Why Hitler Hated Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich's badge between 1938 and 1945, featuring a rather conspicuous symbol, is frequently shared online and on social media, as if to suggest that the club has or had close ties to the ideology associated with Germany's darkest era.
But it isn't true. Well, the badge is, but not the sentiment.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at the reality of Bayern Munich's relationship with fascism, the history of the club, and why they were hated by Hitler and his supporters.

There was once an article that claimed Hitler was a Schalke fan. Schalke responded saying it was nonsense and that Schalke were just the most successful team during Hiter's reign. They stated "To conclude Hitler was a fan of Schalke 04 because they won most of the titles during his regime must make Margaret Thatcher a Liverpool fan. Funnily enough she didn't make the list."

Schalke was basically the Bayern of the 1930s and early 40s, just absurdly dominant in the same way that Bayern is today. Of course, the Nazis tried to use this for their propaganda and explained their success as being due to inherently German characteristics - awkwardly, Schalke's team and especially its stars was in large part of Polish heritage, with the two defining Schalke legends of the time having the not, uh, exactly uber-germanic names Szepan and Kuzorra.

When Jesse Owens won gold in Berlin, Hitler praised him. @@SamS-uv2ql I think the guy is suggesting that the museum doesn't do enough to dispel the myths about Bayern and Nazism, rather than that they actively "present themselves in a worse light" there. Like, maybe they don't have enough space to talk about it with all the room the last 60 years of success must take up, or maybe there is a will there to play it safe, avoid controversy etc. Or some reason that isn't immediately obvious to me. I wouldn't know myself if that is fair or not as I've never even been to that museum, or Germany at all. But that is what "jackpalmer" is saying, I'm pretty sure.

There is absolutely nothing that indicated the club is or was pro-Nazi. There are literally lgbt flags amongst Bayern ultras every FUCKING game. Anti-nazism is deeply rooted in Bayern and it's a well known fact. While we're on the subject of the Nazis trying and failing to use football for propaganda purposes, here's one of my all-time favourite footballing anecdotes: In 1938, England played Germany in Berlin, and were forced to perform the Nazi salute as part of the UK's appeasement policy at the time. The players *hated* being made to do so, and fueled by that rage, they thumped Germany 6-3. One of England's six goals - described by Stanley Matthews as "probably the greatest goal I ever saw" - was scored by a Jewish forward named Len Goulden. From 25 yards out, he struck a volley with enough force to partially rip the net off the crossbar, then wheeled away and yelled "Let 'em salute that one!" Legend.

Small correction Alfie: By all accounts, Hitler didn’t take Jesse Owens winning some medals very badly. He apparently either waved or nazi saluted Jesse Owens in a quick exchange, according to Jesse Owens himself and other eye witnesses. He didn’t officially congratulate any winners of medals, except a few German ones I believe, because the IOC had told him he should either congratulate everyone, or nobody. He chose to congratulate nobody. Foreign press explained this as Jesse Owens being ‘snubbed’ by Hitler and that Hitler was ‘very upset’, but all accounts we have of the Olympics point towards Hitler not losing a single night’s sleep over it. Jesse Owens himself has always maintained the United States treated him even worse than the Germans. The US was still an apartheid state at this point. People simply pretended he never won a medal. While other athletes received awards and celebrations, he and the other black athletes were basically told to sit in the back of the bus again. Only in 2016, Barack Obama invited the families of Jesse Owens and other black athletes over to show an official sign of appreciation from the white house.

Alfie, you have outperformed your consistent quality and insight with this video. Outstanding work. Works like this are becoming iincreasingly valuable as fascism makes another of its periodic resurrections. Your observations of Jewish integration into German society during the period of prosperity early in the century illustrate a fundamental fact about fascism. The bullying and persecution of The Other only appear when societies are stressed, most commonly by economic crisis (the Great Depression), but also during ethnic migrations, periods of national humiliation (Treaty of Versailles), and most recently as Western culture has encountered the inflection point of cultural evolution. It is most obvious in the U.S. where the abrupt increase in the rate of cultural evolution, with the advent of The Information Age has revealed our species' inability to adapt to environmental change beyond a certain rate. American society is beginning to turn on itself in a manner reminiscent of 1930's Germany, with the emergence of Hitler analogs like Trump. As in Germany under Hitler, our fascists are searching for scapegoats, the weakest groups in society to subject to potentially fatal bullying. My point is Thank you for helping to illustrate this particular human failing in such a timely fashion.

Some Commeters after this Video: Come on Alfie, why are you always making political references. I mean now you even comparing people to Hitler (I am not smart and can't read the title or listen to the video). Before this I was a long-term subscriber of 2 days. Now after you suddenly turned political, you have lost me and I am sure you will now change your ways, because I am a weirdo in the comments. Irony Off: I have read parts of this word for word on this channel and its baffling.

Yeah Alfie, just tone down literally anything that makes your channel special! Just kidding, I'm quite glad someone dives as deep into topics as he does. There is already more than enough shallow entertainment focused content on KZfaq about Football (which can also be executed properly, don't get me wrong). I don't get these people, just watch something else and quit acting as if Alfie's Style is objectively flawed with him mentioning politics. There is a difference between valid criticizm and your own opinion. I for example wouldn't go to the Irish Guys channel and comment about me disliking his loud screechy voice. I just don't like it as much but there is nothing objectively wrong with it. Maybe a lot of people writing that kind of stuff use football as an escape from real life and feel uncomfortable hearing about the harsh reality.

Hats off for tackling such a controversial and difficult topic. I appreciate you want to tackle a negative narrative and shine a light on a side that people outside of Germany won't have heard about. However you could just as well point out that many at the club were dedicated followers of the regime and joined the NSDAP long before they actually came to power. VP Harlacher comes to mind, but there were others. There were a lot of dedicated Nazis at the club, otherwise it would not have been allowed to continue. I suggest that people who are interested do some additional reading and make up your own mind. I personally think you are being a bit to kind to Bayern, but it's nice that you remind people that there were people who showed resistance in Germany. It's a very complex era of German history and you'll find that most sporting institution will have similar stories. By that I mean people who didn't agree with persecutions of jews and others had to find little ways to show disapproval, but ultimately had to toe the line.

10:54 it should be noted here, that Hitler (and probably also Hirsch for that matter, though I cant say for sure, since Hirsch got a second class iron cross whilst Hitler got a first class one and I am not sure if the second class one was actually more likely to be gotten by actually doing brave things in WW1) did not actually receive that iron cross for extraordinary bravery (though Hitler would have wanted you to believe otherwise). During that time most soldiers who received that thing actually were not the ones fighting on the frontline but actually serving the higher ups way behind the front lines and sucked up well enough. From all we know today, Hitler most likely was rather a coward than a war hero in WW1.

Even if the history was true… why should you be shamed? The modern club is obviously far from Nazi. The fans are very liberal and inclusive. Btw the history about landauer, his role and importance for the club was researched by the fans and not the club itself. That’s the thing about German football. As a fan you can literally change your club and motivate them for taking action in professional research and so on. Also the new statue in front of the Allianz Arena of Gerd Müller was also initiated by its fans.

Maybe the fact that bayern is 10-20x richer, with more members and thus more revenue than any other German club, plus the fact that bayern regularly poach all their rival's best players to ensure their continued stranglehold domination of German football, as well as your arrogant and unlikeable players might have something to do with why Bayern aren't exactly popular. Idk tho, just a theory

@@krisdudas-hjelms7036 So basically, what you told me is, rational reason to hate Bayern is pure jealousy. I can understand why you would think that. Can't relate tho. In footballing terms, Bayern is absolutely unmatched and it does not seem like their dominance will stop anytime soon, not just in Germany. Bayern is a true testament of how a club can be so successful, great, and still not be pulled through the mud by anyone, unlike certain Spanish club that pays off refs, was deeply intertwined with Franco's fascist regime, overpays average football players, humiliates their legends and still gets trashed regulary by footballing institutions that Bayern München and Real Madrid are. Keep crying, just not here on my comment. Go find some other miserable fans of smaller clubs, they will understand you better than I ever could. 8-2.

🇧🇬 🇧🇬 🇧🇬 Day 15 - Alfie, please do a video on the pitiful situation the Bulgarian national football team is currently in. Here are a couple of points to give you an idea about what I'm talking about: - Currently, the team is in a streak of 8 winless games, at the bottom of its qualification group for the 2024 Euro, with no chances of qualifying, after losing to opponents such as Montenegro and Lithuania. - The team's last win was almost a year ago - on 16.11.2022 in a friendly against Cyprus. Our last win in an official match was more than a year ago - on 26.09.2022 against North Macedonia. - The national football team of Bulgaria has been constantly performing bad for at least the last 20 years. The last big tournament we played was the 2004 Euro in Portugal, where we were humiliated in the group stage. - Many supporters blame the current bosses of the Bulgarian Football Union for this downfall. The most notable of them are Borislav Mihaylov, Emil Kostadinov and Yordan Lechkov - 3 players who were part of the great 1994 WC team which reached the semi-finals of the tournament. Sadly, those people's success as players has been overshadowed by their lack of capability or willingness to resolve many of the problems in our football - the out-of-date training systems, the poor football infrastructure etc. What's worse is that they refuse to resign a failure after another and they have changed the rules of the union in a way that makes them irremovable for more than 18 years. - Recently a couple of players from the next generation - Dimitar Berbatov, Stiliyan Petrov and Martin Petrov started a campaign, trying to overthrow the aforementioned but as I said the rules are in the bosses' favour. - Meanwhile fans are getting really angry with the situation and are starting to take measures. During the last couple of weeks, at many matches of the First and Second Football Leagues the fans were chanting against Mihaylov and company and displayed banners against them. Of course, the BFU fined the clubs for "obscene chants and banners". - A campaign was started on social media, calling fans of all local clubs to put their differences aside and come to the Euro qualifier with Hungary on 16.11 and show their disapproval of the current BFU leaders. Later, the Bulgarian Football Union, citing commands from UEFA regarding safety, moved the match from the "Vasil Levski" stadium in Sofia to "Hristo Botev" in Plovdiv. And now the match will be played behind closed doors, because they’re scared of the protests. The fans, though, are still planning to attend the game and show their disapproval for the BFU, from around the stadium. More than 2500 Hungarian fans, who have already bought tickets for the game, are due to be compensated for their losses. Some of them, who had already reserved plane tickets and hotels, are planning to come over and join the protest though. That's the main points, I'm sure that if you dig a little you'll find much more. Please consider doing such a video, the anti-BFU sentiments are getting stronger and we need to disturb those self-serving ex-legends in every way possible. Thank you and keep up the good work!
