CarGurus video producer Elliot Haney invites you in for a look at his personal car: a 2016 Ford Focus.
When Elliot finds something that works for him, he sticks with it. With Ford discontinuing the Focus, that puts Elliot in a bit of a pickle. What car should he buy next?
Elliot always appreciated the Focus's style, simplicity, and practicality. Good on gas and with a convenient hatchback design, it was all the car he's ever really needed. Plus, he was able to get this one at a great price.
Thinking about buying your own Ford Focus? Check out CarGurus for great deals from great dealers: cargur.us/zXDgS

This is a nice car. I had an 08 civic, it is a pos, the car market is so insane I just had to sell it. I bought my car for $3000, wrecked it, didn’t repair, and sold it for $3800. I got a 2014 hatchback titanium for 8700. I feel like I barely even bought it. Straight down payment right away.

Great video. Thanks for presenting an articulate, fair minded, honest, and realistic look at this car. My dad is old and has decided to stop driving. He bought his 2016 Focus se hatchback new and has put 10,000 mile on it. I'll be buying the car in a few weeks and have been looking for an honest look at this car. Thank you again.

On the evening of June 10, 2021, I was driving my yellow 2004 manual Ford Focus ZX3. A woman ran a stop sign and totaled my little beloved car. I have a 2013 Ford Focus Titanium. The title says it is blue, but I see purple. The Titanium is some what of a luxury car....everything I don't want on my car. I bought it for the manual transmission. I will learn to love it after the deep pain I continue to feel since I lost my little yellow Ford Focus ZX3 dissipates. Nice video.

I rented a couple of late model Focus for my drive from Minneapolis to Bemidji MN where I visit my son, a four hour drive. I found the mileage great and the performance pretty good especially in the city traffic, way better than most 4-cylinder automatics. I honestly didn't realize that it was a DCT. When I needed a small car I opted for a Focus knowing that the clutch may be a problem. Found a 2014 with 34K, garage kept, new tires at a good price. After a couple of months I realized that the transmission needed service and after reading peoples comments I expected a problem from the dealer. Now the problems only really showed up after a 30 - 40 minute drive, poor pullouts and a bad slipping in 3rd, so I made sure that I drove around until the problem couldn't be missed. I then parked it away from the service dept. door so its had to be driven before it cooled down. The service guy drove it around back, came in and said it definitely had a problem. The next day it was repaired, no charge not even for the loaner car. So if your car is doing what you say get it to a dealer and have it fixed, I'd suggest a smaller dealer. So I give Ford props for fixing the problem. I contrast this to Chevy whom I bought a new 2002 4X4 Silverado with 5.2L V8 for north of $35K. Used oil and developed piston slap and the dealers all denied the problem. Was told the dipstick wasn't calibrated properly, all engines use oil and the startup noise, sounded like a diesel for the first minute of running, was normal. Never did get it fixed, sold it cheap.

Excellent ride. I test drove that Focus in July 2016 when I was in the market at that particular time. I pondered for days on end while reviewing brochures and recommendations. I had it narrowed Hyundai, Kia, or Ford. I found out the Ford's 1.6 in the Fiesta was very similar to Hyundai and Kia models of the same size.. However, Hyundai's Elantra GT and Kia's Forte5 only boasted 1.8L to Ford's 2.0L engine. Thus, Ford won that argument. I ended up getting a 2014 Ford Fiesta Hatchback. I got it high mileage. So, I felt stupid about that. Fuel economy was good, though. About 34 mpg. After the warranty dropped out, it was 5 yrs old and had 80K on it. I decided that it was time for an upgrade. Hyundai's Elantra GT was calling my name. As was Kia's Forte. I tested both. Loved the ElantraGT. Dealerships couldn't get me in one at a decent price. I got the Forte because I really missed driving a stick. However, I miss having a hatchback. I drive my wife's Hyundai Kona, if I wanna drive a hatch, nowadays. Iits slightly larger than the ElantraGT. Has the same engine as well. As for recommendations as to what your next vehicle should be, that's up to you. I'd definitely look over Hyundai and Kia. They've come a long way in workmanship. Their warranty is unbeatable. If you look at the amenities, their standard equipment are considered options in other models.

If you think your next car might need to hold a car seat at all it might be worth looking into the Mazda CX-5. It has the zip and handling of a smaller car but you don't need to break your back to reach the middle of the back seat.

The cars equivalent to the Ford Focus that I recommend are from the Hyundai/Kia Group & are excellent in your specific quest. eg. Hyundai Elantra Sedan or GT Coupe (in Aussie & Euro the i30) OR Kia Cerato both in Hatch & Sedan. Naturally, Toyota Corollas be they Sedan or Hatchbacks would also be fine. All of the above have high levels of reliability & Hyundai has 7 or 5 year Warranty while Kia's 7 year Warranty Led the automotive field, such was their confidence in their reliability. Also, Mazda & Subaru equivalents are recommended although their warranty may be less.

It is really sad that Ford sells only trucks and suv's in the USA and Canada, but that is what most people want to buy and Ford has to make money. We loved our Ford Focus Electrics, the interior was great and the styling was really beautiful. Ford had really cheap leases, but the buy-out price at the end was much higher than the car was worth. Our car ended up at another Ford dealer and was sold for half as much as Ford wanted to charge us. Ford would not renegotiate the residual value of our cars. We also leased Ford Cmax PHEV's, which are not sold here anymore. We did pay the residual price at the end of the lease, because we didn't want to give it back.

Dont get this car i have one had it since 2016 bought it new, the first issue started at 500 miles the computer was having issues causing my fuel gauge to say i was on empty when it was full took 3 attempts from ford service to figure it out then around 5k miles the transmission started acting up it jerks on acceleration and when im on a hill at a stop sign or stop light it rolls backwards like a clutch, also vibrates on acceleration and bogs down while going up hill so I gotta stay on the gas, the lemon law for where i bought mine said i had to have had it repaired atleast 3 times but everytime i brang it in they said nothing was wrong or it didnt happen for them when they test drove it, so now im stuck with it😫

I have this car, it’s ok. Had to make some upgrades, which I didn’t mind doing since the car was meh. But that said, after changing out the head-unit to an 8 inch screen, installing a Mustang Throttle body and a Magnaflow exhaust, the car is much nicer to drive now. I plan to adding coilovers and sway bars from Whiteline to improve the suspension

We've owned two of the Focus dogs and both were absolutely terrible cars. Why my wife insisted on replacing the first one with another Focus is beyond belief. The DCT transmissions were in for service more times than I can count. The 2016 is part of a class action suit now over the transmission fiasco. Caveat emptor.

I went from a 2013 Fiesta SE manual to a 2018 Focus SEL. Sadly no manual transmission was available so I had to take my chances with Ford's infamous powershift automatic. When ford announced they were discontinuing the Focus in America I said fine, I'm discontinuing my long-standing relationship with Ford. However, a new candidate has emerged. I'm giving serious thought to a used Escape Hybrid as my next purchase. I'm not a fan of SUVs so it will be a bit of a stretch but I like the combination of power, fuel economy, and creature comforts. I won't be in the market for a new car for a few years and there are a few other candidates including the Camry XSE hybrid, the Accord EX Hybrid even the new Hyundai Tuscon Hybrid. Who knows where I'll be by then?

I considered the Ford Focus when I bought my car in 2017; however, on the Kia Forte you just got a lot for your money. This is my 2nd Kia I’ve had and I’ve had absolutely no problems out of either vehicle. I bought the Kia Forte ex for the same reasons you chose the focus, I wanted the leather seats and technology. It’s been an amazing car and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. If you’re looking for good compact sedan with decent fuel economy and reliability I’d highly recommend the Kia Forte or Hyundai Elantra

I bought a 2000 focus hatchback. It was the worst car I’ve ever had, hands down. Ignition locked on me twice, leaving the car immobilized. Steel cable connected to the accelerator from the throttle body snapped during rush hour in Boston leaving me fearing for my life. One of the straps holding the gas tank let go, again during rush hour traffic in Boston, leaving the gas tank dragging on the pavement til it wore a hole in it leaking gas all over the highway. And yet again, during the infamous Boston rush hour traffic, one of the control arms collapsed causing me to seek the nearest exit and hope I didn’t die in the process. Ford truly does not give two shits about its customers or their safety. Buyer beware.

I have a 12 model and I like the way the vehicle looks but it has the transmission from hell. I heard it was a grounding problem with the 2012 model so I took it upon myself to fix these grounding points for the transmission being two under the air box and the other being the negative connection to the battery and honestly I do not see how that has made the transmission shift any better. Ford was suppose to bring back the focus in 2022 but it never happened. If Ford ever brings back this particular model please me sure it is engineered better. Thank you in advance.

I had a 90’s Ford Taurus with a bum transmission, a 2005 Santa Fe with a bum transmission , kinda done with it . If it were just me I’d drive a stick, but the wife won’t .

I guess that's just how this car... drives?
