I think the 1.6 were actually a modified Zetec engine which was belt driven. The larger 1.8 and 2.0 were the Mazda-derived Duratec with chain drive. Confusingly the 1.6 was also renamed Duratec even though it was really a Zetec. And yes, I am fun at parties!!!!

Afaik the mk2 1.6 (the 115bhp version not the 99bhp) had the sigma engine. The 1.6 ecoboost is the turbocharged variant of that. Everyone says zetec... But Ford also conned people by having 'Zetec' as a trim level on its cars, not the 'Zetec' engine. It was clever marketing because even today those who had a Zetec trim, call its engines a Zetec... Which was a very reliable engine, when they didnt!

I had a 2009 ford focus, the facelift to this. I bought it for £1200 at 97k miles and had it for 3 years. It was flawless! I drove it up to 123k and sold it for £1200, just as much as I paid. 3 years after selling it I still occasionally see it on the road today. The mighty 1.6 petrol is clearly going strong still! One correction is that the 1.6p is belt driven as I did get the cambelt replaced on mine. Also the clutch being high I think is just a characteristic of these, I've driven a few and they have all been like that.

Not true. I bought my 2011 Focus 1.6 ecoboost nearly 4yrs ago and the clutch bite is so low to the floor, hardly need to raise the foot before the 'bite'. A good clutch? Aftermarket clutch? Or an outlier? (Seriously soooo low to the floor and not high at all).
@-never-gonna-give-you-up-
@-never-gonna-give-you-up- 4 ай бұрын
@@CrazyInWeston there are exceptions, but I've gotten 4 fords in my life so far all varying from models and years, and every ford i had, had a high bite point (1 had it's clutch replaced at a ford dealership aka OEM clutch) I've yet to experience a ford with a low bite point. It could be aftermarket or perhaps they lowered the bite point? Or it could be normal from factory.

This has been use by the AA as a tuition vehicle back in the day. If you look at the bulkhead you'll see two holes where the dual controls were mounted and feel the passenger footwell floor for the outline of the foam padding that had to be removed to install the dual pedals. These cars were all zetec models on GC,GD,GF and GJ regs. I used to be with them back in 2011 and picked my first car up from Hoo In Rochester Kent.

I had an 09 Titanium 2.0 Diesel and it was great, never let me down, cheap to run and comfortable. The saddest day was when it was written off after a head on collision with a bastard joy rider. Bird's and cars have been in an constant battle since the invention of the automobile. One time me and my father took our Dacia Logan to the market and parket it under a tree, ten minutes later we returned with a load of bird droppings on the bonnet, roof and the windshield. I looked up to see the pigeon scalleys looking down at us, long story short we cleaned it all off temporarily with a sponge and some water before taking it to the car wash. I'm a first generation Focus fan, they just look better in my opinion than the later generation Focuses.

I had a 2007 estate version of this from 2009 to 2014. Really good to drive and a simple, reliable car.

Love those early Focuses. Have to say Matt, the cheaper the car , the more interesting the video!

Had one of these, a 2007 zetec also and took it from 75,000 to 150,000 miles and apart from needing a replacement power steering pipe it was faultless. Great cars.

Another great production. may I suggest tracking down MK2 ST 225 for a future video, they are currently about as cheap as they are going to be & will be a future classic

Thanks for that great video Matt. The Ford Focus. The car you can always rely on. The car you'd recommend to a friend. A few years ago, someone I know was selling their 1995 Toyota Starlet. I advised them to get a Focus, and they a 2007 one, and love it. I was waiting for a bus last year and saw a 2008 focus that looked in excellent condition. Before that I saw another Focus in very good condition, year. 2000. That got me even more interested in the focus because it told me because I worked out that one could get a 2007 to 2010 focus, look after it very well and get ten good years out of it. I don't no why Ford didn't do this in England, but here in Ireland, the smallest size engine is 1.4. The only car that size that started off as a 1.6 here was the Audi A3, and 1 series BMW.

I love the early MK II Focus... Still look great to me... lovely, simple clean lines... Pretty much bomb-proof mechanicals... Alas, most have succumbed to rust... :(

Always think you check oil and water levels first before you start the engine on such an old car Matt

I owned a Mk2 Focus Econetic. Bought it on an 09 plate in 2012 and kept it a few years and it never missed a beat. FANTASTIC CAR. Only £30 to tax, 62 + mpg and did over 800 miles to a tank of diesel and it was lovely to drive. God I miss that car.

My mate Mal has one of these. Solid cars, he ran me to Bristol Eye Hospital some years back, after my left retina detached overnight as I slept. He did say that his brother's mk. 1 Focus 1.8 was fair bit pokier and had better soundproofing, but the chain driven cam in this is a worry free boon, for sure.

Im driving a 07 Focus Ghia. Its so comfy to sit in and has just enough little driver perks to keep me satisfied. Its got about 98k on the clock and has never caused me any issues. I put it through its last MOT and ot passed with no advisories. The only major issue I've got with it is a severe boot leak, which appears to be common on them. Its a typically boring car but i love it!

I still have one of these but a 1.8 TDCi Style with 137,000 miles. Pretty solid cars and cheap to fix when they do need something. Bought mine for £1500 in 2018 and besides the usual consumables it hasn't needed much. Coincidentally mine also has two Avon front tyres but Apollo's on the back and the AC (which still works) has the button worn off just the same as this one.

Probably the best engine you could have in a focus the 1.6 zetec/duratec. The only thing i would worry about with one of these is rust everything else will just go forever.

Hi, great video, just a quick one - the 1.6 petrol zetec is a timing belt engine not a chain. Actually had one myself, was great car - did 255K on the original engine and gear box !!
