on stops being fun and just becomes frustrating, but I try to maintain the ability to discover things in a game as long as possible, and it's so much more enjoyable and feels so much more organic

I even try to do this with movies, don’t even watch the trailers. I see which movies are coming out and if I feel I’d like to see it I try to avoid it. Currently in the process of avoiding all tears of the kingdom videos atm. But I did have to look up a video because I accidentally got to a certain place too quickly and I was just running around in circles trying to figure out what I was supposed to do. Just a nudge in the right direction and I found out I skipped the entire quest line and needed something for the level. As a kid I would get stuck a lot of times just because I could not read the instructions of what I was supposed to do. But only would I look up things I could do after I’m stuck for as long as I’m willing to be or if I complete the game. My main goal is to finish the game so after that I lose interest and find it hard to go back to places I’ve been and look for things I’ve missed

I look up guides for some games and explore for others. Really depends on how well the game does with it. It also depends on my goal with the game. For example, I’m playing Fallout 76 and I’ve been looking up a lot of stuff. The way I want to play it involves specific goals that would take WAY too long for me to accomplish if I were to have to just explore. Though, I’m hyped for Starfield’s release, and I plan to look up nothing. I’m actually planning to use Obsidian and create my own wiki for myself. I feel like this change might actually alter how I play games altogether, since I do enjoy the research aspect.

The things that got me trully hooked to wow was, in WoD, close to the garrison, you find the mangled body of an orc in the snow with a note from a female orc declaring her love to him, despite their tribes being at war, and to find her you had to follow arrows in the snow made of bones When you reach the other side, you find her body frozen, sitting in a relaxed position besides whats a extinguished fire, with a letter from her companion, being ready to let go of his tribe to be with her From both you get a pair of pendants that can be combined to get a lovers pendant Its a tidbit completed avoidable from the main story, but thanks to this the world seemed a lot more full of life

To everyonr that does that, just play the game. You don't have to play the game perfectly. Have fun and laugh at your mistakes.
