I go over my choice of engine and airframe. If you have any questions comment below.

I built my HDS in 1996-1997 I now have 1675 hrs on it with a a Jabiru 2200 now its 23yrs old and I am 79YO man still flying it

Okay, I wouldn't have guessed the 2200 Jabiru would be enough for the HDS. What's your empty weight, climb at gross, and cruise speed? Thanks.

Following in your footsteps now, except with a 601 XL B. the FWF is a little more expensive today, but so is bread!

Thanks for answering my questions. Sounds like you got lucky finding the plane partially built and for a good price.

Thank you for posting this. I appreciate your insight. I am considering purchasing a partially built 601 HDS project from a friend. It comes with an almost complete Corvair engine. If I go through with the purchase I may be contacting you in the future, if you don't mind. There are sure to be things that will come up and your experience is invaluable. Again, thanks for posting.

Wow. I have the same exact situation going on! Someone offered a 601 XL to me, as they ordered it in 2001. I am gonna try to take it off his hands, and hopefully find an engine sometime in the future here!

When dealing with anyone in the experimental aviation market, find out out ahead of time whether the parts you need are in stock now, and they can ship out that same week you inquire about it. Otherwise, you may be waiting a long long time unexpectedly because of their small backyard company business model.

working with Zenith has been great. they always ship parts quickly.

Thanks for sharing! How much do you have invested "out of pocket" in the project?

What’s the ceiling on the 601? Could I buy it and train up to instruments ratings in it? I don’t have time to build one but I’m in love with it so I’d maybe buy one used and go from there.

Oh, I do have a question already. I always thought that if I did a plane of this series, I would want to configure it as a taildragger. I have about 10 hours in a J-3 and really enjoyed the tail dragger experience. And I think the 600 series aircraft look a lot cooler as a TG. The one I'm considering is already standing on tricycle gear. I figured I'd just finish it that way and convert it later if I just had to have it. Might be better off anyway as the J-3 is known to be a very docile TG and my total time is only about 180 hrs., mostly in a C-177 and various C-150 and Cherokees. I'm just interested in your take on the 601 HDS as a TG vs. as a Tri. Especially in crosswinds. Does it seem to want to groundloop? Thanks a bunch in advance.
@zenvairpilot2 жыл бұрын
the 601 series are very docile tail draggers. I have a little over 200 hrs tail wheel time and have flow a few types. The 601 behaves kinda like a hybrid of a stinson 108 and a Vans Rv. They have a ton of cross wind authority due to the all flying rudder. One of the tail wheel types I have limited time in is a 170, and the Zenith is a lot more forgiving than the 170.

@@zenvairpilot Ah, that is indeed enlightening. Thank you so much!

How many HP? 110hp? What cruise speed do you get and climbing performance? 11k is a very good price for an aviation type engine.
@zenvairpilot4 жыл бұрын
The engine makes 100hp as I have it set up at max power. In climb out I get 1300fpm initial and 800fpm sustained at 75kts. cruise I get 100kts. I am looking at making some changes to the prop that has the potential to increase my cruise speed to 105-110. I am running a warp drive 2 blade prop (66"). What I am looking at doing is having the tips tapered. Doing so would allow me to increase the blade angle while maintaining my take off performance. That may be a test for a later video.

That is good figures. The 601 HDS is very underrated and an absolute joy to fly. Mine have 300hrs on it now. I have fitted a big bore kit from Edgeperformance to get a 114hp from the Rotax 912uls and I have a constant speed prop so I fly a lot faster. But, there are a lot of planes out there that cost much more and does not fly as nice as the HDS.

Have you flown a 750 stol? If so, do you think your 100hp vair would be enough oomph?
@zenvairpilot3 жыл бұрын
I have flown in one. There are several examples of corvair powered 750's. Fred Thomas is one that comes to mind.

@@zenvairpilot thanks for responding, was the one you flew 100hp? Nice plane, nice engine, nice channel, man. I’ve got my 750 Vfin done, starting on stab, wondering if I need a 120hp vair or if 2700cc would be enough.

Unfortunately, Heinz is no longer producing the 601 HDS kit... they will make parts but not kits. According to him the kit has not been available for 15 yrs. It was still advertised on line 6 months ago for $18,750 or so, and I went with a friend to their gathering in 2013 and it was available. I called yesterday, July 2nd, after seeing their Saturday lunch show on line. It's really too bad... Just FYI... So thanks for the videos, keep 'em coming.
