Well, they feel that way because if Canada has 6-7 teams during that time, statistically if a team were selected at random, they'd have 4-5cups. But, it turns out during that time, they haven't had a lot of great seasons between them.

We just need some consistency with the Canadian franchises. The Jets have set themselves to be good for years, with good drafting and patience. A lot of the other Canadian teams could learn from them. Edmonton, especially, when you consider how many top draft picks they have had, and to only have one playoff appearance in the past 12 seasons.

Being a Calgary Flames fan I can tell you that the disputed goal that should have counted in game 6 of the Stanley cup final. if that goal had counted the Calgary Flames would have won the Stanley Cup. (The Stanley Cup was stolen from the Flames thanks to bad referees and a poor video review system). To the credit of the NHL this did lead to better and more in depth Video reviews system (Later on adding the Coaches Challenge) on goals just like the one that should have counted in game 6 against Tampa bay (or any other dismissed goal of its kind).

It was a goal; they didn't want to review it, and when it was reviewed, they knew they screwed the pooch. They waited until the next game to show the replay with a thickened (doubled) highlighted line that "clearly showed" the puck never crossed the line. Then, the play that led to the game-winning goal by the Bolts in OT was off of a blatant trip in front of the official looking right at the play. Calgary got screwed. Nowadays, you can search it on KZfaq and see it without any embellished line thickened to hide the facts.

Aside from Conor McJesus I think the Winnipeg Jets are closer to winning the cup than the Oilers. Their first two offensive lines are loaded with talent Schiefele, Wheeler, Connor, Laine, Stastny & Ehlers. In my opinion, they resemble a team with more pieces in place to get it done. This seasons playoff run helps them regardless.

It is easy to blame it on Bettman joining in the 90s, but you have to go deeper and look at the main issue back then: Canadian teams making their money in Canadian dollars, but having to pay players in American dollars when the exchange rate was absolutely brutal in Canada's favour. Nords and Jets were the smallest of the small market teams and had to move. Calgary and Edmonton couldnt keep their talent, Montreal kept trying to succeed by having French speaking people, Vancouver pretty much the same as the rest. Toronto was really the only team on stable financial ground. Dark times for Canadian Hockey. Keep in mind this is also before a salary cap and no Canadian team was going to be able to compete with the whales of the leAgue

Regarding Edmonton, it's not about the NHL wanting Canadian teams to fail, it's about Gary Bettman taking for granted Canadian money that will be there regardless of whether the Oilers or flames, etc win. He knows he will get money from those markets, he wants to push hockey into new markets to make money that otherwise, the league would never see. It has more to do with Bettman himself, than the NHL. That's why the Oilers were able to go on that dynasty run, because bettman wasn't around yet.

Doing some quick math on the probability that Canadian teams win 0 cups in the years from 1994 to 2017 worked out to be roughly 0.2%. Of course, my math assumes that every team has an equally likely chance to win the Stanely Cup. I assumed a 30 team league throughout that span with 7 Canadian teams.
@Kevin-dp5hv
@Kevin-dp5hv 6 жыл бұрын
The most likely scenario to happen is 5 Cups would be won by Canadian teams. It had a roughly an 18.9% to chance to happen. After that 6 Canadian team cup wins with an 18.2% chance to happen.
@TheHockeyGuy
@TheHockeyGuy 6 жыл бұрын
You're assuming every team has an equal shot at the Cup. Three were won by Chicago. Four were won by Detroit. Three were won by Pittsburgh. That's 10 right there. Edmonton has been a trash fire for most of that span. The Leafs were hot garbage for a decade. The Canucks are the Canucks. The Flames had a really rough time in the late 90s when they were on the "next Canadian team to get moved" list. They have missed the playoffs five of seven years. The Senators had a few good years, fell short against a superior Ducks team in 2007. Montreal has been a dumpster fire minus seasons Theodore and Price dragged them to respectability. Winnipeg just became a contender this season.

Roy was our Mario Lemieux. I remember '93 and the years that followed as ones where top-flight goalies outshone superstar players, and I think had you redrafted the NHL in the mid '90s several goalies including Roy and Brodeur would have gone in the top five. Also, Hasek for a few years in the late '90s was like Orr (at least in footage I've seen) in the early '70s.

It’s nice seeing that Nordique gear you’re wearing, since it fits with the topic of the video. *Edit:* Honestly, McDavid is the reason I have hopes we’ll make the playoffs. The only thing that matters is more defence and decent players. But I gotta respect the fact that these are the teammates we have for McDavid, because it’s gonna be a while until the team gets better teammates for McDavid if he sticks around. It took Toronto a long time, they had Kessel in there until they gave him away. Now they got players like Matthews, Marner, Andersen, etc on that team. Colorado somehow found their way to make the playoffs since they had a bad season last year. It’s gonna be a while when the Oilers climb up that mountain when all the others have found a way to reach it.

The cup comes back to Canada every year from all the players who win it :). Montreal and Toronto have been poorly managed for a long time, Montreal's last win was a lucky good bye to their dynasty. There have only be 6 to 8 Canadian teams out of 27 to 31 teams, so right there the odds are against a CDN team winning. The 90s obviously saw Canadian teams leave and the rest struggle except Toronto due to making revenue in Canadian dollars but with a bad exchange rate paid players in us dollars saw stars leave to American teams that could pay. Calgary was gutted in the 90s and missed playoff hockey for 7 straight years then made a magic run in 04, giving Sutter too much power with a changing game that didnt suit his grinder vision so we never got a centre for iggy and wasted him. Now Cgy looks like they have no identity and I worry Monahan will get too many injuries. Edmonton also mismanaged and it seems they had a rep for players not wanting to play there due to the city. Ottawa always got crushed by Toronto and then peaked and gutted their team. Jets had been gone until 2011. We will see what happens to Toronto when they need to pay Marner and Matthews. I think Edmonton and Calgary are in similair boats have nice pieces but are missing a few key things to finally put it together and dominate like they did in the 80s. Calgary under sutter did well enough to be 16th or 15th best make playoffs lose and never get a good draft pick and we watched as all these teams scored great young talent every draft, a lot of reasons there, but if 27 teams were in Canada and the 6 or 7 teams in America kept winning cups I would say yea there is a conspiracy

A Canadian team can’t sell out a playoff game. There is 10x more Americans than canadiens. It makes sense that teams are being opened in American. Just because you have a team doesn’t mean that team is going to be any good. Every team has had years of poor performance. Of the last decade the same teams are either good or bad with little movement. Once we start seeing guys retire and the changing of the guard so to speak will the league really have a massive change

Can factor in the extra pressure and baggage that needs to overcome to bring it home. Many Canadian teams over the years had their lull years due to management. Now Jets and Maple Leafs have the best shot and would be insane if an all Canadian final happened. Last time that happened was when my Calgary Flames beat the Montreal Canadiens in 1989. Also believe that's the last time teams 1 and 2 overall faced off for the cup too.

I been arguing with your statements a lot, and I don't mean to come across negatively, you make A LOT of points I agree with, and I have learned so much from your season by season recap, which I have to give major kudos to, because I thought I knew just about everything there was to know about the history of the NHL. But you mentioned something along the lines of why have we never seen a Canadian juggernaut team get shafted by the nhl and prevent them from winning. I would argue that the current maple leafs cap situation is the perfect example of the contrary. When Roger's signed the broadcasting deal in Canada, where they essentially bought a monopoly on broadcasting rights, the biggest selling point was that they would contribute to the NHL's revenue sharing program, and therefore, the salary cap would increase, at least a little bit, for the duration of the Rogers/NHL contract. I may be remembering wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not, and that was a big part of the deal. It seems kind of funny that when the leafs reach a point in time when they need to sign Mathews, Nylander, and Marner, among others, after locking up Tavares, suddenly the Salary cap doesn't increase.
@thebacc2087
@thebacc2087 2 жыл бұрын
Covid and loss of revenue related to it prevented any salary cap increase and its pretty simple, they cant afford to pay their players right now so why increase the cap to instill more debt on teams. Toronto isnt a complete team by any means, not a juggernaut at all. Suspect goaltending and almost non existent defense combined with offence that never shows up come postseason. Montreal didn't have a choice but to get rid of Roy. Roy went to the GM in the Forum in front of the big lights on Saturday Night and ordered a trade. The Forum didn't have a glass behind their bench and the GM sat right behind the bench. They put a guy who embarrassed Roy on Radio Canada just a few weeks before said as an analyst that Roy was a bum in much more powerful language and trust me Roy knew because the Montreal media didn't let him forget. Oh and BTW Mario Tremblay AKA the Blueberry won a cup as a player with Roy as his goalie so they probably knew each other well.

If you remember Montreal's coach was Mario Tremblay. They didn't get along and when Mario refused to pull Roy in that game in Montreal against Detroit was the straw that broke the camels back. When he came off the ice he went to the gm sitting next to the players bench and told him he would never play another game for Montreal. Patrick tied their hands they had no choice.

Love your channel and you make alot of sense. However I remember clear as a day watching an interview with Bettman (just before the playoffs of 93. Just after he started as commissioner stating, He personally believes having a canadian team in the finals would hurt the league, while having 2 Canadian teams in the final would be even worse. Back in 92 or 93 that happenen. Also when Calgary and Edmonton were in finals 2 seasons i a row, Bettman wasnt 2 pleased.

think its more to do with numbers (only about 25% of nhl teams are Canadian) times(*) the exchange rate between the us and Canadian dollar and/or tax rates and the nhl's lack of a internal tax/method to equalise that balance between the two nations of its teams.

The bruins definitely performed better in the 2011 finals, but the games that the Canucks won weren't just because of Luongo. Look at the time on attack and shot totals in all of the 7 games. If I remember correctly the Canucks outshot them in 4-5 of the 7 games

There are more than 3 times the sheer number of teams in America than Canada it’s really the ratio of teams that certainly plays a big factor. Even more so when two Canadian teams have to play each other 1 is guaranteed to be eliminated. I’ve watched the Canadian teams just get systematically eliminated since 1993, even the ones that reached far into the playoffs or even the final, you can just sense that they will fall short somehow.

What about last post season where it was Ducks v. Oilers? There was a lot of goalie interference that never got called? I’m not saying there’s a conspiracy there, but what I am saying is that, if they did call most to all of the goalie interference, the oilers would have had a better shot of going all the way to at least the final.

Even with the statistics against us, I think Canada is overdue to win a cup. Hoping to see one before the end of the decade. That said, I'll gladly share our passion of hockey with our southern neighbors and all the international players joining the league. I still think Canada is extremely relevant in hockey. Its a a extremely popular sport here and we got a big pool of talents and some excellent teachers for those players. Our cultural attachment to that sport make it very likely that any emerging talents are quickly discovered. Think of it that way: the genius of Mozart is not only thanks for his innate talents but for his own father tutelage. Papa Mozart was an accomplished musician in his own right and he was able to recognize his son's talents and he had the the experience to train him. If Mozart was the son of a farmer, he would probably never have discovered his affinity to composition. Think of all of the potential hockey savants that never had the chance to accomplish their potential because they did not have access to a ice ring or they lacked the local competition to push themselves. That's why Canada punch about its weight in hockey and winter Olympics despite its relatively small population. The way we value those activities make it more likely to have that rare combo of nature and nurture that creates legendary athletes. Lately though, hockey seems to have grown in popularity outside of Canada and its more and more accessible to potential stars. Canadian pride aside, that is only a good thing for the sport and I always find it endearing when a foreign player find fame and stardom in the NHL.

Its interesting to look back on this and see how its came out. Toronto: Top 5 team, third in the atlantic, will make the playoffs, probably wont go to 2nd round. Trending up, but hitting the cap when Marner comes asking for 10+ will hurt them very badly, their cup window may be ending sooner than they would like. Edmonton: McDavid. Trending down but with smart(er) managment and 97 anythings possible. Their cup window is anywhere from 3-5 years away from opening, and who knows if McDavid will stick around that long. Calgary: Top 3 team in the league right now. Cup Contender, will make playoffs, will probably go deep. Young team, with strong vets, powerful defence and lethal offence. Trending up. Their cup window is open for the next few years. Montreal: Top 10 team, may or may not make the playoffs, moreso due to an outrageous Atlantic division than how the team has played. Very young and fast team with a very deep prospect pool, probably best in the league. Trending up. Cup window 1-2 years away, but anythings possible if they make the playoffs. Vancouver: Might make playoffs next year, good looking future, Pettersson, Horvat, and Boeser will carry that franchise for years to come, and if Hughes and DiPietro can prove themselves they'll be a team to watch. Trending up. Cup window is 3 years away at max Ottawa: Lol. Trending down at terminal velocity. Good luck Brady. Cup window is basically a wall at this point. Winnipeg. Top 5 team. Laine may be having his issues this season but if he gets going in the playoffs then anythings possible. Solid coaching, solid offense, solid defense, solid goaltending. Good team with a good-looking future. Trending up. Cup window is open for next 5 years or more. Really, Canada has 2, maybe 3 cup contenders: Calgary, Winnipeg, and maybe Toronto. 4 playoff teams, Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg. All but Edmonton and Ottawa have good looking futures, and Edmonton has a much better future than Ottawa. I would be very surprised if we hit the mid-20s without another Canadian cup winner, but like I've said before, anything can happen once you reach the playoffs.

It's funny how you say the Flames aren't on the path to a contender - like the Canucks, Oilers, Canadiens, and Senators - except that the Flames have a solid defensive core and elite forwards in Monahan, Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Backlund (arguably Bennett has the potential if he can break out). The Flames are a Jets team from a year or two ago looking for a solid starter in net.

An important factor is the Canadian dollar which unfairly puts Canadian franchises at a significant disadvantage. Also Gary Bettman is horrible and is well known for favouring American teams... it’s more of making the conditions favourable for American teams... Also 1993? mainly because of Gary Bettman, before he arrived 7 out of 21 NHL teams were Canadian, now its 7 out of 32 teams, so much poorer odds and he is responsible for moving Nordiques to Colorado (3 cups could have been in Quebec). And the Flames were robbed of a Stanley Cup in 2004.

Vancouver was a Schneider in Game 4 or 6 away from winning the Stanley Cup. Let's be fair Patrick Roy asked for a trade after being left in net on a bad night with a bad team in front of him. There was bad blood there, I don't think they could keep him. They did not get enough for him. Also, to be fair to the Nordiques, they won the Stanley Cup because of Roy and also because Eric Lindros refused to play there, lol That Calgary team that last won in the early 90s was my favourite team to watch ever.

7 Canadian teams, 31 total (30 for most of this duration). A Canadian team should get a cup every 4-5 years statistically speaking. However, that's just lottery thinking if someone were to look at it like that, it doesn't work that way. Teams that are Cup contenders tend to be for several years at a time. The last 7 Cups went to only 3 different teams. Winnipeg looks to be in a good spot for several years of Cup contention.

Regarding what you say about Toronto winning a cup. The league will make money from the toronto market, regardless of whether they win or not. Sure they'll make more money in that market, where they're already making a lot of money, but if the leafs don't win, they still make a lot of money out of that market, if Washington wins, they're gonna make more money than they ever have from the Washington market, and they're laying the groundwork to make way more money in the washington market in the future, because now that washington has won a championship, the fans are more invested, and they will pay more attention and spend more money. Just using washington as an example because they were the most recent small market team to win
